Epiphyseal impaction as a cause of severe osteoarticular pain of lower limbs after renal transplantation.

A syndrome of severe osteoarticular pain of lower limbs occurring early after renal transplantation (TP) has been recently identified. We describe its prevalence, clinical presentation and outcome. Symptomatic patients have been studied with conventional X-rays, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and 99mTechnetium scintigrams of the painful areas. Among 86 patients transplanted over a two-year period, nine (4 men, 5 women; mean age of 40.4 years; range 32 to 59) developed unexplained severe spontaneous osteoarticular pain of lower limbs 19 to 105 (mean 58) days after TP. Pain affected hip(s), kn

Morphological changes of epiphyseal plate in the long bone of chondrodysplastic dwarfism in Japanese brown cattle.

A total of 20 cases of disproportionate calves on Japanese Brown cattle were examined morphologically. Investigation of 5 affected calves revealed that the insufficiency of endochondral ossification was confined only to the long bones of the limbs and was not accompanied by other associated changes. On the basis of the histological changes of epiphyseal plate and the affected site, this condition may be called chondrodysplasia of the rhizomelic type. Therefore, this disorder was defined as a bovine dwarfism. From three dimensional image analysis and histological changes of the tibial proximal

[Osteosynthesis using a L-shaped miniplate of metaphyseal and metaphyseal-epiphyseal fractures of metacarpals and phalanges].

In 15 cases, a small L-shaped, cut-to-size, reversible plate was used either to stabilize metaphyseal and metaphyseal-epiphyseal fractures of metacarpal bones and first phalanxes or to correct malunions and non-unions. The material and operating technique are described and the advantages and disadvantages of this and other techniques are discussed.

Multiple epiphyseal dysplasia complicated by severe osteochondritis dissecans of the knee. Incidence in two families.

Two families are described which appear to contain examples of multiple epiphyseal dysplasia. In both families a striking incidence of severe osteochondritis of the knees was encountered. It is suggested that this was caused by the fragmented and maldeveloped epiphyses characteristic of epiphyseal dysplasia.

[Disorders of vascularization in para-epiphyseal groove humeral fractures and their clinical significance for the growing skeleton].

We analysed retrospectively 50 humerus fractures in the vicinity of elbow joint and 40 fractures of the proximal humerus with respect to possible injuries of the vessel pattern of the epiphyseal plate. The normal vessel pattern of the epiphyseal plate was examined postmortem on 8 foetus and newborns up to 6 months. We plastinated the affected regions and could compare symmetry of the vessel pattern in the epiphyseal plates as well as therapeutic consequences, especially after injuries of the elbow joint. Vascular disturbances in the case of young children, i.e. by fractures of the lateral oder

The histological and ultrastructural features of the epiphyseal plate in Morquio type A syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis type IVA).

Tissue from the epiphyseal plate of a patient with Morquio type A syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis type IVA) was studied by undecalcified histological and electron microscopical techniques. Cartilage cells in the plate were vacuolated to a variable degree. The orderly proliferating structure of the epiphyseal plate was absent and calcification was markedly reduced. The related bone tissue was morphologically normal although reduced in quantity.

[A syndrome of congenital diabetes with disordered epiphyseal growth with autosomal recessive inheritance (author's transl)].

A child is described with insulin dependent diabetes of neonatal onset and a disorder of endochondral growth. Radiological and histological bone appearances differ from those observed in other types of chondrodysplasia. The association of diabetes and chondrodysplasia is not likely to occur by chance but is probably a genuine clinical entity. The condition is probably inherited as a autosomal recessive and its possible pathogenesis is discussed.

Biallelic variants in SLC26A2 cause multiple epiphyseal dysplasia-4 by disturbing chondrocyte homeostasis.

BACKGROUND: Multiple epiphyseal dysplasia-4 (MED-4, MIM 226900) is a rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by disproportionate height and early onset osteoarthritis of the lower limbs. MED-4 is caused by homozygous or compound heterozygous pathogenic variants in the SLC26A2 gene. However, the underlying pathogenic mechanisms in chondrocytes remains unknown. This study aimed to identify the pathogenic variants within a MED-4 family and explore the molecular etiology of this condition in human primary chondrocyte cells. METHODS: Clinical data were recorded and peripheral blood samples

Age Estimation in Sportspersons From the Epiphyseal Fusion Around Wrist, Elbow, and Pelvic Joints.

Background Age estimation of an individual is an integral part of medicolegal work. Out of many scenarios for which age estimation is performed, competitive sports is the one emerging field where experts are consulted for providing accurate age of the athlete. Owing to the chances of deliberately increasing (padding) or decreasing (shaving) the age of the athlete for his own advantage, accurate age estimation is crucial. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) mandates age verification from experts prior to participation in sports events in various age group categories. One of the widely used meth

Autosomal recessive otospondylo-mega-epiphyseal dysplasia: comprehensive clinical review of a pediatric cohort.

Autosomal recessive otospondylo-mega-epiphyseal dysplasia (OSMEDB) is characterized by short stature with short limbs, dysmorphic facial features, and hearing loss, which is caused by biallelic, loss-of-function, variants in the COL11A2 gene. Geno-phenotypic data from the medical records of eight affected individuals from five unrelated families was abstracted, recorded in an Excel spreadsheet and analyzed using simple frequency analysis. Either short femora or short extremities with or without other ultrasonographic abnormalities were demonstrated in five patients antenatally. The mean height

Chronic Iodine Intake Excess Damages the Structure of Articular Cartilage and Epiphyseal Growth Plate.

This study aimed to explore the influence of excess iodine on the articular cartilage and epiphyseal growth plate in rats. Wistar rats (n = 200) were randomly divided into five groups with 40 rats in each: normal iodine (NI), 5-fold high iodine group (5HI), 10-fold high iodine group (10HI), 50-fold high iodine group (50HI), and 100-fold high iodine group (100HI). The rats were executed in 6 and 12 months. 24-h urinary iodine concentration (UIC) was monitored by arsenic-cerium catalytic spectrophotometry. The chemiluminescence method was used to determine the thyroid function. The pathological

Exome sequencing revealed USP9X and COL2A1 mutations in a large family with multiple epiphyseal dysplasia.

Diagnosis of rare skeletal diseases is based primarily on clinical phenotype and radiographic analysis. Genetic etiology of these heterogeneous diseases remains largely unknown. Here, we report the identification of two genomic mutations using exome sequencing from patients with multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED) of an unusual family in autosomal dominant and X-linked inheritance. A dominant mutation (c.2224G > A; p.Gly687Ser) in the known causal COL2A1 gene was identified in three patients with MED, deformed femoral heads and vertebral dysplasia. Furthermore, a hemizygous mutation (c.2830G >

Health-related Quality of Life in Adult Patients with Multiple Epiphyseal Dysplasia and Spondyloepiphyseal Dysplasia.

OBJECTIVES: Multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED) and spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia (SED) are skeletal dysplasias associated with premature osteoarthritis and short stature. Patients with SED often have spinal and ocular problems. Few reports have focused on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with skeletal dysplasias associated with premature osteoarthritis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the HRQoL of adult patients with MED and SED. METHODS: Questionnaires covering demographics, medical history (cataract, retinal detachment, and osteoarthritis), surgical history (
