An experimental study of nematode endophthalmitis due to T canis and review of the literature has been presented. Six owl monkeys were infected either by nasogastric tube using embryonated T canis eggs or by carotid or intravitreal injection of second stage larvae. The clinical manifestations, especially ocular, were observed and various diagnostic tests performed. Only minimal or no intraocular changes were seen after systemic infection but significant abnormalities such as retinal hemorrhages and venous dilation were noted after intravitreal infection. Motile larvae were observed in the lens

INTRODUCTION: Human infections caused by Aspergillus brasiliensis have not yet been reported. We describe the first two known cases of fungal keratitis caused by Aspergillus brasiliensis.
CASE PRESENTATIONS: A 49-year-old Indian Tamil woman agricultural worker came with pain and defective vision in the right eye for one month. Meanwhile, a 35-year-old Indian Tamil woman presented with a history of a corneal ulcer involving the left eye for 15 days. The fungal strains isolated from these two cases were originally suspected to belong to Aspergillus section Nigri based on macro- and micromorphol

We report the case of a 32-year-old pregnant woman with an unidentified intraocular parasite. The parasite, which had been acquired in Thailand, caused cutaneous larva migrans, sacroileitis, and 2 years later optic neuritis and panuveitis. The patient was successfully treated with ivermectin and albendazole. The diagnostic possibilities of this peculiar presentation are discussed. Parasitic infections are a leading cause of medical problems in travelers to tropical countries.1 While most parasites cause gastrointestinal problems, some may migrate throughout the body and lodge in critical organ

BACKGROUND: Infectious keratitis (IK) is a leading cause of corneal blindness, typically caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses, or parasites. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial, yet the absence of a gold standard for pathogen identification complicates timely interventions. Corneal cultures can be time-consuming and prone to false positives, highlighting the need for an automated classification system.
METHODS: From March 2018 to November 2023, 1,065 diffuse pattern slit-lamp images were collected to develop a deep learning system. Five models-EfficientNet_B0, EfficientNet_V2_S, ResNet50

Parasites that occupy the eyes of fish have the potential to affect visual perception and consequently alter the host's behaviour, as these organs provide information about their surroundings. In an experimental study, the feeding behaviour of European perch (Perca fluviatilis) infested with the eye fluke Tylodelphys clavata was examined. The results showed that an individual's ability to identify and approach food items was negatively affected by the infestation intensity of T. clavata. Additionally, the foraging success of an individual was reduced in competition with another, less heavily i

Patients with HIV infection and, above all, patients with full-blown AIDS can get a variety of ocular diseases as well as some cerebral maladies which have an influence on ocular functions. First there are hematogenous opportunistic infections of the retina or the choroid. The cytomegalovirus [CMV] retinitis was found in nearly 20% of all AIDS patients. Without treatment this disease destroys the retina completely, and the involved eye becomes blind. This can be prevented by modern therapeutic strategies in most of the cases. Other infections affecting the retina are toxoplasmosis, systemic va

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the distribution of ocular bacterial pathogens and their antibiotic resistance status at a tertiary-care hospital and … nt years over the course of a decade, Gram-positive cocci always turned out to be the main cause of eye infections. Of the Gram-positive cocci, 73.47% (277/377) were isolated from patients with endophthalmitis, with the most important species being Staphylococcus epidermidis, which was followed by Streptococcus viridans. The rest, or 26.53% (100/377), of the Gra …

Evaluation of the patient with an acute eye problem begins with documentation of the level of vision in each eye, except in the case of a splash injury. In such cases, immediate copious irrigation is of critical importance. Subconjunctival hemorrhage is common and, typically, completely benign. Herpes simplex infection is painful and can lead to extensive damage. Herpes zoster infection is usually accompanied by skin lesions and can be effectively treated with oral acyclovir or famcyclovir. In patients with Bell's palsy, the eye must be carefully protected to prevent secondary injury. Corneal

PURPOSE: Corneal epithelial wound healing (CEWH) is a complex process influenced by epigenetic regulation. Ubiquitin-like with plant homeodomain (PHD) and ring finger domains 1 (UHRF1), it plays a key role in integrating epigenetic signals. However, its precise function in modulating CEWH remains poorly understood. We describe here the functional mechanisms of UHRF1 in modulating CEWH.
METHODS: Quantitative Reverse Transcription PCR (RT-qPCR), immunofluorescence, and gene manipulation were used to investigate UHRF1 expression patterns and functions during CEWH. Integrated multi-omics and targ

Corneal involvement in HIV-infected individuals may be broadly classified into two categories, namely, infectious and noninfectious with the vast majority of manifestations occurring in the former. In this article, we shall focus on these two categories and strive to highlight those presentations that should alert the clinician to suspect underlying HIV infection. Infectious group mainly consists of Herpitic group of viral infections. Bacterial causes may be due to Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeroginosa, alpha hemolytic Streptococcus, Micrococcus and Bacillus

Infectious keratitis is a serious cause of vision loss. Proper treatment of infectious keratitis requires antimicrobials that target the organism responsible for a patient's ulcer. The frequency of infection by a given organism varies by location. We examined the literature to determine geographic disparities in the etiology of bacterial and fungal keratitis in the United States of America. Bacterial keratitis makes up a greater proportion of cases in northern locations, and fungal keratitis increases in prevalence in southern locations. Gram-negative organisms make up a greater proportion of

PURPOSE: Infective keratitis is a major sight-threatening condition in developing countries like India. An early diagnosis of infective keratitis is critical to its treatment. Epidemiological trends, morphological features of corneal ulceration and presence of other risk factors often dictate choice of initial treatment. This work assesses the usefulness of classification of infective keratitis by artificial neural network (ANN).
METHODS: Forty input variables from each of the sixty-three known bacterial or fungal ulcers provided the basis for training a three layer feed-forward neural networ

Bacterial infections are frequently associated with diseases of the eyelids, cornea, and conjunctiva. Animals sustaining KCS commonly have bacterial infections of the external eye owing to a lack of antimicrobial properties present in the normal tearfilm. Infection can occur in the nasolacrimal duct or lacrimal sac, which is referred to as dacryocystitis. Severe corneal ulcers are frequently infected with bacteria, especially Pseudomonas sp. Three new topical ophthalmic antibiotics have recently become commercially available: ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and ofloxacin.
