Synovial sarcomas account for 7-10% of all soft tissue malignancies and the rare head and neck region location accounts for an average 5% of them. A brief review of the data in the Literature has shown that not more than one hundred cases of cervical-facial synovial sarcoma have been reported. In the head and neck locations this form of tumor is significantly less aggressive, with a higher survival rate and a recurrence rate much lower than the 60-70% shown for other locations in the limbs. After a brief review of the Literature, Authors present a rare clinical case of hypopharyngeal synovial

In 7 patients with peripheral facial nerve paralysis during the development of pontocerebellar angle tumor or caused by damage to the nerve during surgical removal of the tumour the blink reflex and the peripheral nerve conduction were studied. Additionally, in 5 of these cases clinical and electrophysiological follow-up was carried out after operations of anastomosing of the hypoglossal nerve to the facial nerve. In all these cases the blink reflex was absent after the operation. On the other hand, from the third month on after the anastomotic operation a return was observed of the conduction

INTRODUCTION: Facial nerve injury remains the most severe complication of parotid gland surgery. However, the use of intraoperative facial nerve monitoring (IFNM) during parotid gland surgery among Otolaryngologist-Head and Neck Surgeons continues to be a matter of debate.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature was conducted including articles from 1970 to 2019 to try to determine the effectiveness of intraoperative facial nerve monitoring in preventing immediate and permanent postoperative facial nerve weakness in patients undergoing primary parotidect

With the aid of axial CT scanning a polyurethane or resin copy of bony tissue of the craniofacial region of interest can be manufactured. 3-dimensional models are used in planning of osteotomies of the midface and forehead, where complex bone transpositions are to be performed, and in manufacturing complex implants. Different preoperative steps in several patients are demonstrated and the postoperative results are shown. Patient A was a 9-year-old girl who had radiotherapy as a baby for retinoblastoma which destroyed a large part of her face. In patient B, a 46-year-old woman, the whole zygoma

BACKGROUND: To determine if Extracapsular Dissection (ECD) versus Partial Superficial Parotidectomy (PSP) differ in terms of tumor recurrence and transient and permanent facial nerve dysfunction. ECD does not dissect the facial nerve. PSP dissects the facial nerve and provides a 1-2 cm margin around the tumor.
METHODS: A 38-year Ovid Medline search (1970-2008) and an historical review with statistical analysis of published manuscripts were performed.
RESULTS: Tumor recurrence occurred in 36/1183 (3.0%) ECD cases and 1/340 (0.3%) PSP cases; (p < 0.05). Permanent facial nerve dysfunction occur

BACKGROUND: Neoplasms can compress or infiltrate the facial nerve, leading to facial nerve paresis or palsy (FNP). As evidence regarding cancers outside the head, neck, and nervous system in persons initially diagnosed with FNP remains limited, we examined the overall and site-specific cancer rates among all patients diagnosed with FNP in Denmark over a 29-year study period.
METHODS: We conducted a hospital-based cohort study in Denmark, 1994-2022, identifying FNP from inpatient, outpatient, or emergency room visits. We computed absolute risks (AR), and age- and sex-standardized incidence rat

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mivacurium (Mivacron--GlaxoWellcome) during combined general anaesthesia in the operations on the facial cranium, after tracheal intubation performed using suxamethonium chloride (Chlorsuccillin--Polfa PL). We examined 20 patients, 17-65 years old, who were underwent operations due to facial and neck neoplasms or trauma. Patients were divided into two 10-person groups. In first group the dose of Mivacron for the induction of anaesthesia was 0.15 mg/kg of body weight, in second group the dose was 0.1 mg/kg of body weight. Next doses use

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the long-term efficacy of fluorouracil (FU) or chemical peels for the treatment of actinic keratoses (AK). Our earlier work examined the efficacy and safety of a medium-depth chemical peel compared with the standard regimen of topical FU in the treatment of widespread facial AK through 12 months.
OBJECTIVES: To determine long-term efficacy of both treatments by extending our observations through 32 months.
METHODS: Fifteen patients with severe facial actinic damage were treated on the left side with a single application of Jessner's solution and 35% tric

BACKGROUND: In this report, we present a unique case of intraneural squamous cell carcinoma of unknown primary found within the facial nerve and the proposed algorithms for diagnosis and management of progressive idiopathic facial paralysis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old female with a previous history of basal cell carcinoma presented with right-sided progressive facial paralysis. Repeated magnetic resonance imaging as well as targeted workup failed to reveal a diagnosis. 20 months following symptom onset, after the patient's facial function slowly progressed to a complete paralysis, repea

BACKGROUND: Jugulotympanic paraganglioma (JTP), also known as glomus jugulare tumor, is a neuroendocrine neoplasm. Although it represents <0.5% of head-and-neck tumors, it demonstrates significant local aggressiveness due to its tendency to infiltrate bone, vascular structures, and cranial nerves. Due to the hypervascular nature of these tumors, preoperative embolization has become an important surgical adjunct. The retrolabyrinthine approach provides adequate exposure of the jugular foramen while preserving the facial nerve without mandatory transposition.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a 52-y

Ceruminous adenocarcinoma (CAC) represents an exceedingly rare malignant glandular neoplasm originating from the ceruminous glands within the external auditory canal (EAC), constituting approximately 5%-10% of all EAC malignancies. Owing to its insidious onset and nonspecific symptoms, diagnosis is frequently delayed. This report delineates a case of right EAC CAC in a 39-year-old male, focusing on the diagnostic trajectory, multimodal therapy, and short-term outcomes. The patient presented with a one-month history of recurrent bloody purulent discharge from the right ear, intermittent otalgia

BACKGROUND: Osteoid osteoma is a benign osteoblastic neoplasm characterized by the production of osteoid and immature bone within a highly vascularized, osteogenic connective tissue stroma. This lesion predominantly occurs in individuals during their second and third decades of life, with a male-to-female predilection ratio of 2:1 to 3:1. This report presents an uncommon case of a giant osteoid osteoma involving the mandibular ramus managed via complete intraoral surgical excision.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old female of Persian ethnicity presented with a 12-month history of a slowly progr
