Women's decision-making and contraceptive use in Pakistan: an analysis of Demographic and Health Survey data.

This study examines the association of decision-making with contraceptive use along with other measures of women's empowerment and the gender context. We use data on currently married women from the Demographic and Health Survey conducted in Pakistan in 2017-2018. We contrast patterns in modern contraception with traditional contraception and examine specific modern methods. Husband's characteristics do not factor strongly in women's modern contraceptive use. Contraceptive decision-making is more pertinent to women's modern contraceptive use than household decision-making and is inhibited when…

Empowering lesbian and gay communities: a call for collaboration with community psychology.

This article traces the history of empowerment efforts in lesbian and gay communities. Despite considerable progress, lesbians and gay men remain marginalized in American society. Their personal, family, and community development is hampered by social and institutional barriers to empowerment. Three powerful disempowering problems of contemporary lesbian and gay communities are detailed: (1) stresses related to coming out; (2) heterosexism; and, (3) difficulties identifying with a community. Four domains are suggested for future collaboration between community psychologists and lesbian/gay com…

Efficacy of multidomain interventions to improve physical frailty, depression and cognition: data from cluster-randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is the pre-eminent exigency of aging. Although frailty-related impairments are preventable, and multidomain interventions appear more effective than unimodal ones, the optimal components remain uncertain. METHODS: We devised multidomain interventions against physical and cognitive decline among prefrail/frail community-dwelling ≥65-year-olds and evaluated these in complementary cluster-randomized trials of efficacy and participant empowerment. The Efficacy Study compared ~3-monthly telephone consultations vs. 16, 2 h sessions/year comprising communally partaken physical an…

The impact of in hospital patient-education intervention on older people's attitudes and intention to have their benzodiazepines deprescribed: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Long-term benzodiazepine use in the older population is common and is associated with significant harm. The provision of a patient-educational booklet during hospitalization may encourage patients to discuss review and possible deprescribing of benzodiazepine therapy with their health professionals. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and effect of a patient empowerment intervention in hospital inpatients on patient initiation of a discussion about deprescribing benzodiazepines versus usual care. METHODS: A feasibility interventional study using a patient-empowerme…

Beyond survival: empowering adults with congenital heart disease through communication and co-designed education.

Adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) live with lifelong clinical uncertainty, recurrent interventions, and complex decision-making demands. As survival improves, optimal ACHD care increasingly requires approaches that extend beyond biomedical management to support patient empowerment and engagement. This review examines contemporary strategies to support patient empowerment and engagement in ACHD, with a particular focus on communication-based interventions, nurse-led education, and co-designed tools that facilitate shared decision-making. We synthesise contemporary evidence alongside c…

Transition Care for Young Persons with Rare Bone Mineral Conditions: A Consensus Recommendation from the ECTS Rare Bone Disease Action Group.

Transition care (TC) is crucial for young persons with rare bone and mineral conditions (RBMCs) as they move from pediatric to adult healthcare. Effective TC prevents care disruptions and supports medical and psychosocial needs. However, gaps in communication, a shortage of adult RBMC specialists, and challenges in navigating adult healthcare necessitate standardized care. This study aimed to develop consensus-based recommendations for TC in RBMCs, focusing on best practices for seamless transition and patient empowerment. A two-round Delphi survey (September 2023-April 2024) was conducted amo…

Co-Creation Study Protocol for Developing a Nurse-Led Intervention to Deprescribe Benzodiazepines and Z-Hypnotics in Primary Care Aimed at Empowering Women.

BACKGROUND: Gender inequality in mental health is a persistent challenge that requires innovative solutions for its resolution. Interventions in primary care can be useful in narrowing the gap in the consumption of psychotropic drugs. OBJECTIVE: This study proposes female empowerment as a non-medical alternative for facing women's daily lives, which are often pathologised, and aims to develop a group intervention in primary care that promotes female empowerment and reduces the use of benzodiazepines and Z-hypnotics (BDZ/ZH). METHODS: Co-creation is presented as a novel methodology for develo…

The Effect of a Parent Advocacy Intervention on Service Access for Autistic Youth: The Moderating Role of Baseline Advocacy Ability.

Autistic youth face significant challenges accessing adult disability services as they transition out of school-based services. Frequency and comparison among antibiotic resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains in selected hospitals of Peshawar, Pakistan.

Previous research in neurodivergent children has shown a relation between parental risk factors and child internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Yet, a paucity of studies has examined the association between parental protective factors and child outcomes. This study investigated the association between parental empowerment and resilience and the degree of internalizing and externalizing behaviors in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Data were collected through the the In Kaart register between September 2022 and February 2024.…

Acceptance, Perceived Usefulness, and Data Sharing in Mobile Health Apps Among Patients With Breast Cancer: Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) apps promise to enhance patient empowerment, enable real-time health monitoring, and support self-management. Patients with breast cancer stand to benefit particularly from these capabilities, given the demanding pre- and posttreatment procedures they face. However, the effective adoption of these tools is challenged by issues including accessibility, usability limitations, and privacy concerns. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the current usage behavior and attitudes toward mHealth apps among patients with breast cancer in Germany, focusing on ac…
