Verification of the family tree of the Makino family of the Nagaoka domain by DNA analysis.

During the Edo period in Japan, the Makino family served for generations as the feudal lords of the Nagaoka domain, which ruled the northern part of the Chuetsu region and the western part of the Kaetsu region in present-day Niigata Prefecture. Two different family histories have been handed down regarding Makino Tadahiro, the 8th lord of the Nagaoka domain. According to official records, Tadahiro was from the Kasama Makino family (relatives of the Nagaoka Makino family). However, an unofficial record of the Nagaoka Makino family states that Tadahiro was the biological son of the 5th lord of N…

Family Accommodation of Pediatric Irritability: Development and Psychometric Properties of the Family Accommodation Scale for Irritability.

Irritability in children and adolescents is an important mental health concern that presents across a range of disorders. Family accommodation refers to the way families alter their behavior to prevent or reduce child distress. Despite its clinical relevance, the role of family accommodation in pediatric irritability remains underexplored. This study developed and validated a novel parent- and child-report form of the Family Accommodation Scale for Irritability (FASI). We recruited 131 youths (61.83% male, 36.64% female, 1.53% unknown sex; 63.36% White, 12.21% multiracial, 9.92% Black or Afric…

A three-generation Muckle-Wells syndrome family: Detailed family history, physical examination, and inter-departmental collaboration.

Cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome (CAPS) is a rare inherited autoinflammatory disease caused by gain-of-function mutations in the NLRP3 gene, with a genotype-phenotype correlation. The clinical presentation of each mutation has been previously studied. However, very few studies have reported on the clinical characteristics and treatment effectiveness across different generations within a family with the same mutation. A detailed investigation of family members of patients with CAPS may help in the appropriate diagnosis and treatment of undiagnosed CAPS. Herein, we report a 2-year-old boy …

Linking family and intimate partner relationships to chronic pain: An application of the biobehavioral family model.

INTRODUCTION: Research is needed to determine mechanisms of effect linking family relationships and chronic pain for adults. Guided by the Biobehavioral Family Model (BBFM), the present study examined indirect effects between a negative family emotional climate and chronic pain disease activity, as mediated by biobehavioral reactivity. METHOD: Data for this study are from the Midlife Development in the United States; specifically, a subsample of participants who reported experiencing chronic pain (n = 1,461, ages 32-84). Participants self-reported family strain, biobehavioral reactivity (i.e.…

Incorporation of detailed family history from the Swedish Family Cancer Database into the PCPT risk calculator.

PURPOSE: A detailed family history provides an inexpensive alternative to genetic profiling for individual risk assessment. We updated the PCPT Risk Calculator to include detailed family histories. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 55,168 prostate cancer cases and 638,218 controls from the Swedish Family Cancer Database who were 55 years old or older in 1999 and had at least 1 male first-degree relative 40 years old or older and 1 female first-degree relative 30 years old or older. Likelihood ratios, calculated as the ratio of risk of observing a specific family history pattern in a p…

Demonstrating the characteristics of family practice through the family medicine clinic located at a college hospital.

During its development, family practice in Taiwan has been housed at the university/college hospitals, and different settings have served as the main bases for service and teaching. To demonstrate the progress made in the family medicine clinic at the Chung Shan Medical College Hospital and to evaluate the appropriateness of this kind of family practice setting, our patient population of 616 was investigated. There were 5177 patient encounters during the period from September 1987 to August 1989. Of 616 patients, 52.3% were male, the average age was 38.5 years, 85.1% lived in Taichung, where t…

Breast-feeding and family planning: a review of the relationships between breast-feeding and family planning.

A number of interrelated factors must be considered when breast-feeding is introduced as a concern for family planning programs: the number of pregnancies and births experienced, age at each pregnancy and birth, duration of the intervals between conceptions, lactation including duration and type, health and nutritional services available to meet the demands of pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum care. The dietary intake of the mother and her health and disease status have an effect on the duration of breast-feeding, and lactation has an effect on her ovulation and birth spacing. Those at parti…

[The role of family navigators in maternity clinics in the continued care of families].

BACKGROUND: The proportion of families identified as experiencing psychosocial difficulties in maternity clinics has increased. Therefore, evidence-based development of the healthcare system is urgently needed. This study aims to investigate whether family navigators in maternity clinics can contribute to improving patient management, specifically by referring families in need of support from the clinic to appropriate psychosocial and medical services. METHODS: Between May 16 and August 31, 2024, a nationwide survey of all maternity clinics with more than 300 births per year was conducted. Th…

Familial risk of vasospastic angina: a nationwide family study in Sweden.

OBJECTIVES: Vasospastic angina (VSA) is a complex coronary vasomotor disorder associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction and … spouses of affected individuals (HR: 0.63; 95% CI: 0.19 to 2.09). CONCLUSIONS: In this nationwide family study, we identified high familial risk for VSA independent of shared environmental risk factors. Our findings indicate that VSA tends to cluster in families, emphasising the need to explore genetic and non-genetic factors that may contribute.

The Effect of Multiple Sclerosis on Family Planning Among Saudi Families.

Background Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common neurological disorders in the world, and it is the leading cause of non-traumatic disability among young adults. While genetic susceptibility plays a role in MS development, the condition is not directly hereditary. Nevertheless, MS tends to aggregate within families, with first-degree relatives of affected individuals facing a higher risk than the general population. Additionally, family planning knowledge is insufficient among MS patients. Hence, this study aimed to assess the influence of MS disease on family planning and define t…

Familial Risks and Proportions Describing Population Landscape of Familial Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Familial cancer can be defined through the occurrence of the same cancer in two or more family members. We describe a nationwide landscape of familial cancer, including its frequency and the risk that it conveys, by using the largest family database in the world with complete family structures and medically confirmed cancers. PATIENTS/METHODS: We employed standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) to estimate familial risks for concordant cancer among first-degree relatives using the Swedish Cancer Registry from years 1958 through 2016. RESULTS: Cancer risks in a 20-84 year old populat…

Case Report: The first familial hCG syndrome in a Chinese family.

Familial hCG syndrome is a rare and benign cause of elevated serum beta human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). We present here a case of familial hCG syndrome diagnosed in a Hong Kong Chinese family, which we believe to be the first reported in Chinese. A 38-year-old woman presented with incidental finding of persistently elevated hCG, analytically confirmed both in urine and blood. Extensive radiological and biochemical work-up were performed but were negative for pregnancy and malignancy. Testing of another asymptomatic family member revealed unexplained elevation of serum hCG, confirming the d…
