Men's and Women's Approaches to Disclosure About BRCA-Related Cancer Risks and Family Planning Decision-Making.

Little is known about how men and women who test positive for a BRCA gene mutation or have a strong family history of carrying a BRCA mutation manage disclosures about their BRCA-related cancer risks and family planning decision-making. By conducting interviews with 25 men and 20 women, this study investigated men's and women's approaches to disclosing their BRCA-related cancer risks and family planning decision-making. Guided by the Disclosure Decision-Making Model (DD-MM), this study demonstrates that men and women assess both information and the recipients of disclosures when making disclos

Profiles of Social and Coping Resources in Families of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Relations to Parent and Child Outcomes.

This study described empirically derived profiles of parents' personal and social coping resources in a sample of 207 families of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Latent Profile Analysis identified four family profiles based on socieoeconomic risk, coping strategy utilization, family functioning, available social supports, and perceptions of family-centered support. During the time of children's transition to school, parents in the most disadvantaged group experienced the highest levels of parenting stress and depression, and their children had significantly lower adaptive beh

Update on Causes of Family Refusal for Organ Donation and the Related Factors: Reporting the Changes Over 6 Years.

INTRODUCTION: After significant improvement of the family consent rate to organ donation (OD) in recent years, owing to an increase in cultural activities and social awareness, a plateau has been reached. This study was performed to detect the causes for this plateau. METHODS: We reviewed exact causes of family refusal after providing a list of failed potential donors from July 2015 to December 2016. The expert coordinators responsible for handling the failed cases chose the cause of refusal from the previously prepared list. The list was rechecked by contacting the nondonating families by ph

Long-lasting effects of family-related factors on adults' ability to recognise brief facial expressions of emotion.

This study investigated whether adults' ability to attribute emotions to brief facial expressions (microexpressions) is associated with family-related environmental factors (FrFs) such as one's number of siblings (Experiment 1), attachment style (Experiment 2), or perceived parental authority style (Experiment 3). Participants' accuracy and reaction time (RT) to the recognition of anger, contempt, disgust, fear, happiness, and sadness to facial microexpressions (exposure: 100 ms) were measured with a six-alternative forced choice computerised method (6AFC). The attachment style and the authori

Illnesses in siblings of US patients with bipolar disorder relate to multigenerational family history and patients severity of illness.

BACKGROUND: Patients with bipolar disorder from the US have more early-onset illness and a greater familial loading for psychiatric problems than those from the Netherlands or Germany (abbreviated here as Europe). We hypothesized that these regional differences in illness burden would extend to the patients siblings. METHODS: Outpatients with bipolar disorder gave consent for participation in a treatment outcome network and for filling out detailed questionnaires. This included a family history of unipolar depression, bipolar disorder, suicide attempt, alcohol abuse/dependence, drug abuse/dep

Outcomes of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy in relation to familial history: a decision analysis (BRCR-D-16-00033).

BACKGROUND: Family history of breast cancer is associated with an increased risk of contralateral breast cancer (CBC) even in the absence of mutations in the breast cancer susceptibility genes BRCA1/2. We compared quality-adjusted survival after contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) with surveillance only (no CPM) among women with breast cancer incorporating the degree of family history. METHODS: We created a microsimulation model for women with first-degree, second-degree, and no family history treated for a stage I, II, or III estrogen receptor (ER)-positive or ER-negative breast canc

Communicating about obesity and weight-related topics with children with a physical disability and their families: spina bifida as an example.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of children with spina bifida (SB), their families and healthcare professionals (HCPs) when discussing weight-related topics. METHOD: In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with HCPs from Canadian outpatient SB clinics (n = 13), children aged 6-18 years with SB (n = 17) and their parents (n = 20). Data were analyzed using a phenomenological approach within an interpretative paradigm. RESULTS: Many HCPs were not confident talking about weight, concerned that they would damage relationships with children and families. Pa

Cathepsin Gene Family Reveals Transcriptome Patterns Related to the Infective Stages of the Salmon Louse Caligus rogercresseyi.

Cathepsins are proteases involved in the ability of parasites to overcome and/or modulate host defenses so as to complete their own lifecycle. However, the mechanisms underlying this ability of cathepsins are still poorly understood. One excellent model for identifying and exploring the molecular functions of cathepsins is the marine ectoparasitic copepod Caligus rogercresseyi that currently affects the Chilean salmon industry. Using high-throughput transcriptome sequencing, 56 cathepsin-like sequences were found distributed in five cysteine protease groups (B, F, L, Z, and S) as well as in an

Genetic polymorphisms in LDLR, APOB, PCSK9 and other lipid related genes associated with familial hypercholesterolemia in Malaysia.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by elevations in total cholesterol (TC) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc). Development of FH can result in the increase of risk for premature cardiovascular diseases (CVD). FH is primarily caused by genetic variations in Low Density Lipoprotein Receptor (LDLR), Apolipoprotein B (APOB) or Proprotein Convertase Subtilisin/Kexin type 9 (PCSK9) genes. Although FH has been extensively studied in the Caucasian population, there are limited reports of FH mutations in the Asian population. We investigated t

[The subpopulation of CD34+ cells and their importance in the healing of grafts in family-related allogenic transplants of peripheral stem cells].

CURRENT STATUS: The determination of concentration of CD34+ cells is the standard method for evaluation of the quality of a bone marrow graft and of peripheral stem cells. Although the relationship between the dose of CD34+ cells and the speed of graft healing in autologous transplants is a proven fact, it may not always be the case in allogenic transplants. PATIENTS AND METHOD: The correlation between the dose of CD34+ cell subpopulations and the speed of healing was monitored in patients indicated for allogenic transplantation of haematopoietic stem cells. The patients were divided accordin

Relation between reading problems and internalizing behavior in school for preadolescent children from economically disadvantaged families.

This longitudinal study of 105 economically disadvantaged children examined the relation between reading problems and internalizing behavior in 3rd- and 5th-grade assessments (8- to 12-year olds). The variable-centered results showed that reading problems predicted change in internalizing behavior in the context of child and family predictors. The person-centered results showed that children with reading problems in both grades had higher internalizing scores in 5th grade but not in 3rd grade than children with reading problems in 3rd grade or no problems. Child-reported negative emotion exper

A membrane-associated metalloprotease of Taenia solium metacestode structurally related to the FACE-1/Ste24p protease family.

The CaaX proteases are intimately involved in the post-translational modification of prenylated proteins and play a critical role in the activation/stabilization of membrane-bound or secreted molecules constituting the CAAX protein family. In this study, we have isolated a full-length cDNA putatively encoding a type I CaaX protease of the Taenia solium metacestode (TsM), which an agent causative of human neurocysticercosis. Relations between molecular and biological abnormalities in 11 families from siblings affected with methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase deficiency.

UNLABELLED: Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) deficiency is an autosomal recessive disorder resulting in elevated homocysteine levels in plasma and urine. MTHFR catalyses the reduction of methylenetetrahydrofolate to methyltetrahydrofolate, a cofactor for homocysteine remethylation to methionine. MTHFR deficiency may be diagnosed from infancy to adulthood with a broad spectrum of clinical symptoms. A molecular analysis of the MTHFR gene combined with an assessment of MTHFR activity, plasma homocysteine and folate in plasma and red blood cells (RBC), especially methylfolate, was asses

Familial aggregation of anxiety-related quantitative traits in generalized social phobia: clues to understanding "disorder" heritability?

Social phobia, particularly the generalized form, is strongly familial. Given the probable continuity from extremes of normative personality (e.g., shyness) to social phobia to personality disorder (e.g., avoidant personality disorder), it is unlikely that social phobia itself, at the level of an Axis I disorder, is transmitted. Rather, it seems more parsimonious, and in keeping with current notions about the structure and heritability of mental disorders, that one or more temperamental risk factors for social phobia is transmitted. The goal of this study was to explore this possibility by exa

Bilateral subdural effusions related to disease activity in familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis in an 8-month-old infant.

An 8-month-old girl had classic features of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). A presumptive diagnosis of familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis was made on the basis of her age and the presence of parental consanguinity. In view of abnormal neurologic findings at presentation, a magnetic resonance imaging scan was performed and showed bilateral proteinaceous subdural effusions. These resolved within 1 week of commencement of chemotherapy for the primary condition. These subdural effusions were the only objective documentations of central nervous system involvement, along with an i

Synthesis and structures of bis(dithiolene)molybdenum complexes related to the active sites of the DMSO reductase enzyme family.

Structural analogues of the reduced (Mo(IV)) sites of members of the DMSO reductase family of molybdoenzymes are sought. These sites usually contain two pterin-dithiolene cofactor ligands and one protein-based ligand. Reaction of [Mo(MeCN)3(CO)3] and [Ni(S2C2R2)2] affords the trigonal prismatic complexes [Mo(CO)2(S2C2R2)2] (R = Me (1), Ph (2)), which by carbonyl substitution serve as useful precursors to a variety of bis(dithiolene)molybdenum-(IV,V) complexes. Reaction of 1 with Et4NOH yields [MoO(S2C2Me2)2]2- (3), which is readily oxidized to [MoO(S2C2Me2)2]1- (4). The hindered arene oxide li

Olfactory neuroblastoma is not related to the Ewing family of tumors: absence of EWS/FLI1 gene fusion and MIC2 expression.

The relationship of olfactory neuroblastoma to the Ewing sarcoma family of tumors remains controversial due to its variable histopathology and to conflicting or inconsistent cytogenetic, immunophenotypic, and molecular data. To address this issue, we performed a morphologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular study of 20 olfactory neuroblastomas. Morphologically, the tumors consisted of nests of primitive small, round, blue cells, usually set in a background of neurofibrillary stroma. Immunohistochemical stains revealed strong reactivity for neuroendocrine markers (synaptophysin, chromogranin,
