Pathways linking parental divorce with adolescent depression.

This article examines the intervening pathways linking parental divorce with adolescent depression, using both cross-sectional and prospecti … ect pathway partly attributable to the greater vulnerability of youths in single-parent families to financial stresses. In contrast, family conflict did not account for the distress of youths in single-parent families, largely because of their immunity to the effects of such conflict. Finally, prospective data failed to support the hypothesis that differences betw …

METHODS: A validated Questionnaire on Pediatric Gastrointestinal Symptoms (QPGS) based on Rome IV criteria was used to identify and classify children presenting with abdominal pain. The children diagnosed as having FAPD were referred for psychological screening to evaluate for underlying psychosoci

The relationship between social adversity, micro-RNA expression and post-traumatic stress in a prospective, community-based cohort.

Epigenetics influence and are influenced by the impact of social and environmental challenges on biological outcomes. Therefore, pinpointing epigenetic factors associated with social adversity and traumatic stress enables understanding of the mechanisms underlying vulnerability and resilience. We hypothesized that micro-RNAs (miRNAs) expression may be associated with post-traumatic stress disorder symptom severity (i.e., PTSS) following exposure to social adversity. To test this hypothesis, we leveraged blood-derived RNA samples (n=632) and social adversity data from 483 unique participants in

Characterization of Stress in Low-Income, Inner-City Mothers of Children with Poorly Controlled Asthma.

The goal of this longitudinal analysis was to characterize factors associated with the experience of life stress in low-income, inner-city mothers of minority children with high-risk asthma.Participants (n = 276) reported on family demographics, child asthma control and healthcare utilization, social support, contemporary life difficulties (housing, finances, violence exposure) measured by the validated Crisis in Family Systems scale, and daily stress. Latent growth curve modeling examined predictors of life stress across 12 months as a function of home and community difficulties, asthma-speci

Sociodemographic predictors of postpartum post-traumatic stress symptoms-cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum psychological distress, including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PP-PTSD), poses serious risks for maternal and child well-being. The role of sociodemographic predictors remains less understood, particularly in Poland. METHODS: An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted among 273 Polish women. Sociodemographic and obstetric information was obtained using a self-designed online questionnaire. Symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress were measured using the DASS-21, and post-traumatic stress symptoms were assessed with the PTSD-8 scale. Multi

Financial Hardship and Unhealthy Lifestyles: Perspectives and Solutions From Breast Cancer Survivors and Their Care Teams.

IntroductionFinancial hardship may undermine healthy lifestyle behaviors that are important for preventing avoidable recurrence and death during survivorship after breast cancer diagnosis. Significant research has characterized these challenges and disparities, but relatively little research has identified which strategies patients and their teams may prefer to overcome these challenges. We employ an assets lens to highlight patient-identified strategies to circumvent barriers across Social-Ecological Model (SEM) levels.MethodsWe conducted a secondary qualitative analysis of semi-structured in

When the Bough Breaks: The Financial Burden of Childbirth and Postpartum Care by Insurance Type.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points This study examines exposure to out-of-pocket (OOP) costs related to childbirth and postpartum care for those with a Medicaid-insured birth compared with those with a commercially insured birth and subsequent financial outcomes at 12 months postpartum. We find that Medicaid is highly protective against health care costs for childbirth and postpartum care relative to commercial insurance, particularly for birthing people with low income. We find persistent medical debt and worry at 12 months postpartum for Medicaid recipients who reported OOP childbirth expenses. CONT

The associations among psychological distress, stressors of the COVID-19 pandemic, and disinhibited eating of parents of three- to five-year-old children.

Individuals' psychological distress is associated with disinhibited eating (external and emotional eating). The aim of the current study was to examine the moderating associations of COVID-19-related stress on parents' psychological distress (anxiety, hostility, depression) and external and emotional eating. One hundred and sixty U.S. parents of three- to five-year-old children (Mage = 34.08, SD = 6.76; 89 females) completed an online survey. After accounting for participant characteristics (i.e., age, BMI, sex), regression analyses showed that COVID-19 stress moderated the effects of anxiety,

Demographic-based risk of reporting psychopathology and poor health among mistreated older adults in the national elder mistreatment study wave II.

Objectives: Past year elder mistreatment rate is about 11% of community residing older adults, with significant demographic-based variations in prevalence. However, very little research on demographic variable-based differences in correlates of elder abuse, such as mental health, exist. The National Elder Mistreatment Study 8-year follow-up (NEMS II) specifically investigated the relation between demographic factors and the presence of these correlates (i.e. diagnoses of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and self-ratings of physical health).

Potential impact of the financial crisis on outpatient hospital visits due to otorhinolaryngologic disorders in Crete, Greece.

The public health effect of financial crises has been emphasized in previous studies. In addition, a series of otorhinolaryngologic disorders and manifestations has been related to psychological factors in the literature. Such conditions include temporomandibular joint disorders, laryngopharyngeal reflux, chronic tinnitus, and vertigo. Focusing on the outpatient database records of a large hospital in Crete, Greece, the objective of this retrospective study was to explore possible occurrence variations within the prementioned otorhinolaryngologic morbidity which may be potentially attributed t

Parenting adults who become homeless: variations in stress and social support.

This article focuses on the stressors of parenting an adult child who experiences homelessness. Parents whose adult children become homeless may provide support to this child, but they may also subsequently experience stress and require social support themselves. Findings from this study support the hypothesis that parents who spend more time or money helping their homeless adult offspring experience higher levels of stress. Results also show higher levels of stress among parents who helped with activities of daily living and among parents who worked to prevent harm involving their adult homel

Mechanical stress in plates for bridging reconstruction mandibular defects and purposes of double plate reinforcement.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the biomechanical performance of a commercially available bridging plate (2.4) as well as screws and bone simulating the reconstruction of hemimandibular defects and to indicate alternatives of reinforcement to prevent plate fractures either by strength or fatigue. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two common hemimandibular defects are investigated using computed finite element analysis (FEA) approach. Simplified and refined computational models are developed for the geometry of the screw. Conditions of non-locking and locking plate-screw interfaces are considered. Static loads of 12

Unconditional cash transfers and romantic relationship outcomes: A randomized controlled trial.

Couples living with low incomes in the United States experience greater relational distress relative to couples with more financial resources. Drawing from the family stress model, which argues that economic strain is a catalyst for relational distress, one approach to improve the relationships of couples with low incomes might be addressing and ameliorating families' financial difficulties. This study tested this possibility using secondary data from the Baby's First Years project, a randomized controlled trial of ongoing unconditional cash transfers to mothers. We examined the impact of rece

The impending financial healthcare burden and ethical dilemma of systemic therapy in metastatic cancer.

Metastatic cancer remains a devastating disease that threatens to disrupt entire family structures creating economic and psychosocial stress. Fortunately, great strides have resulted in improved therapies over the years but at a huge social-economic cost. The economic burden has risen greatly and carries with it new ethical concerns when deciding treatment. Here, we discuss the financial and ethical challenges that oncologists and their patients face in the era of novel treatment strategies. J. Surg. Oncol. 2016;114:323-328. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
