BACKGROUND: Forty-six patients (38 females and 8 males) with infected knee arthroplasties were included in this study. In 31 patients (group A) an antibiotic-impregnated articulating spacer was used, whereas in 15 patients (group B) a combination of spacer and antibiotic carrier was used.

Thrombocytopenia is one of the rare hematologic complication of brucellosis. Herein a case of brucellosis with severe thrombocytopenia was reported. The patient was admitted to hematology service with epistaxis, ecchymoses, fever, thrombocytopenia (0.6 x 103/μL) and anemia. His initial diagnosis was idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Forty-seven selected patients presenting with acute abdominal symptoms were investigated by examination of the fluid obtained by peritoneal lavage. In 34 patients this confirmed the clinical diagnosis, in 11 it was a more positive help in that it corrected an erroneous clinical diagnosis and in 2 the results of the investigation were misleading.

The reparative effects of Derinat were studied in 15 patients with traumatic shock whose state was complicated by the development of sepsis. The immunomodulating effect of the drug lies in increasing the number of lymphocytes, reducing the total number of granulocytes and in elevation of the number of functionally valuable cells in them. Using Derinat was shown to facilitate the restoration of the initially reduced number of blood erythrocytes. The maximum effect of the drug was observed within 3-4 days. Readministrations of Derinat should be made twice a week.

Temperature dependent fluctuations in the erythrocyte sedimentation rate were noted during the assessment of one patient with symptomatic cryoglobulinaemia. Two patients with this condition were found to have erroneously high leucocyte counts when estimated by the Model S Coulter Counter. The artefact was directly related to the degree of exposure to cold before the estimation was performed and appeared to be due to the formation of microaggregates of cryoglobulin and fibrinogen.
