Corticosterone mediates telomere length in raptor chicks exposed to chemical mixture.

Stressors experience early in life by animals may have carry over impacts on life-traits over the life cycle. Accelerated telomere attrition … whether nestling exposure to metals and pesticides was related to corticosterone concentrations in feathers and telomere length measured in 47 individuals. Lead and mercury concentrations in blood ranged from 2.3 to 59.0 µg L-1 and to 1.4 to 115.7 µg L-1, respectively, and were below the toxicity thresholds proposed for wildlife. Rodenticides were detecte …

Metals in Laysan albatrosses from Midway Atoll.

We examined the concentrations of lead, cadmium, selenium, chromium, manganese, arsenic, tin, and mercury in the heart, liver, kidney, salt gland, and feathers of adult (n = 10) and young (n = 15) Laysan albatrosses (Diomedea immutabilis) from Midway Atoll in the north-central Pacific Ocean. Lead poisoning has been reported in some Laysans nesting near buildings on Midway, but other heavy metals have not been examined. We examined tissue distribution of metals by age and gender (adults only). We also examined tissue concentrations in three birds with a droop-wing syndrome characteristic of lea…

Synthesis of (Furyl)Methyl Disulfides via Tandem Reaction of Conjugated Ene-Yne-Ketones with Acetyl-Masked Disulfide Nucleophiles.

In this study, we outline a general method for the construction of various (furyl)methyl disulfides from acetyl-masked disulfide nucleophiles and ene-yne-ketones. This protocol is feathered by metal-free, simple experimental conditions, high efficiency, and scalable potential, which make it attractive and practical.

Iridescent structural coloration in a crested Cretaceous enantiornithine bird from the Jehol Biota.

Caudate dopaminergic dysfunction is implied in the pathophysiology of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Still, connectivity specificities of the caudate nucleus (CN) subdivisions and the effect of dopamine are poorly understood. We collected MRI and neuropsychological data from 34 PD patients and 26 age- and sex-matched healthy elderly individuals (HEs) in this study. Resting-state functional connectivity analysis revealed that compared to the other CN subdivisions, the CN head was more strongly connected to the default mode network (DMN), the CN body to the frontoparietal network (FPN),

Star finches Neochmia ruficauda have a visual preference for white dot patterns: a possible case of trypophilia.

Many animals have polka dot patterns on their body surface, some of which are known to have signalling functions; however, their evolutionary origins remain unclear. Dot patterns can trigger a fear response (trypophobia) in humans and are known to function as aposematic signals in non-human animals, suggesting that dots may deserve attention for biological reasons. Interestingly in many birds, plumage dot patterns serve for social/sexual signalling. To understand their evolution, we have focused on the sensory bias hypothesis, which predicts the role of pre-existing sensory preference driven b

Timing and magnitude of net methylmercury effects on waterbird reproductive output are dependent on food availability.

Mercury (Hg) is a globally distributed pollutant. Its sub-lethal effects on reproduction of birds have been used as indicators of contamination and of potential demographic effects. However, studies typically used single endpoints that might not be representative of entire reproductive cycle. To estimate timing and net cumulative effects of Hg exposure under field conditions, we used observational data over 11 years from >1200 nests of great egrets breeding under temporally and spatially varying food availability and Hg exposures in the Florida Everglades. We collected measures of fish biomass

Molecular characteristics and site specific distribution of the pigment of the silky fowl.

Silky fowl, a breed of chicken, is hyperpigmented in its various internal tissues. The pigment was extracted from various tissues of two strains of Silky fowl to determine its molecular structure and internal distribution. Analysis by infrared spectroscopy showed two spectrum patterns of the pigment in Silky fowl; one is from ovary and testis, the other is from periosteum and feather. The difference between the two spectra is possibly due to the sulfur contents of melanin. Especially, the spectra of the pigments from feather and periosteum shared the characteristics of synthesized melanin spec

Experimental infections in red-legged partridges reveal differences in host competence between West Nile and Usutu virus strains from Southern Spain.

INTRODUCTION: West Nile virus (WNV) and Usutu virus (USUV) are emerging zoonotic arboviruses sharing the same life cycle with mosquitoes as … dges inoculated with WNV/NY99 and WNV/08 strains showed clinical signs such as weight loss, ruffled feathers, and lethargy, which were not observed in USUV/09-inoculated individuals. Although statistically significant differences in mortality were not observed, partridges inoculated with WNV strains developed significantly higher viremia and viral loads in …

Mercury toxicity risk and corticosterone levels across the breeding range of the Yellow-breasted Chat.

Mercury (Hg) is an environmental contaminant that can negatively impact human and wildlife health. For songbirds, Hg risk may be elevated near riparian habitats due to the transfer of methylmercury (MeHg) from aquatic to terrestrial food webs. We measured Hg levels in tail feathers sampled across the breeding range of the Yellow-breasted Chat (Icteria virens), a riparian songbird species of conservation concern. We assessed the risk of Hg toxicity based on published benchmarks. Simultaneously, we measured corticosterone, a hormone implicated in the stress response system, released via the hypo…

Experimental infection of Carrion crows (Corvus corone) with two European West Nile virus (WNV) strains.

West Nile virus (WNV) has become a wide-spread arbovirus in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin countries. This emerging zoonotic disease disseminated 13 years ago in North America where its impact on animal and public health has been considerable. Although American corvids have been the most reliable avian sentinels for WN surveillance in the United States, there is so far no data available about the susceptibility of their Western European counterparts to WNV. Clinical follow-up and serum, oral swabs and feathers viral RNA load monitoring was herein performed on wild-caught Carrion crows (Cor…

Seeking soil microbial degraders and enzymatic genes for efficient biomass recycling.

Biodegradation is the most sustainable biomass recycling strategy, yet the absence of efficient microbial degraders remains a critical bottleneck. While soil microorganisms can decompose diverse biomass, their functional specificity for distinct agricultural by-products remains inadequately characterized. To address this, five agricultural by-products, including fish skin, soybean meal, shrimp shell, corn straw and chicken feather, were individually or combinatorially incubated in soil. Comparative analysis of 16 S rRNA amplicons and metagenomics from actively degrading microbial communities v

Behavioral smearing and physiological secretions drive divergent microbiome assembly during breeding in the crested ibis.

Host-microbiota interactions represent a key axis in animal adaptation, especially in species displaying pronounced seasonal variation in be … h smearing behavior. Community assembly also showed clear season- and site-specific variation. Neck feathers exhibited a 36.5% better fit to the neutral model, indicating a stronger contribution of stochastic assembly, likely associated with microbial dispersal during smearing of black secretions. In contrast, neck skin showed a 36.3% lower neutrality and …

Adaptive host-abandonment of ectoparasites before fledging? Within-brood distribution of nest mites in house sparrow broods.

We studied the within-brood distribution of a haematophagous mite Pellonyssus reedi living on nestling house sparrows (Passer domesticus) near the time of fledging. We measured the natural level of infestation of individual nestlings, and determined the feeding efficiency of mites, by scoring their feeding status. Within-brood distribution of mite loads was unrelated to nestling body mass, tarsus length, or immunocompetence. These results did not support parasite preference for large or susceptible hosts. Mite feeding-efficiency was also unrelated to these nestling characteristics, confirming

Terrestrial mercury transformation in the Tibetan Plateau: New evidence from stable isotopes in upland buzzards.

Understanding the geochemical cycle of mercury (Hg) in the high-altitude Tibetan Plateau is of great value for studying the long-range transport of Hg. Herein, speciation and isotopic compositions of Hg in the muscle and feathers of upland buzzards (Buteo hemilasius) were studied to trace the terrestrial transformation of Hg in the Tibetan Plateau. Very low Hg content and relatively low δ202Hg values (feather: -0.77 ± 0.50‰, n = 9, muscle: -1.29 ± 0.29‰, n = 13, 1SD) were observed in upland buzzards. In contrast, the Δ199Hg values could be as high as 2.89‰ in collected samples. To our knowledg…

An Unusual Case of Phagocytic Histiocytes on Peripheral Blood Smear of a Patient With Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Endocarditis.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare disorder of the immune system that may rapidly progress into life-threatening complications. There is uncontrolled activation of histiocytes and phagocytic macrophages, resulting in excess secretions of cytokines that manifest into systemic hyperinflammation affecting several organs. HLH may present as primary due to underlying familial or genetic causes or as secondary due to underlying conditions such as malignancies, infections, or autoimmune disorders. This case is of a seven-year-old girl who developed culture-proven MRSA infective endoca
