The role of tryptophan metabolism and food craving in the relationship between obesity and bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) have a significantly increased risk of obesity-related conditions. The imbalance between food intake and energy expenditure is assumed to be a major risk factor for obesity in BD. This study analyzed food craving in relation to anthropometric, metabolic, and neurobiological parameters in a well-characterized cohort of euthymic individuals with BD. METHODS: One-hundred-thirty-five patients completed the Food-Craving Inventory assessing four categories of food craving (fat, fast-food, sweets and carbohydrate craving). Additionally, clini

Role of cold-inducible RNA-binding protein in hypothalamic regulation of feeding behavior during fasting and cold exposure.

Appetite regulation is a complex process that is critical for maintaining energy balance and is governed by intricate molecular and cellular mechanisms in the hypothalamus. RNA-binding proteins play vital roles in the post-transcriptional regulation of mRNA and influence feeding behavior and energy metabolism. This study explored the role of cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (Cirbp) in hypothalamic neurons under metabolic stress conditions, such as fasting and cold exposure. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) of the hypothalami from fasted mice identified 67 differentially expressed RNA-binding

Ultrasonographic evaluation of gastric contents in term pregnant women fasted for six hours.

BACKGROUND: Current fasting guidelines suggest six hours are adequate to minimise the aspiration risk after a light meal consumed by pregnant women undergoing elective caesarean section. We assessed gastric contents in non-labouring pregnant women, using ultrasonographic analysis. METHODS: In a prospective study, pregnant women ≥36 weeks' gestation, without conditions likely to influence gastric emptying, underwent ultrasonographic analysis of their gastric antrum, after six hours of fasting following a standardised light meal. The primary outcome was solid food content in the antrum. Other o

The anti-ghrelin Spiegelmer NOX-B11-3 blocks ghrelin- but not fasting-induced neuronal activation in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus.

The hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (Arc) is the presumed target site for the orexigenic hormone ghrelin, which is secreted from the stomach during fasting. Ghrelin directly activates Arc neurones. Similar to exogenous ghrelin, overnight food deprivation also induces c-Fos expression in the Arc of mice. In the present study, we tested the role of endogenous ghrelin in the fasting-induced c-Fos expression in the Arc of mice. We used NOX-B11-3, the latest generation of the recently developed ghrelin-binding compounds, so-called RNA Spiegelmers (SPM) to block endogenous ghrelin action during food de

Effect of food on salsalate absorption.

To assess the effect of food on salsalate absorption, single 1500-mg oral doses of salsalate were administered to 17 men under fasted and fed conditions according to a randomized open-label crossover design. A 7-day washout separated treatment periods. Blood samples were drawn throughout the 48-h period following dose administration and the resulting plasma samples assayed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for unchanged drug, salsalate, and the major metabolite, salicylic acid. When results for the fasted and fed treatments were compared, no significant differences were observed

Synergy between amylin and cholecystokinin for inhibition of food intake in mice.

Several gastrointestinal peptides which are secreted in response to nutrients have been reported to suppress food intake. Amylin is a peptide hormone co-secreted with insulin from pancreatic beta-cells in response to nutrient stimuli. Cholesystokinin (CCK) is secreted from duodenal and jejunal mucosal cells in response to fat and protein. Amylin and CCK-8 have been reported to reduce food intake in rodents when given centrally as well as peripherally. Amylin injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) reduced food intake over the subsequent 30 min in overnight fasted mice by a maximum of 57 +/- 6% with

Acute stress suppresses hunger-driven food seeking through PVN activation: Reversal by anxiolytic drug and ghrelin receptor agonist, with anxiolytic-like effects of refeeding.

Feeding behavior is influenced by both metabolic drive and emotional context, yet how acute stress interferes with hunger-driven motivation remains poorly understood. Using a conflict-based open-field feeding paradigm, we examined how 30-min restraint stress alters food-seeking behavior in fasted mice and how pharmacological or physiological interventions modulate this effect. Acute restraint abolished fasting-induced increases in food seeking and intake, an effect that was reversed by intraperitoneal diazepam, an anxiolytic, and by MK-677, a ghrelin receptor agonist that enhances appetite. Comparative intake of white- versus orange-colored maize by Zambian children in the context of promotion of biofortified maize.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A deficiency is associated with poor health outcomes related to reproduction, growth, vision, and immunity. Biofortification of staple crops is a novel strategy for combating vitamin A deficiency in high-risk populations where staple food intakes are high. African populations are proposed beneficiaries of maize (Zea mays) biofortified with provitamin A carotenoids, often called "orange maize" because of its distinctive deep yellow-orange kernels. The color facilitates ready recognition but presents a cultural challenge to maize-consuming populations, including those in much

Nutrition-Related and Self-Rated Health Outcomes Among Lottery-Assigned Residents and Individuals Waitlisted for Subsidized Rental Units in Chinatown, Boston, MA.

Background: Housing is a social determinant of health. In 2015, a lottery assigned low-income families from a waitlist to a new subsidized building (NSB) in Chinatown, Boston, MA. In 2019-2020, we explored associations between housing status (NSB or being on waitlist) and self-rated physical and mental health; household food insecurity (FI); weekly consumption of fruits/vegetables (FV), weekly consumption of soda, and monthly consumption of fast food. Methods: Surveys were sent to NSB (n = 95) and waitlist (n = 2498) households. Logistic and linear regressions explored associations between hou

Risk assessment for infants exposed to furan from ready-to-eat thermally processed food products in Poland.

BACKGROUND: Thermal processes and long storage of food lead to reactions between reducing sugars and amino acids, or with ascorbic acid, carbohydrates or polyunsaturated fatty acids. As a result of these reactions, new compounds are created. One of these compounds having an adverse effect on human health is furan. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper was to estimate the infants exposure to furan found in thermally processed jarred food products, as well as characterizing the risk by comparing the exposure to the reference dose (RfD) and calculating margins of exposure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The

Pharmacokinetic properties of the clinical drug candidate PRI-002 with regard to genotype, sex, age, dose-dependence and food effects in mice.

The d-enantiomeric peptide RD2 (named Contraloid or PRI-002 in clinical trials) was developed for the direct disassembly of toxic amyloid-β (Aβ) oligomers, which are the most neurotoxic aggregate species and play a key role in the development and progression of Alzheimer´s disease (AD). PRI-002/RD2 already demonstrated its safety and tolerability in three phase I clinical trials in young healthy volunteers and patients with mild neurocognitive impairment (MCI) or mild dementia due to AD. Results from a phase II clinical trial with PRI-002/RD2 are expected this year, which was designed to demon

Synthetic and plant-derived cannabinoid receptor antagonists show hypophagic properties in fasted and non-fasted mice.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Obesity is a severe health problem in the modernized world and understanding the central nervous mechanisms underlying food-seeking behaviour and reward are at the forefront of medical research. Cannabinoid receptors have proven an efficient target to suppress hunger and weight gain by their pharmacological inactivation. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: A standard fasted protocol and a novel long-term home-cage observation system with free-feeding animals were used to assess the feeding behaviour of mice treated with the CB1 antagonist AM251. Similarly, the effects of the phytoc

A Dietary Pattern for High Estimated Total Fat Amount Is Associated with Enhanced Allergy Sensitization and Atopic Diseases among Singapore/Malaysia Young Chinese Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Frequent dietary patterns for fast food diets are suggested to be a risk factor for atopic disease development. Excessive dietary fats in fast foods are postulated to promote low-grade chronic inflammation. However, no studies in Asia have yet to characterize the dietary pattern for high-fat foods with atopic diseases. Thus, this study aims to assess the association between dietary fats with the prevalence of atopic diseases in an allergic cohort. METHODS: Through an investigator-administered questionnaire that follows the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood…

Probable first report of a motor deafferentation syndrome in the Paraguayan War.

The Paraguayan War ended 150 years ago. Back then, there were outbreaks of combatants' limb weakness and tingling related to "palustrian cachexia", not clearly funded at the time on nutritional deficiency, the use of native flora to feed troops, and alcoholism. We report a case of a soldier with ascending paralysis, mental confusion and finally tetraplegia with preserved oculomotricity. This would probably be a case of locked-in syndrome (LIS) due to Gayet-Wernicke's encephalopathy consequent to thiamine deficiency. The role of thiamine in the peripheral or central nervous system expression wa

[Staphylococcal food poisoning and MRSA enterocolitis].

Staphylococcal food poisoning is a gastrointestinal illness. It is caused by eating foods contaminated with enterotoxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus. The enterotoxins are fast acting, sometimes causing illness within one to six hours. Patients typically experience nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. Diagnosis of staphylococcal food poisoning is generally based only on the symptoms of patients. The treatments for these patients are rest and plenty of fluids. Antibiotics are not useful in treating this illness. On the other hand, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRS

Alcoholic rhabdomyolysis: an experimental model in the rat.

The main features of alcoholic rhabdomyolysis-skeletal muscle necrosis, marked elevation of serum creatine phosphokinase, and myoglobinuria-were produced in rats by a combination of relatively prolonged (2 to 4 weeks) exposure to ethanol and a brief period of food deprivation. This observation suggests that fasting may similarly trigger muscle injury during binge drinking in man. The effect of fasting is in part related to an increase in blood alcohol due to reduced alcohol clearance and in part caused by a fasting-induced potentiation of the toxic effects of high concentrations of alcohol of

Antibiogram of isolated bacteria and overview of resistome and virulome of multi-drug resistant Escherichia coli from ready-to-eat foods vended in Lagos, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Ready-to-eat (RTE) foods are popular fast-foods due to their convenience and affordability. However, they pose huge public health risks due to the presence of antibiotic-resistant and virulent pathogens. Nevertheless, such data is sparse in Nigeria where RTE food consumption is widespread. This study determined antibiotic susceptibility patterns, and identified antibiotic resistance and virulence genes in bacteria from 199 RTE food samples (aadun, biscuits, bread, eko, kokoro and shawarma) vended within Lagos State, Nigeria. Bacteria were recovered on nutrient agar and MacConkey ag

CART peptide diurnal rhythm in brain and effect of fasting.

We have recently shown that CART peptides exhibit a diurnal rhythm in blood that is affected by food intake and glucocorticoids. In the present study, we extend our observations by demonstrating that CART peptides also exhibit a diurnal rhythm in several brain regions, notably the nucleus accumbens, hypothalamus and amygdala, but not in the midbrain. To examine whether the CART peptide rhythm was dependent on food intake, animals were food-deprived for 24 h. In regular-fed animals, CART peptide levels were lower in the morning compared to evening hours. However, this diurnal variation of CART
