PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of contrast enhanced computed tomography (CECT) in emergency departments for diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis (NF) and for differential diagnosis of other musculoskeletal infections; to correlate radiological findings with the laboratory risk indicator for necrotizing fasciitis (LRINEC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 7 radiological parameters to be analysed on CECT scans were established, exams of 36 patients with proven diagnosis of NF (n 12) and other musculoskeletal infections (n 24) were retrospectively reviewed; LRINEC score was calculated. Fisher'

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressive, life-threatening soft-tissue infection requiring prompt diagnosis and aggressive surgical intervention. Although approximately 20% of NF cases arise from postoperative infections, its occurrence after cesarean delivery is extremely rare, with an estimated incidence of 0.18%. We report a case of a 35-year-old primigravida with no significant medical history who underwent emergency cesarean section for non-reassuring fetal status. On postoperative day (POD) 6, she developed fever, elevated inflammatory markers, and uterine tenderness consisten

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare, rapidly progressive soft-tissue infection associated with high morbidity and mortality. Diabetes, obesity, and immunosuppression are well-known risk factors that predispose to severe disease and atypical presentations. Complications such as pelvic osteomyelitis and fungal coinfection are exceptionally uncommon in NF and are associated with markedly worse outcomes. Early recognition and immediate surgical intervention are critical to improving survival. We report the case of a 64-year-old woman with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes, obesity, and baseline g

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare neutrophilic dermatosis that can mimic other severe conditions, complicating diagnosis. We report a case of PG of the knee initially mistaken for necrotizing fasciitis (NF) in a 68-year-old woman who presented with knee swelling, erythema, papules, and pustules following a fall. Despite antibiotic therapy and surgical debridement for suspected NF, the patient's fever persisted, and laboratory markers (elevated WBC and C-reactive protein) did not improve. Histopathology revealed a dense neutrophilic infiltrate, and negative cultures ruled out infection, leadi

This report describes a rare case of necrotizing fasciitis (NF) in a previously healthy 9-year-old girl, emphasizing the complexities and urgent needs associated with its diagnosis and treatment in children. NF, a severe soft-tissue infection characterized by rapid progression and often fatal outcomes, presents diagnostic challenges owing to nonspecific initial symptoms such as pain, erythema, and edema. This patient presented to the emergency department with fever, arm redness, and blisters after the initial discharge with antibiotics from another facility. Despite the lack of clear historica

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) are associated with a fulminating course because of their rapid destruction of tissue planes underlying the skin. Aeromonas -associated monomicrobial NSTIs are usually associated with exposure to fresh water, particularly among agricultural workers and fish handlers. Albeit uncommon in incidence, urgent medical and surgical intervention are required once a diagnosis has been made.
CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old male patient, a known case of alcoholic liver disease, presented to the emergency department with pain and diffuse swelling of bila

Aeromonas species can cause gastroenteritis, soft tissue infections, hepatobiliary tract and other infections. While most reported soft tissue infections have been attributed to Aeromonas hydrophila, we report a case of necrotizing fasciitis caused by Aeromonas veronii biovar sobria. Prompt and accurate diagnosis cum treatment could help save children with Aeromonas soft tissue infections from developing a bacteremia with extended morbidity and mortality.

Cupping therapy is a widely practiced form of adjunctive medicine and it has been used since ancient times. It involves using cups over the skin to create negative pressure. The exact mechanism by which cupping therapy exerts its effects is unknown, but it is thought to act as an artificial kidney. In this report, we present a case of a 35-year-old male who developed Pseudomonas-positive necrotizing fasciitis following wet cupping therapy. He refused surgical intervention and subsequently died. Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe soft tissue infection that has a high mortality rate. The only pro

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a complicated skin and soft tissue infection that has a high mortality rate and often requires surgical debridement, intravenous antibiotics, and wound care. The nurse practitioner needs to be aware of the common characteristics of NF and depending on their clinical environment, know when to refer the patient to a local emergency department (ED) for further evaluation and treatment and/or consult for hospital admission from an ED.

To describe and compare the characteristics of necrotizing fasciitis (NF) in patients with and without haematological malignancy. All adult patients diagnosed with NF and treated at our hospital were included (January 2010-March 2019). Diagnosis was based on intraoperative findings or consistent clinical/radiological characteristics, and patients were classified as group A (with haematological malignancy) or group B (without haematological malignancy). Student's t (quantitative), Fisher's exact (qualitative), and Kaplan-Meyer tests were used for the statistical analysis. The study included 29

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a devastating disease with substantial morbidity and mortality. Poor outcomes are attributed to delayed diagnosis and management. Tenwek Hospital, a teaching and referral center in rural Kenya, manages many cases despite variable resources. We aimed to understand the burden of NF.
METHODS: All patients with admission NF diagnosis who presented in 2017 were reviewed for demographics, investigations, treatment, and outcomes. The primary outcome was unfavorable outcome defined as in-hospital mortality or amputation. Secondary outcomes were discharge diag

BACKGROUND: The rapid form of subcutaneous emphysema after an insect bite is hard to distinguish from necrotizing fasciitis.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report a case of benign subcutaneous emphysema after an insect bite on the hand of an 18-year-old Caucasian man. The puncture area in the first web space of his hand was erythematous and swollen. After 4 h, he began to hear crackling sounds in the hand. Although conservative management was provided, he experienced gradually increasing pain and rapid progression in swelling and crepitation. The symptoms regressed after fasciotomy.

The case of an 82-year-old woman with bilateral necrotizing fasciitis and unilateral orbital involvement is presented. A mixed infection consisting of Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Aspergillus fumigatus could be verified. The latter was detected by molecular pathological investigations. Treatment consisted of repeated surgical debridement in combination with systemic broad-spectrum antibiotic and antimycotic treatment. Furthermore, the patient received low-dose systemic corticosteroids. After remission of acute inflammation, the healing process by secondary intention was u

We report a case of necrotizing skin infection caused by Yokenella regensburgei in an immunosuppressed patient with orthotopic liver transplantation. Initial bacterial culture identification was suggestive of Hafnia alvei. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) confirmed identification of Y. regensburgei. Necrotizing fasciitis is potentially fatal and requires aggressive management, including early diagnosis, appropriate antibiotic selection, and operative debridement.

Necrotizing fasciitis is the generic term for a series of progressive gangrenous infections of the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Typically, necrotizing fasciitis start with an, often small, infected lesion with atypical symptoms, which then quickly develops into a rapidly spreading, massive infection. The primary therapy is excision of all necrotic tissue in combination with treatment of systemic symptoms such as shock. The defects resulting from rigorous excision are often very large. Once they are clean, they require closure with an autograft. This article reviews the symptoms and treatment
