Dicrocoeliasis (Lancet liver fluke disease) is caused by Dicrocoelium dendriticum, a trematode living in bile ducts of sheep, cattle and other mammals including man. Human infection is asymptomatic or mild to moderately severe, but being sporadic or rarely reported. This paper reported zoonotic dicrocoeliasis dendriticum among a farmer's family and his domestic animals. The father and mother were successfully treated with Triclabendazole and the children and animals were successfully treated with Mirazid and Oleo-resin solution of Commiphora molmol respectively.

We encountered a dairy farmer and his son with farmer's lung who had worked on the same farm for 25 years and 5 years, respectively. The son was admitted to our hospital because of cough, sputum, and shortness of breath. Chest computed tomography (CT) on admission revealed diffuse ground-glass opacities in both lung fields. Following admission, the clinical symptoms and radiological findings improved spontaneously without specific treatment. A provocation test (following return to work on the farm) elicited recurrence of the symptoms and radiological findings. He was diagnosed with acute hyper

The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a model of artificial insemination (AI) technology transferable to backyard pig farmers for strengthening pig productivity in rural areas in Thailand. An AI center, criteria and process for farmer selection, an AI training program, AI practice in pigs, and a backyard farmer network were created as a model. Five hundred and thirty-one farrowing records from 307 sows were analyzed. Farrowing rates (FR), total number of piglets born (TB), and number of piglets born alive (BA) were studied. AI has led to better results in FR, TB, and BA than natura…

BACKGROUND: Farming has been associated with respiratory symptoms and with protection against atopy. To date, effects of organic farming on respiratory health have not been studied.
AIMS: To (1) compare hay fever and asthma-like symptoms in organic and conventional farmers and (2) assess associations between current and childhood farm exposures and respiratory health effects by conducting a survey.
METHODS: Questionnaire data from 1205 conventional and 593 organic farmers were evaluated. Associations between health effects and farm exposures were assessed by logistic regression analyses.

A 58-year-old man, a dairy farmer, was admitted to Engaru Kosei Hospital because of cough, fever and dyspnea following repeated exposure to moldy silage in a silo. Chest radiography showed ground-glass opacity and tiny nodules in both lung fields. Arterial blood gas analysis showed severe hypoxia (PaO2, 30.8 torr). The patient was referred to Asahikawa Medical College Hospital for a diagnostic evaluation. At the time of admission, his symptoms were slightly resolved and the lung density on the chest radiograph was decreased. Pulmonary function tests revealed restrictive ventilatory impairment

A prospective study was undertaken by the Departments of Respiratory Medicine and Medical Microbiology at the Cork University Hospital, a. t … 0.005) in South-West Ireland. The persistence of F.L. in Ireland at a constant level suggests that farmers' working environment and farm practices need to be improved.

Farm workers handling animal feeds are exposed to a variety of chemicals, some of which may cause allergic contact dermatitis. A case of allergy to ethoxyquin (a preservative added to chicken feed to inhibit vitamin degradation) in a chicken farmer is presented. Although the offending allergen was identified in this patient, it proved difficult to find ethoxyquin-free chicken feed products and the patient's dermatitis persisted. When facing the clinical problem of dermatitis in animal workers, the possibility of allergic contact dermatitis to components in animal feeds must be considered.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether transbronchial biopsy (TBB) is useful for the diagnosis of acute farmer's lung (FL) by calculating the likelihood ratios (LHRs) of (1) simple pathologic criteria and (2) an overall assessment of the biopsy specimens.
DESIGN: Retrospective study in which a blinded analysis of 105 TBBs with adequate material from patients with parenchymal diseases (55 cases of FL matched with 50 control samples) was performed by two independent pathologists.
SETTING: Respiratory clinic of a university-affiliated referral center.
MEASUREMENTS: Three pathologic criteria wer

Since normal alveolar macrophages (AMs) can suppress T-cell proliferation to mitogenic and antigenic stimuli both in vitro and in vivo, we q … ter in vitro culture was tested in three groups of subjects: 12 patients with FL; four asymptomatic farmers (AS); and six normal volunteers (N). Release of GM-CSF by AMs was also measured. At all ratios tested, AMs from patients with FL did not suppress the lymphoproliferation but instead had an enhancing effect. In AS, AMs enhanced the proliferation at a …

Farmer's lung disease (FL), the commonest form of allergic alveolitis caused by repeated inhalation of mouldy hay, is associated with exposure to the fungus Aspergillus umbrosus among Finnish farmers. The antigen-binding avidity of A. umbrosus-specific IgG antibodies was measured in 12 FL patients in acute phases of initial and recurrent attacks and during 1 year follow up as well as in 12 healthy farmers and five healthy urban controls. The farmers' groups were further divided into two subgroups: subjects with short exposure (< 7 years) and subjects with long exposure (> 25 years). During the…

The effect of corticosteroid treatment on the course of farmer's lung (FL) was studied in 36 patients randomly allocated in a double-blind placebo-controlled study. All patients were in the acute stage of the disease and had had the first diagnosed attack of FL. Twenty patients were given prednisolone treatment for 8 wk. Sixteen patients received an 8-wk placebo treatment. One patient was withdrawn from the analysis when she terminated corticosteroid treatment because of side effects. After 1 month of treatment there was a significant difference (p = 0.03) in DLCO between the treatment groups.

A study of farmer's lung (FL) disease was carried out in 197 subjects engaged in farming and having respiratory complaints of varying duration. It revealed that 13.2% of the subjects had precipitating antibodies against thermophilic actinomycetes, with Faenia rectivirgula (Micropolyspora faeni) alone accounting for 85% of the positive reactions. Precipitating antibodies against Thermoactinomyces vulgaris and T. thalpophilus were observed only in 1.5% and 0.5% of the subjects, respectively. Two subjects concomitantly demonstrated F. rectivirgula and T. vulgaris-specific serum precipitins. Sixty

Lung-reactive antibodies were detected in sera of patients with farmer's lung disease and in sera of healthy persons. A solid-phase radioimmunoassay was adapted for measurement of titers of human antibodies to sodium-dodecyl-sulfate-solubilized lung proteins. The titers of antilung antibodies in patients sera were 2-5 times as much as those of healthy persons. Using the immunoblotting technique, antibodies to individual lung polypeptides could be detected. Although the specificity patterns of antibodies to lung polypeptides differed from one serum to another, patients sera contained, in genera

The follow-up study of 16 patients with farmer's lung and 35 farmers having antibody to thermophilic actinomyces was performed. The following results were obtained. Three patients out of 16 patients with farmer's lung were readmitted to the hospital. The patients out of 11 believed that the dust respirator is useful for prevention against the development of farmer's lung. Any new patient was not found out from farmers having antibody to thermophilic actinomyces in 1985.

A farmer's wife who had helped with lambing aborted spontaneously in March after a short febrile illness in the 28th week of her pregnancy. She developed disseminated intravascular coagulation post partum with acute renal failure and pulmonary oedema. Recovery was complete after two weeks of hospital care. A strain of Chlamydia psittaci, probably of ovine origin, was isolated from the placenta and fetus. The patient's serum showed rising titres of antibody against chlamydia group antigen; the placental and fetal isolates; and a known ovine abortion, but not a known avian, strain of C psittaci.
