OBJECTIVE: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is a common human genetic polymorphism. The deficiency protects against malaria but was shown to worsen the clinical course after severe trauma. Rhabdomyolysis resulting from septicemia (and endotoxemia) is not generally appreciated. In the present case, rhabdomyolysis and renal insufficiency followed documented E coli septicemia. Other causes of rhabdomyolysis were not identified in this patient. Thus, physicians should be alerted to this potentially serious complication of gram-negative septicemia.

In one case of fulminant hepatic failure by acute alcoholic hepatitis, renal failure seemed to be related to active renal vasoconstriction by systemic endotoxemia due to impaired hepatic clearance of toxins, associated with or complicated by a located intravascular coagulation with acute tubular necrosis. Intranuclear inclusions detected in hepatic, renal, and cerebral cells during endotoxemia can be subdivided into true and pseudo inclusions. True inclusions have filamentous and crystalline structure and are rarely found in control animals.
