A six-year-old girl was referred to our child psychiatry outpatient clinic by the Pediatric Neurology Unit with a diagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and trichotillomania. She had neither eyebrows nor eyelashes. The clinical picture was of irritability, frequent tantrums, and aggressive behaviour. During the following year she presented several brief episodes of intense mood changes, which typically started with night-time onset trichotillomania and sleep disturbance. The episodes lasted no longer than five days and recurred within one or two months. A diagnosis of ped…

Lymphedema-distichiasis syndrome (LD, OMIM 153400) is an autosomal dominant disorder with variable expression. It is caused by mutations in the FOXC2-gene, which codes for a forkhead transcription factor involved in the development of the lymphatic and vascular system. LD is characterized by late childhood or pubertal onset lymphedema of the limbs and distichiasis (double row of eyelashes). While the latter is the most common expression of LD, venous insufficiency occurs in half of the patients. Other associations have been reported, including congenital heart disease, ptosis, cleft lip/palate…

OBJECTIVE: A retrospective survey of ocular defects in Australian Shepherd dogs was conducted following concerns raised by breeders and owners in Australia. This is the first known such study conducted for this breed.
RESULTS: Data from this survey indicate that persistent hyaloid remnants (PHR) were the most common eye defect noted in the Australian Shepherd. Collie eye anomaly (CEA) is the second most common defect noted by veterinary ophthalmologists in the breed in Australia, and extra eyelashes (ectopic cilia/distichia) the third most common.
CONCLUSIONS: The data also support the hypot…

Trachoma with its typical deformation of the eyelashes (trichiasis) is a blinding affection, well-known since Antiquity. But while in the XIXth century the disease was universally endemic, today it is restricted to poverty-stricken areas in the world. This highly contagious affection was eliminated in the industrialised countries before the era of antibiotherapy and even before the identification of the germ. Which lesson to draw from this historical retrospect? Present fighting against this plague epitomized by the WHO-supported Alliance might mean more than the last episode of a vestigial di…

Congenital erosive and vesicular dermatosis healing with reticulated supple scarring is a rare entity presenting in the newborn with crusted erosions and vesicles that heal relatively rapidly, forming unique reticulated scars. A 9-year-old boy presented with a diagnosis of junctional epidermolysis bullosa, but displayed this characteristic scarring pattern and very mild ongoing blistering. In addition, he had severe chronic conjunctivitis due to cicatricial alopecia of the eyelashes and lacrimal duct obstruction. He had no evidence of enamel defects or other features of junctional epidermolysi…

We describe a 46-year-old woman with multiple symmetrical papulocystic lesions on the face, neck, chest, back, and upper arms since childhood. Vermiculate atrophoderma, entropion, and progressive loss of eyelashes was also noted. Since the age of 30, 12 basal cell carcinomas have developed on the face. Histopathologic examination revealed multiple anastomosing nests and strands that arose from the lower part of a hair follicle in early lesions. In more advanced lesions, multiple keratinizing microcysts within a moderately sclerotic stroma were noted in the upper and mid dermis. In some biopsy …

Fabrication of an orbital prosthesis is considered as a challenging procedure as compared to the other facial prosthesis due to the presence of inactive eye movements and the need of artificial hair in order to mimic eyelashes and eyebrows. Generally these structures are sewed or bonded in the silicone. However, deformation or hair loss is observed within time. This deformation is visible especially in the eyebrow. This clinical report represents a patient with an implant supported orbital prosthesis. Patient was not satisfied with the nature of her eyebrow that was sewed in the silicone. Ther…

Retained cilia in the eye following injury are rare. There are reports of long term tolerance to cilia in the anterior chamber but no information about the effect on the corneal endothelium. A 31-year-old man was seen with a 19-year history of a retained eyelash embedded in a corneal scar and extending across the anterior chamber to the chamber angle. The follicle was absent. There was no cellular inflammatory reaction, and the eye otherwise appeared normal on slit-lamp examination with normal vision. However, there was the appearance of an encrusted deposit on the surface of the lash and a ma

Treatment of phthiriasis palebrarum so far is unsatisfactory and prolonged. It was an accidental finding that led us to try various strengths of fluorescein on head lice. It was seen from our study that 20% fluorescein resulted in the lice' instantaneous death. This percentage was used in all our subsequent cases of phthiriasis with excellent results. A new method for the treatment of phthiriasis palpebrarum from the eyelash by a single application of 20% fluorescein is described. This method required no sedation or anesthetic and can be carried out as an outpatient department procedure. It is

Ocular sebaceous carcinoma is an uncommon, aggressive tumor arising from the Meibomian gland, Zeis gland, or sebaceous glands in the caruncle or eyelashes. We described a rare case of sebaceous carcinoma in situ in a 51-year-old female that was characterized by intraepithelial growth of sebaceous carcinoma cells with no invasive carcinoma in the underlying sebaceous glands. Early stromal invasion was identified that featured 2 distinctive but focally intermixed populations of sebaceous carcinoma cells and squamous carcinoma cells. The 2 populations of cells exhibited their respective distinct …

In this report, we elaborate the clinical findings and the optimal management of two cases with ocular glue injuries in two paediatric patients. Both the patients were presented to the ocular emergency with completely closed eyelid and periocular erythema. The eyelids were completely closed due to matting of the eyelashes with glue retention up to lash roots. Thus, in both cases, after the application of local anaesthetic agent, immediate lash trimming was performed along with the removal of crystallised glue particles. However, the ocular surface showed only congestion in absence of any added…

Pediatric alopecia areata is a spectrum of autoimmune non-scarring alopecia in which some patients lose small patches of hair from their scalp but others lose more or all of the hair from the scalp and body, including eyebrows and eyelashes. Few studies have looked at therapies for this disorder in children, so much of the data are derived from adult literature and describe off-label use of medication. Generally, topical therapies consisting of topical steroids and topical irritating compounds/contact sensitizers are used. Systemic therapies that block the immune system, including Janus kinase…

Nager syndrome, also called preaxial acrofacial dysostosis, comprises two groups of defects involving the limbs and craniofacial region, respectively. This syndrome is rare and only 70 cases have been reported in the literature. The exact cause of this syndrome is unknown, but there is indication that it is genetically based. Ocular manifestations of this syndrome include widely separated downward slanting eyes, absence of eyelashes, ptosis of upper eyelids and colobomas on the inner aspect of lower eyelids. We report limbal dermoid in a patient with Nager syndrome. We did not find such an ass…

PURPOSE: To report an unusual case of Demodex folliculitis presenting as periocular vesiculopustular rash.
DESIGN: Case report.
RESULTS: A 68 year-old woman presented with a unilateral periocular rash that was initially treated by her primary ophthalmologist with topical steroids and antivirals. Slit-lamp examination revealed severe bilateral blepharitis, right greater than left, with waxy sleeves around the eyelashes. The diagnosis of Demodex infestation was considered. Treatment with daily lid scrub with polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB), 1,2-hexanediol and 1,2-octanediol (OCuSOFT PLUS) a…

This article reports on the ophthalmological features of four Turkish children with GAPO syndrome, a very rare autosomal recessive condition characterized by growth retardation (G), alopecia (A), pseudoanodontia (P) (failure of tooth eruption), and optic atrophy (O). The children were from two unrelated families born to consanguineous parents. They had the characteristic facial appearance of alopecia, rarefaction of eyebrows and eyelashes, frontal bossing, high forehead, midfacial hypoplasia, hypertelorism, and thickened eyelids and lips. Two children had severe end-stage glaucoma in both eyes…

Ablepharon-macrostomia syndrome (AMS) is a rare condition reported to date in 13 patients worldwide. AMS is characterized by absent or short eyelids, absent eyebrows and eyelashes, macrostomia, and external ear abnormalities. Additional features include alopecia or sparse hair, hypoplastic malar region, redundant skin, rudimentary nipples, abnormal genitalia. While the AMS phenotype is well delineated in infants and children, clinical manifestations are rather poorly characterized in adulthood. Here, we report on an Italian woman who received a diagnosis of AMS at the age of 46 years after sev…

We report a unique isolated hair and nail ectodermal dysplasia in a 3-year-old girl. Clinical examination revealed short, sparse scalp hair, absent eyebrows, short eyelashes and nail dystrophy in all digits. Nail changes included shortened nail plate with distal onycholysis and loss of the cuticle. Sweating and teeth were normal. Development was normal. Scanning electron microscopy of the hair only demonstrated trichorrhexis nodosa. There was no pili torti. Vertically sectioned scalp biopsy revealed hypoplastic hair follicles and a horizontally sectioned biopsy showed a decrease in the overall…

A 52-year-old woman with stage IIIC ovarian cancer and stage IA uterine cancer experienced recurring alopecia areata of her eyebrows, eyelashes, arms, legs, and pubic area beginning 5 months after completing chemotherapy with paclitaxel and carboplatin. The condition recurred in a cyclic fashion over the ensuing months. Alopecia is a well-recognized adverse event associated with chemotherapy; however, to our knowledge, this cyclic pattern of alopecia has not been reported in a patient with cancer. Our report of a cancer survivor who experienced cyclic alopecia areata indicates that this condit…
