Modeling the "F" in "SAFE": The dynamic game of facial cleanliness in trachoma prevention.

Trachoma, a neglected tropical disease (NTDs) caused by bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, is a leading cause of infectious blindness. Efforts are underway to eliminate trachoma as a public health problem by using the "SAFE" strategy. While mathematical models are now standard tools used to support elimination efforts and there are a variety of models studying different aspects of trachoma transmission dynamics, the "F" component of the strategy corresponding to facial cleanliness has received very little attention so far. In this paper, we incorporate human behavior into a standard epidemiologi

Estimating the basic reproduction number at the beginning of an outbreak.

We compare several popular methods of estimating the basic reproduction number, R0, focusing on the early stages of an epidemic, and assuming weekly reports of new infecteds. We study the situation when data is generated by one of three standard epidemiological compartmental models: SIR, SEIR, and SEAIR; and examine the sensitivity of the estimators to the model structure. As some methods are developed assuming specific epidemiological models, our work adds a study of their performance in both a well-specified (data generating model and method model are the same) and miss-specified (data gener…

Fine particle-induced birth defects: Impacts of size, payload, and beyond.

Worldwide epidemiological studies have shown that exposures to particulate matters (PMs), such as PM2.5 or PM10 , during pregnancy cause birth defects in the newborn. Although mechanistic understanding of such effects are not available, recent research using murine models highlights some key progress: (1) toxicity caused by PMs is a combined effects of particles and the adsorbed toxic pollutants, such as heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, bacteria, and virus. Fine particles may hold on to pollutants and, therefore, reduce their toxicity or enhance the toxicity by carrying pollutants

Oxidative theory of atherosclerosis and antioxidants.

Atherosclerosis is a multifactorial process that begins early in infancy and affects all the humans. Early steps of atherogenesis and the evolution towards complex atherosclerotic plaques are briefly described. After a brief history of the 'Lipid theory of atherosclerosis', we report the most prominent discoveries on lipoproteins, their receptors and metabolism, and their role in atherogenesis. The main focus is the 'oxidative theory of atherosclerosis', with emphasis on free radicals and reactive oxygen species, lipid peroxidation and LDL oxidation, biological properties of oxidized LDL and t

[Estimation of the incidence of human trypanosomiasis due to Trypanosoma brucei gambiense using epidemiological parameters essentially linked to the vector: case of a focus in the Ivory Coast].

The entomo-epidemiological studies carried out from 1980 to 1985 in the human trypanosomiasis focus at Bouaflé (Ivory Coast) were designed to estimate the main epidemiological parameters related to G. palpalis palpalis, the sleeping sickness vector in the zone considered. This paper defines the mathematical relationships which can exist between these parameters leading to the production of a simple model enabling estimates to be made of the incidence of human trypanosomiasis caused by T.b. gambiense in this focus. The model predicted a mean annual incidence of 1.50% in the Bouaflé focus. In th

Planning for smallpox outbreaks.

Mathematical models of viral transmission and control are important tools for assessing the threat posed by deliberate release of the smallpox virus and the best means of containing an outbreak. Models must balance biological realism against limitations of knowledge, and uncertainties need to be accurately communicated to policy-makers. Smallpox poses the particular challenge that key biological, social and spatial factors affecting disease spread in contemporary populations must be elucidated largely from historical studies undertaken before disease eradication in 1979. We review the use of m

The potential impact of new diagnostic tests on tuberculosis epidemics.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: New diagnostic tests for tuberculosis, especially those based on nucleic acid amplification, offer the possibility … sts with higher sensitivity and specificity early in the infectious period. Refined behavioural and epidemiological models should be able to investigate the mechanisms by which early diagnosis could be achieved, in addition to the consequent epidemiological effects.

Integrated treatment of panic disorder.

Epidemiological studies suggest that about 3.5% of the adult United States population meet criteria for panic disorder, and that an additional 2-5% suffer from agoraphobia with or without panic. Both biological and behavioral models have been proposed to elucidate the nature of this disorder. The authors review research findings regarding these models, as well as pharmacological and cognitive-behavioral treatment approaches. The complexity of factors contributing to the disorder suggests the need for an integrated treatment approach involving considerations of combination drug therapy and psyc

Spatio-temporal spread of COVID-19 over three variant waves in the continental United States.

Understanding the spatio-temporal spread of infectious diseases is important to improve control, yet most studies lack granular epidemiological data and are complicated by heterogeneities in pre-existing immunity. The COVID-19 pandemic provides a unique opportunity to study the invasion of a novel pathogen in a naive population. Here we apply correlation statistics and mathematical modelling to daily city-level COVID-19 case data between 2020 and 2022 to dissect the spatial diffusion of different virus variants across the United States. We find that between-city correlation in case incidences

Assessing the influence of HIV on the spread of Mpox disease.

Mpox, originating primarily in African rodents, has led to human outbreaks over recent years. This study presents a mathematical model for Mpox, distinguishing between individuals with and without HIV who are susceptible. We explore scenarios involving both rodent-to-human transmission and those without it. In the absence of this transmission route, the model undergoes a backward bifurcation, suggesting that reducing the basic reproduction number below one would not eliminate the disease unless further control strategies are used. With the account of rodent-to-human transmission, if Mpox is en

Investigating seasonal disease emergence and extinction in stochastic epidemic models.

Seasonal disease outbreaks are common in many infectious diseases such as seasonal influenza, Zika, dengue fever, Lyme disease, malaria, and cholera. Seasonal outbreaks are often due to weather patterns affecting pathogens or disease-carrying vectors or by social behavior. We investigate disease emergence and extinction in seasonal stochastic epidemic models. Specifically, we study disease emergence through seasonally varying parameters for transmission, recovery, and vector births and deaths in time-nonhomogeneous Markov chains for SIR, SEIR, and vector-host systems. A branching process appro

Mathematical models and lymphatic filariasis control: endpoints and optimal interventions.

The current global initiative to eliminate lymphatic filariasis is a major renewed commitment to reduce or eliminate the burden of one of the major helminth infections from resource-poor communities of the world. Mathematical models of filariasis transmission can serve as an effective tool for guiding the scientific development and management of successful community-level intervention programmes by acting as analytical frameworks for integrating knowledge regarding parasite transmission dynamics with programmatic factors. However, the power of these tools for supporting control interventions w

Time From Infection to Disease and Infectiousness for Ebola Virus Disease, a Systematic Review.

We systematically reviewed the literature to estimate the incubation and latent periods of Ebola virus disease. We found limited epidemiological data from individuals with discrete 1-day exposures. Available data suggest that the incubation and latent periods may differ, and mathematical models may be improved by distinguishing between the two periods.

Air pollution exposure prediction approaches used in air pollution epidemiology studies.

Epidemiological studies of the health effects of outdoor air pollution have traditionally relied upon surrogates of personal exposures, most commonly ambient concentration measurements from central-site monitors. However, this approach may introduce exposure prediction errors and misclassification of exposures for pollutants that are spatially heterogeneous, such as those associated with traffic emissions (e.g., carbon monoxide, elemental carbon, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter). We review alternative air quality and human exposure metrics applied in recent air pollution health effect

A Cost-Sensitive Behavioral Modeling Analysis of the Early Identification and Control of Infectious Diseases.

A coupled epidemic-behavior model is proposed to assess how vaccination, testing, and treatment jointly influence early outbreak control, accounting for individual choices based on perceived risk, intervention costs, and policy incentives. In a uniformly mixing population, individuals make strategic decisions regarding vaccination and testing participation based on the trade-offs between personal costs and communal benefits, while the intensity of public health testing adjusts according to infection prevalence; the transmission model includes vaccine efficacy, the probability of false negative

Dynamical Behavior and Control Optimization of a Zoonotic Epidemic Model Incorporating Temperature Effects: Analysis and Simulations.

The transmission of numerous zoonotic diseases hinges on the tripartite interactions among humans, animals and the environment. The One Health paradigm underscores the inextricable interconnection between human health, animal health and ecosystem health. This study innovatively develops a multi-host zoonotic disease transmission model incorporating both pathogen compartment and temperature effects. Through rigorous mathematical analysis, we prove the non-negativity and boundedness of solutions and systematically investigate the existence conditions and global asymptotic stability characteristi

Modeling and Analysis of SIRR Model (Ebola Transmission Dynamics Model) with Delay Differential Equation.

BACKGROUND: Ebola virus disease (EVD) is a severe and often fatal illness with high transmission potential and recurring outbreaks. Traditional compartmental models often neglect biologically important delays, such as the latent period before an infected individual becomes infectious, limiting their ability to capture real-world epidemic patterns. Including such delays can provide a more accurate understanding of outbreak persistence and control strategies. METHODS: In this study, we develop and analyze a novel deterministic SIRR model that captures the complex transmission dynamics of Ebola
