Maternal postpartum depression and responsive feeding in the first 2 years: A review.

Maternal postpartum depression can influence caregiving behaviors, including the ability to practice responsive feeding. Responsive feeding … summarizes current literature exploring the association between maternal postpartum depression and feeding behaviors among children aged 0-24 months. Twelve studies from the USA, Australia, China, India, the UK, and the Caribbean explored this relationship. The prevalence of postpartum depression varied widely, from 10 % to 60 % of participants. In general, mater …

Sequential treatment of a feeding problem using a pacifier and flipped spoon.

Parents may be reluctant to treat the feeding disorder of a chronically ill child who exhibits distressed behavior during feeding. In this study, we identified a child with chronic medical problems and a feeding disorder who cried during feedings. We introduced treatment components sequentially to address parental concerns about crying. First, we used a pacifier to reduce crying, and then we used a flipped spoon to increase mouth clean. The results showed that a sequential approach to treatment can be effective for children with complex medical and behavioral problems.

Eating behaviours and personality characteristics of clinicians and researchers working in eating disorders.

Disturbances in eating behaviours and differences in personality characteristics, such as perfectionism, cognitive flexibility, and obsessive-compulsive behaviours, are commonly reported in individuals with eating disorders (ED) and can influence the development and maintenance of EDs. The presence of these characteristics in ED professionals may also have an influence on their patients. The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of the presence of these behaviours and characteristics in ED clinicians/researchers (EDCR). This study examined whether these constructs differed among

Predictors of recovery in eating disorders: A focus on different definitions.

OBJECTIVE: Only half of the patients with eating disorders (EDs) fully recover. To increase these rates, knowledge about predictors is essential. Previous studies found that purging behaviors, BMI, ED duration, and depression, predicted symptomatic ED recovery. The current study investigated these four predictors for symptomatic improvement and the subjective experience of recovery. METHOD: Participants who completed the baseline and second wave of the Netherlands Eating disorder Registry (NER) (N = 374), were categorized into: (1) Subjective recovery; (2) Clinical improvement; (3) Symptomati

Beliefs about infant regulation, early infant behaviors and maternal postnatal depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Young infants may have irregular sleeping and feeding patterns. Such regulation difficulties are known correlates of maternal de … g problems but not regulation beliefs. The most important infant predictor was sleep behaviors with feeding behaviors accounting for little additional variance. An interaction between regulation beliefs and sleep behaviors was found. Mothers with high regulation beliefs were more susceptible to postnatal depressive symptoms when infant sleep behaviors were problem …

Anorexia following the intrahypothalamic administration of amylin.

The intrahypothalamic injection of rat amylin reduced feeding in schedule-fed rats for eight hours. Specificity of this anorectic response was indicated by an appropriate dose-response relationship and the absence of effect of human amylin. Amylin-induced anorexia was accompanied by alterations in neurotransmitter metabolism similar to those observed in anorectic tumor-bearing rats. These results indicate that amylin may inhibit feeding by acting directly on hypothalamic neurons to alter metabolism of neurotransmitter systems known to affect feeding behavior.

Taste and smell are associated with dietary intake, eating behavior, nutritional status, and health-related quality of life in children with cancer.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Smell and taste changes are frequently reported bothersome treatment symptoms during treatment for childhood cancer and assumed to influence outcomes such as food intake. Since nutritional status of children with cancer is already vulnerable, any detrimental effects on food intake should be prevented. Therefore, understanding the exact relationship between chemosensory changes and dietary intake, eating behavior, and other domains such as health-related quality of life (HRQoL), is important for improving outcomes. METHODS: In this longitudinal study, we followed 87 childhoo

Distinct Subsets of Lateral Hypothalamic Neurotensin Neurons are Activated by Leptin or Dehydration.

The lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) is essential for ingestive behavior but it remains unclear how LHA neurons coordinate feeding vs. drinking. Most LHA populations promote food and water consumption but LHA neurotensin (Nts) neurons preferentially induce water intake while suppressing feeding. We identified two molecularly and projection-specified subpopulations of LHA Nts neurons that are positioned to coordinate either feeding or drinking. One subpopulation co-expresses the long form of the leptin receptor (LepRb) and is activated by the anorectic hormone leptin (NtsLepRb neurons). A separa

Classification and Analysis of Multiple Cattle Unitary Behaviors and Movements Based on Machine Learning Methods.

The behavior of livestock on farms is the primary representation of animal welfare, health conditions, and social interactions to determine whether they are healthy or not. The objective of this study was to propose a framework based on inertial measurement unit (IMU) data from 10 dairy cows to classify unitary behaviors such as feeding, standing, lying, ruminating-standing, ruminating-lying, and walking, and identify movements during unitary behaviors. Classification performance was investigated for three machine learning algorithms (K-nearest neighbors (KNN), random forest (RF), and extreme

Gut microbiota-derived gamma-aminobutyric acid improves host appetite by inhibiting satiety hormone secretion.

Globally, appetite disorders have become an increasingly prominent public health issue. While short-term appetite loss may seem relatively harmless, prolonged instances can lead to serious physical and mental damage. In recent years, numerous studies have highlighted the significant role of the "microbiota-gut-brain" axis in the regulation of feeding behavior in organisms, suggesting that targeting the gut microbiota may be a novel therapeutic strategy for appetite disorders. However, the molecular mechanisms through which the gut microbiota mediates the increase in host appetite and the causa…

Dengue-mediated changes in the vectorial capacity of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae): manipulation of transmission or infection by-product?

An arthropod's vectorial capacity summarizes its disease transmission potential. Life-history traits, such as fecundity or survival, and behavioral traits, such as locomotor activity, host-seeking and feeding behavior, are important components of vectorial capacity. Studies have shown that mosquito-borne pathogens may alter important vectorial capacity traits of their mosquito vectors, thus directly impacting their transmission and epidemic potential. Here, we compile and discuss the evidence supporting dengue-mediated changes in the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti (L.), its primary vector…

Validation of a methodology for characterization of rumination, lying, standing, and performing non-nutritive oral behaviors and behavioral patterns in Holstein dairy calves.

Calf behavior is closely related to its early growth, production performance, and health performance. Continuous behavior recording is the most accurate but also time-consuming method used for monitoring animal behaviors, so the instantaneous sampling method is often adopted to minimize the time required to quantify behavioral observations in animal studies. Moreover, the optimal sampling intervals required to yield accurate information for estimating Holstein dairy calves' behaviors are still unknown. Our primary objective was to determine the most optimal sampling intervals for monitoring be

Exploring the interaction of viscosity and nipple design on feeding performance in an infant pig model.

Infant feeding behaviors are modulated via sensorimotor feedback, such that sensory perturbations can significantly impact performance. Properties of the nipple and milk (e.g., nipple hole size and viscosity) are critical sources of sensory information. However, the direct effects of varying milk and nipple properties on infant motor output and the subsequent changes in feeding performance are poorly understood. In this study, we use an infant pig model to explore the interaction between nipple hole size and milk viscosity. Using high-speed videofluoroscopy and electromyography, we measured ke…

Real-Time Value Integration during Economic Choice Is Regulated by Orbitofrontal Cortex.

Neural correlates implicate the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) in value-based or economic decision making [1-3]. Yet inactivation of OFC in rats performing a rodent version of the standard economic choice task is without effect [4, 5], a finding more in accord with ideas that the OFC is primarily necessary for behavior when new information must be taken into account [6-9]. Neural activity in the OFC spontaneously updates to reflect new information, particularly about outcomes [10-16], and the OFC is necessary for adjustments to learned behavior only under these conditions [4, 16-26]. Here, we merg

The antiviral immunity of ticks against transmitted viral pathogens.

Ticks, being obligate hematophagous arthropods, are exposed to various blood-borne pathogens, including arboviruses. Consequently, their feeding behavior can readily transmit economically important viral pathogens to humans and animals. With this tightly knit vector and pathogen interaction, the replication and transmission of tick-borne viruses (TBVs) must be highly regulated by their respective tick vectors to avoid any adverse effect on the ticks' biological development and viability. Knowledge about the tick-virus interface, although gaining relevant advances in recent years, is advancing …

A randomized trial on the efficacy of a 2-month tube feeding regimen in anorexia nervosa: A 1-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Despite the high mortality rate in malnourished anorexia nervosa (AN) patients, very few trials have prospectively studied the efficacy of tube feeding. METHODS: This open prospective study was conducted in malnourished AN patients, who were randomized in tube feeding (n=41) or control (n=40) groups during a 2-month period. Thereafter, body weight, body mass gain, energy intake, eating behavior and relapse rates were compared during a 1-year follow-up, using paired Student t-test and ANOVA. RESULTS: At the end of the 2-months period, weight gain was 39% higher in the tube

Not just about food: attachments representations and maternal feeding practices in infancy.

The present study examined maternal attachment contributions on infant feeding behavior. Feeding is central for the development of the caregiver-infant relationship with lasting effects for children's health and self-regulation. Caregivers need to be attuned during feeding, so caregivers' attachment likely influences their feeding practices. While pregnant, 116 mothers were administered the Adult Attachment Interview. They completed an assessment of infant temperament at 6 weeks. At 8 months, mother-infant dyads were videotaped during feeding and mothers completed a depression assessment. Moth…
