Assessing How a Transplant Hospitality House for Patients and Families Can Promote Wellbeing.

Patients and caregivers face increasingly complex and unique challenges when they travel to distant hospitals for transplant care. They can find themselves in a strange city managing hospital stays and outpatient appointments, requiring lodging, food, transportation, financial assistance, and emotional support. Those unable to overcome these logistical challenges may lose access to lifesaving treatment. Transplant specific hospitality houses have emerged to support patients who travel long distances from home to seek care, though little is known about the impact of such programs. Can a transpl

The effects of family configuration and support system failures during childhood and adolescence on college students' self-concepts and social skills.

This study examined the differential effects of familial configuration and support system failures in a sample of 256 college students. Regarding familial configuration, the results indicated that individuals who had experienced parental divorce were significantly more likely to have encountered parental hostility and/or lack of care, inadequate supervision when not in school, lack of concern by teachers, and more financial hardship. In turn, lower self-concepts and/or social skills were found to be associated with these kinds of life experiences (i.e., support system failures).

Maternal adversity and peripheral proinflammatory cytokine concentrations in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial stressors such as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and financial hardship have been linked to inflammatory phenotypes. Few studies have investigated the role of childhood and current stressors on inflammatory marker concentrations in pregnancy, a period marked by shifts in immune activity. This study examined the associations among ACEs, financial stress, and concentrations of three cytokines: TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-8 in pregnant people. Additionally, we explored whether current financial stress amplified relations between ACEs and immune activity, and, in contrast, w

Drivers of psychological distress among first year female public university students in South Africa: A qualitative exploratory study.

Existing literature, primarily from high-income countries, highlights the first year of higher education as a challenging period for students. Academic demands, family expectations, social pressures, and relational difficulties are commonly associated with increased psychological distress during this time. In South Africa, research is mostly quantitative, lacking qualitative insights into the nuanced drivers of distress among first-year students, particularly young, female, and Black-African students. We aimed to explore drivers of psychological distress among Black-African first-year female s

Patients' and caregivers' experiences of familial and social support in resource-poor settings: A systematically constructed review and meta-synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Familial and social support for patients with life-limiting conditions is crucial, especially in resource-poor settings. However, limited knowledge exists about patients' and caregivers' experiences within these informal networks in such contexts. AIMS: This systematic review aimed to (i) synthesise the experiences of patients and caregivers regarding familial and social support in resource-poor settings, and (ii) understand the challenges they face in order to provide evidence for more compassionate, culturally congruent palliative care.
