Recognising occupational PTSD as a statutory occupational disease: a step forward for emergency responders' mental health in China.

ABSTRACTThis commentary discusses China's recognition of occupational post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a statutory occupational disease, a landmark advancement in mental health support for emergency responders. The policy mandates legal protections, including access to diagnosis, treatment, and compensation, for workers affected by occupational trauma. However, the framework is currently limited to specific professions, such as police officers, healthcare workers, firefighters, and rescue personnel. Additionally, it requires documented trauma exposure during duty, which may exclude wor…

Exposure to aggression in three contexts of emergency response: A longitudinal examination of the relationship with psychological characteristics of the emergency responder.

Some emergency responders are more often exposed to workplace aggression than others. Victimological theories and previous studies suggest that characteristics of the target may predict exposure to workplace aggression. This paper examines the relationship between negative affect, hostile attribution, dominance, empathy, self-evaluations, and exposure to workplace aggression among emergency responders. Emergency medical workers, firefighters and police officers in the Netherlands filled in a survey during three measurement occasions (6 months apart). Results from the three occupational groups …

Preparation and Properties of Flexible Phenolic Silicone Hybrid Aerogels for Thermal Insulation.

In order to prepare flexible thermal protection aerogel materials, using dimethyldimethoxysilane (DMDMS) and methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) as co-precursors, isocyanate-propyltrimethoxysilane (CFS-006) was added to the co-precursor as a coupling agent, and resorcinol and formaldehyde were added to the sol solution to prepare a phenolic silicone hybrid aerogel (FAS) by the sol-gel method. The prepared FAS aerogel had no phase separation problem, the density was only 0.118 g/cm3, the hydrophobic angle reached 155.3°, and it had certain flexibility. It could be compressed to 70% and still be resto

Occupational deaths among healthcare workers.

Recent experiences with severe acute respiratory syndrome and the US smallpox vaccination program have demonstrated the vulnerability of healthcare workers to occupationally acquired infectious diseases. However, despite acknowledgment of risk, the occupational death rate for healthcare workers is unknown. In contrast, the death rate for other professions with occupational risk, such as police officer or firefighter, has been well defined. With available information from federal sources and calculating the additional number of deaths from infection by using data on prevalence and natural histo

A Multi-Pronged Approach to Shipyard Heat Stress Injury Prevention.

BACKGROUND: Heat stress injury (HSI) is an occupational hazard for industrial workers. For active-duty Sailors, shipyard conditions of high ambient temperatures, confined spaces, and increased fire-fighting training exacerbate those risks. This evidence-based practice project aimed to decrease Sailor HSI cases on a U.S. Navy ship undergoing multi-year shipyard maintenance after high numbers of HSI events over 5 months. METHODS: Three mitigation efforts augmented existing guidelines to decrease HSI rates among Sailors: (1) distribution of oral rehydration solution (ORS) and hydration protocol;

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Mediate the Association between Tobacco Smoking and Alcohol Use Disorder.

PURPOSE: Smoking is causally related to alcohol use disorder. Although polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are major neurotoxic pollutants in tobacco smoke, evidence is lacking on the role of PAHs in the relationship between smoking and alcohol use disorder. This study investigated the types of PAHs associated with smoking and whether exposure to those PAHs mediated the effect of smoking on alcohol use disorder. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 968 male firefighters were analyzed. Smoking history and cumulative pack-years were obtained using self-reported questionnaires. Alcohol use diso…

Exposure Risks and Potential Control Measures for a Fire Behavior Lab Training Structure: Part B. Chemical Gas Concentrations.

Firefighters' or instructors' exposure to airborne chemicals during live-fire training may depend on fuels being burned, fuel orientation and participants' location within the structure. This study was designed to evaluate the impact of different control measures on exposure risk to combustion byproducts during fire dynamics training where fuel packages are mounted at or near the ceiling. These measures included substitution of training fuels (low density wood fiberboard, oriented strand board (OSB), pallets, particle board, plywood) and adoption of engineering controls such as changing the lo…

The comprehensive transcriptomic profiling of RNA classes for biomonitoring and mechanistic studies.

The effects of various chemical compounds exposure on genetic material, including the risks of disease, are frequently evaluated by analyses of biomarkers. Among them, RNA markers play an important role in understanding the changes of transcriptomic processes. In this research we tested a new methodological approach of RNA libraries preparation in combination with sequencing to analyze the full transcriptome, including fragmented RNAs. Samples collected from firefighters at three time points were analyzed. A wide range of RNA types [non-coding RNAs (rRNA, tRNA, miRNA, snRNA, snoRNA, lncRNA, pi…

Cardiac arrest treated with a new automatic external defibrillator by out-of-hospital first responders.

Two hundred sixty patients in cardiac arrest were treated with an automatic external defibrillator by first-responding firefighters before arrival of paramedics. On average, first responders arrived 5 minutes before paramedics. Of 118 patients with ventricular fibrillation, 91 (77%) were administered shocks, 21 (23%) of whom had return of pulse and blood pressure by the time paramedics arrived. Fifty-six (62%) were admitted to the hospital and 30 (33%) survived. The survival rate for all 118 victims discovered with ventricular fibrillation was 27%. The device correctly classified the initial a…

Latent typologies of posttraumatic stress disorder amongst first responders: a comparison to combat veterans.

First responders and veterans are disproportionately affected by posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Findings from the extant literature s … l profiles compared to military personnel. Additionally, in comparison to law enforcement officers, firefighters were more likely to belong to the Cognitive Distress and Anhedonic Avoidant profiles. These findings may have important implications for how we treat PTSD in veterans and first responders.
