Automated classification of otitis media with OCT: augmenting pediatric image datasets with gold-standard animal model data.

Otitis media (OM) is an extremely common disease that affects children worldwide. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has emerged as a noninvasive diagnostic tool for OM, which can detect the presence and quantify the properties of middle ear fluid and biofilms. Here, the use of OCT data from the chinchilla, the gold-standard OM model for the human disease, is used to supplement a human image database to produce diagnostically relevant conclusions in a machine learning model. Statistical analysis shows the datatypes are compatible, with a blended-species model reaching ∼95% accuracy and F1 scor

Identification of Prognostic Clinical Features in Grade 4 Immune-Related Adverse Events: A Triangulation Study.

BACKGROUND: Grade 4 immune-related adverse events (irAEs) is life-threatening complications of immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy. Due to its rarity and scarcity of data, there is a lack of systematic research on key factors influencing poor prognosis. This exploratory study aimed to identify clinical features robustly associated with mortality in patients with grade 4 irAEs. Given the extremely small sample size and high‑dimensional data, a triangulation approach integrating traditional univariate statistics and machine learning to maximize the reliability of feature selection. METHODS: Thi

Integrated Cross-Platform Analysis Reveals Candidate Variants and Linkage Disequilibrium-Defined Loci Associated with Osteoporosis in Korean Postmenopausal Women.

Background: Osteoporosis is highly prevalent in postmenopausal women, yet genome-wide association studies often miss disease-relevant variants because of incomplete single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) coverage and platform-specific limitations. We aimed to identify genetic contributors to osteoporosis risk by integrating two exome-based genotyping platforms with multilayer analytic approaches. Methods: We analyzed extreme osteoporosis phenotypes in Korean postmenopausal women from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) Ansan-Anseong cohorts using the Illumina Infinium HumanExome Bea

Prognostic model for log odds of negative lymph node in locally advanced rectal cancer via interpretable machine learning.

No studies have examined the prognostic value of the log odds of negative lymph nodes/T stage (LONT) in locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT). We aimed to assess the prognostic value of LONT and develop a machine learning model to predict overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in LARC patients treated with nCRT. The study included 820 LARC patients who received nCRT between September 2010 and October 2017. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses identified prognostic factors, which were then used to develop risk asses

Using Machine Learning and Electronic Health Records to Identify Neuropsychiatric Risk Scores for Delirium in ICU and General Hospital Settings.

OBJECTIVE: Delirium is a common and acute neuropsychiatric syndrome that requires timely intervention to prevent its associated morbidity and mortality. Yet, its diagnosis and symptoms are often overlooked due to its variable clinical presentation and fluctuating nature. Thus, in this study, we address the barriers to delirium diagnosis by utilizing a machine learning-based predictive algorithm for incident delirium that relies on archived electronic health records (EHRs) data. METHODS: We used the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC) database to create a detailed dataset for i

Machine learning for the prediction of minor amputation in University of Texas grade 3 diabetic foot ulcers.

Minor amputations are performed in a large proportion of patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) and early identification of the outcome of minor amputations facilitates medical decision-making and ultimately reduces major amputations and deaths. However, there are currently no clinical predictive tools for minor amputations in patients with DFU. We aim to establish a predictive model based on machine learning to quickly identify patients requiring minor amputation among newly admitted patients with DFU. Overall, 362 cases with University of Texas grade (UT) 3 DFU were screened from tertiary

Development of a machine learning-based early prediction model for disease severity in acute pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) represents the most severe form of acute pancreatitis (AP) and is associated with considerable morbidity, mortality, and socioeconomic burden. Early identification of critically ill patients is crucial for disease management in AP. However, commonly used scoring systems are often complex, time-consuming, and lack interpretability. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop a machine learning-based model for early prediction of severity in AP and to perform interpretability analysis. METHODS: A total of 528 AP patients meeting the inclusion c

Electromyographic features for quantitative assessment of lower limb spasticity after stroke: a feasibility study.

Assessment of lower limb spasticity is crucial for enhancing both functional recovery and rehabilitation effectiveness of stroke patients. Traditional methods like the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) are often hampered by subjective bias, leading to inconsistent assessments among clinicians. In contrast, neurophysiological methods, mainly surface Electromyography (sEMG) data analysis, offer a more objective and sensitive alternative. Most of the existing studies based on sEMG focus more on upper limb applications, while research on the assessment of lower limb spasms is still under exploration.

Application of machine learning to the identification of joint degrees of freedom involved in abnormal movement during upper limb prosthesis use.

To evaluate movement quality of upper limb (UL) prosthesis users, performance-based outcome measures have been developed that examine the normalcy of movement as compared to a person with a sound, intact hand. However, the broad definition of "normal movement" and the subjective nature of scoring can make it difficult to know which areas of the body to evaluate, and the expected magnitude of deviation from normative movement. To provide a more robust approach to characterizing movement differences, the goals of this work are to identify degrees of freedom (DOFs) that will inform abnormal movem

Surface-based cortical thickness and gyrification mapping with data-driven prediction of cognitive impairment in prediabetes.

BACKGROUND: Prediabetes is a serious health condition characterized by blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. It remains unclear whether alterations in cortical morphology occur during the prediabetic stage. This study aimed to investigate changes in cortical thickness and gyrification in individuals with prediabetes, and to explore whether these changes can predict cognitive performance using a machine learning approach. METHODS: T1-weighted MRI scans were acquired from 48 patients with prediabetes and 42 healthy controls. Sur
