Navigating Acute and Late-Onset Toxicities After Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cell Therapy: A Patient-Centered Nursing Approach.

BACKGROUND: Patients with cancer undergoing advanced therapies, such as chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, experience complex treatment-related toxicities that require timely recognition and management. Nurses educate, monitor, and intervene to optimize outcomes and support quality survivorship care for patients. OBJECTIVES: This article highlights evidence-based interventions for managing treatment-related complications and outlines strategies to support safe, high-quality care throughout CAR T-cell treatment. METHODS: The author conducted a literature review using PubMed®, CIN

Improving peripheral IV cannula care: implementing high-impact interventions.

Infection prevention and control measures have been recognized as effective in minimizing the risk of infection from peripheral intravenous (IV) cannulas. However, this relies on health professionals' compliance with guidelines for the care of patients with IV catheters and at times it may be that practice is inconsistent with guidelines. This article discusses the care required for peripheral cannulas and shows how implementing the high-impact interventions can improve peripheral IV catheter care on insertion and its management afterwards.

Development of an evidence-based protocol for reduction of indwelling urinary catheter usage.

Studies indicate 40% of indwelling urinary catheters are unnecessary in hospitalized patients (Gardam, Amihod, Orenstein, Consolacion, & Miller, 1998; Gokula, Hickner, & Smith, 2004). The results of a protocol developed to limit catheter use are described.

Using a psychosocial registry as a data source for nurses.

Nurses at the bedside strive to base their practice on the best available information derived from evidence. However, issues related to patient care often arise for which evidence is either difficult to attain or not available. This can be particularly true for nurses who care for patients with diverse diagnoses because most studies focus on patients with a single cancer diagnosis. For example, evidence about quality of life (QOL) as perceived by the patient is a concern for clinicians but is of particular importance to nurses at the bedside. A great deal of study has been performed on the QOL

Achieving balance between implementing effective infection prevention and control practices and maintaining a home-like setting in U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs nursing homes.

Nursing homes present a unique challenge for implementing infection prevention and control practices while striving to maintain a home-like environment. Medical devices such as urinary catheters and central venous catheters have become a part of nursing home care but can predispose residents to associated infections. Because evidence-based prevention bundles were implemented, catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) and central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) were monitored in all U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) nursing homes, and outcomes were evaluated.

Case study: Obesity, genital oedema and lower limb compression bandaging.

The purpose of this article is to present an evidence-based rationale for lymphoedema compression bandaging, one aspect of treatment for a patient with complex lower limb lymphoedema. The current health care climate requires treatment decisions to be transparent, based on the best available evidence. The challenge faced by community nurses is to formulate treatment plans which incorporate patients' preferences and best use limited resources provided by clinical environments. The article appraises research in order to formulate a suitable treatment plan and provides discussion and reflection re

Education and training requirements for health care professionals caring for patients with a peripheral intravenous catheter: a best practice implementation project.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) are the most commonly used invasive health care devices; however, 35%-50% of PIVCs fail due to complications such as phlebitis, infiltration, occlusion, and infection. Health care professionals (HCPs) play a critical role in minimizing these risks through adherence to evidence-based practices (EBPs). OBJECTIVE: The objective of this project was to promote EBPs regarding education and training for HCPs caring for a patient with a PIVC in a trauma/trauma surgery unit in Mississippi, USA. METHODS: The project was guided by the JBI Evidence

DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF A NURSE-LED SELF-DIRECTED PEDIATRIC REHABILITATION MODEL: COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF INTERNATIONAL PRACTICES.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric rehabilitation has become a global health priority due to increasing survival among children with neurodevelopmental disorders and medical complexity. Although nurse-led rehabilitation models are increasingly recognized as effective approaches for improving continuity of care and rehabilitation outcomes, considerable international variation persists in nursing roles, organizational structures, and integration of digital health strategies, particularly in transitional health systems. AIM: To systematically map and compare international nurse-led pediatric rehabilitation m

Myringotomy and insertion of grommets as day surgery: a case study.

This evidence-based case study follows a child from a nursing assessment on the day of his elective surgery at a children's hospital for myringotomy and insertion of grommets under general anaesthesia through to his arrival at the operating room. Potential pre-operative problems are identified and two problems that arose are discussed in detail. The main care provider in this case was a student nurse referred to as 'the nurse', supported by a qualified nurse, referred to as the 'registered nurse', who performed some assessments.

Missed nursing care in community-based health care: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Missed nursing care is widely recognized as a complex phenomenon associated with care quality and patient safety. Although extensively studied in hospital settings, evidence on its determinants and consequences in community and home care remains limited. AIM: This scoping review synthesizes the available literature on missed nursing care in community-based care settings, identifying causes, consequences, and measurement tools. METHODS: The study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews checklist and Joanna Brigg

Dog-Assisted Interventions for People with Dementia: A Mixed Methods Systematic Review.

Dementia is a growing public health challenge, approximately 130,000 to 150,000 people were living with the condition in Sweden in 2023. Dementia is generally associated with psychological symptoms such as depression, anxiety, apathy, and reduced quality of life. Treatment generally consists of a combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological nursing interventions. Mental health nurses play a central role in promoting person-centred care and applying evidence-based nursing practices, where dog-assisted interventions may represent a potential component of care. The aim of the study was …
