OBJECTIVE: To elucidate mothers' experiences related to separation from their newborns during their 1st week of life, when the newborns had been transferred to a neonatal intensive-care unit (NICU).
DESIGN: A phenomenologic-hermeneutic approach. Tape-recorded narrative interviews were conducted 1 to 2 months postpartum in the participants' homes. The mothers were asked to describe and reflect upon their experiences during the time when they were separated from their children.

In the two years following the implementation in Liverpool of a case conference system for dealing with non-accidental injury to children, 76 children were discussed at 73 such conferences. Factors in both the children and their families were identified as predisposing to non-accidental injury, notably male sex, illegitimacy, low birthweight, previous injuries in the children, the mothers having become pregnant at an early age, and the families having environmental stress factors. The evolving rôle of the case conference system in providing support for affected families is discussed.

Childhood family structure has been shown to play an important role in shaping a child's life course development, especially in industrialised societies. One hypothesis which could explain such findings is that parental investment is likely to be diluted in families without both natural parents. Fifteen patients with the loin pain and haematuria syndrome (LPH) were compared with 10 patients with complicated renal stone disease referred to the same tertiary centre and matched for age, sex and duration of illness. Psychological drawbacks of intensive obstetrics on the one hand and the results from psychology in the perinatal period on the other hand demand a new mental hygiene in the delivery room and on maternity wards. The "family-oriented obstetrics" met these problems best. Interviews were made with 650 mothers, just after delivery to find on the attitude for "family-oriented obstetrics".
