Distinct physiological and transcriptomic responses between tolerant and susceptible rapeseed (Brassica napus) germplasm to flooding stress.

Waterlogging and submergence are major abiotic stresses impairing rapeseed development and hence evaluation of submergence tolerance ability is crucial for the development of tolerant lines through breeding approaches. This study investigated submergence impact on the survival rate, physiological responses, and transcriptomic variation of the young seedlings of 706 Brassica napus germplasm. We identified 57 highly tolerant and 109 highly susceptible accessions underwent six days submergence. Most accessions originated from the downstream of Yangtze River region had higher tolerance level. SOD

Initial and residual benefits of soil amendments in reducing phosphorus release from soils with simulated snowmelt flooding.

In the Canadian prairies, spring snowmelt occurs rapidly and causes flooding in low-lying areas, inducing anaerobic soil conditions and exacerbating phosphorus (P) release to meltwater. Soil amendments can mitigate P loss from flooded soils soon after amendment application; however, their residual benefits are less understood. We examined the initial and residual benefits of alum (Al2(SO4)3·18H2O), gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), and Epsom salt (MgSO4·7H2O) in a simulated snowmelt flooding experiment. Intact soil columns were taken from amended and unamended field plots in the same year and 1 year after

Mapping Flood Co-Adaptation Strategies in a Vulnerable River Basin: Engaging Youth in Collaborative Decision-Making.

Climate change-induced flooding presents severe challenges to vulnerable catchments like the Tiram River Basin (TRB) in Johor, Malaysia, where historical data indicates an intensifying shift toward moderate and heavy rainfall events. This study evaluates the integration of high school students into flood co-adaptation mapping using structured, group-based co-creation activities. The intervention employed pre- and post-questionnaires, resilience presentations, and participatory mapping exercises to evaluate risk-zone identification and the prioritization of multi-sectoral adaptation strategies.

A review of early warning systems for storm-induced coastal flooding and erosion on wave-dominated open coasts.

Early warning systems for coastal erosion and flooding are currently primarily designed for local applications, offering high-resolution, site-specific predictions. Only a few early warning systems (EWS) are used at large regional or national scales. There is also a lack of standardised indicators and thresholds, which vary widely across systems and hinder cross-regional applicability. While current EWS perform well in binary hazard detection (Yes/No hazard; 80-95% accuracy), they struggle to accurately classify intermediate hazard levels. A lack of comprehensive field datasets has impeded rig

Exposed yet unmapped: evidence of differential flood exposure in deprived urban areas using citizen science.

BACKGROUND: Due to their immature immune system, neonates are at high risk of infection. This vulnerability when combined with limited resources and health education in developing countries can lead to sepsis, resulting in high global neonatal mortality rates. Many of these deaths are preventable. The BabyGel pilot trial tested the feasibility of conducting the main randomised trial, with the provision of alcohol handgel to postpartum mothers for prevention of neonatal infective morbidity in the rural community. This secondary analysis sought to evaluate the methods of detecting infections in

Climate change and flood susceptibility in Bocas del Toro, Panama: A multi-criteria spatial analysis approach.

Though Bocas del Toro province lies in the Panamanian Caribbean region regarded as "ground zero" in the global climate emergency, responses to frequent inland flooding remain reactive due to the lack of a comprehensive flood hazard map. This study integrated publicly available spatial data with elicitation from regionally-specific subject matter experts to map present and future flood prone zones in the province using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Weighted Sum tool, based on the shared socioeconomic pathways (SSP). Rainfall and temperature data were analyzed to predict future floo

Temperature and soil pollution affect dissolved and colloidal antimony release from flooded shooting range soils.

Antimony (Sb) mobility in soils, whether dissolved or colloidal, is an emerging concern, yet its geochemical behavior, particularly under future climatic conditions, remains poorly understood. In a 28-day microcosm experiment, we investigated Sb release from two shooting range soils under flooded conditions at 20°C and 25°C. Sequential extractions and pore water analyses were conducted to assess Sb release at different temperatures. Sb size distribution was examined across pore water filtrates and characterized using asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation (AF4). The soils had different level

Evaluating the influence of human activities on flood severity and its spatial heterogeneity across the Pearl River Delta.

With climate change and intensified human activities, disasters such as heavy rainfall, flooding, typhoons, and storm surges are becoming more frequent, posing significant threats to lives, property, and economic development. We propose a method combining extreme value theory and probability distribution to examine the flood severity under the effect of strong human activities. By focusing on the Pearl River Delta (PRD), as one of the most populated areas of China, we quantified changes in the severity of extreme water level for different return levels between 1966 and 1990 and 1991-2016 (with

Sociodemographic and housing factors for flood and mold damage in the Greater New Orleans Area after Hurricane Ida.

OBJECTIVE: As extreme weather events become more pervasive due to climate change, identifying populations with lower access to resources becomes critical for timely mitigation efforts. Here we analyzed data from a survey conducted in Louisiana after Hurricane Ida to investigate demographic and housing characteristics of those vulnerable to home damage, flooding, and mold exposure after an extreme weather event. METHODS: The survey participants comprised a convenience sample of 167 total respondents, most of whom resided in the Greater New Orleans Area. Sociodemographic, housing, and geographi

Influence of budget allocation and design rainfall intensity on cost-effective LID strategy for urban flood mitigation.

The use of combinations of low-impact development (LID) measures is more effective than the individual measures in mitigating runoff under different design storms. The runoff reduction rate (3R) of LID measures is mainly influenced by budget constraints and the intensity of design storms. These factors ultimately influence the determination of optimal combinations. In this study, a cost-effective approach was developed to determine the optimal LID combinations for maximizing the 3R under constrained construction budgets and design storms. The proposed approach was applied to 31 urbanized subca

Intensive flooding enhances methane but reduces carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions in reservoir drawdown areas.

Riparian ecosystems, vital interfaces for soil-atmosphere greenhouse gases (GHG) exchange, are increasingly subject to perturbations from extreme flooding events and artificial hydrological alterations. The resultant effects on soil microbiomes and GHG emissions, particularly under varying flooding regimes, remain poorly elucidated. Here, we conducted an in-situ flooding manipulation experiment across three elevation gradients in a reservoir drawdown area, applying continuous flooding (Extreme), 3-day flooding alternating with 3-day drainage (Moderate), and no flooding (Control) to evaluate re

Deep mobile profile control agent for iron-containing reservoirs prior to salinity-based ternary flooding.

To mitigate problems such as injection water channeling, abrupt water breakthrough, rapid decline in oil production accompanied by an abrupt rise in water cut, and poor mobilization of matrix oil that commonly arise in low-permeability fractured reservoirs after conventional water flooding, many Chinese oilfields have implemented chemical profile modification. However, the produced water used to prepare these chemicals contains high concentrations of divalent metal cations especially Fe2+ which dramatically reduce the gel viscosity and thus degrade the conformance control performance. To add

Flood risk assessment of the Garita River in the urban zone of San Luis Potosí City, by hydrodynamic modeling.

Rapid and uncontrolled urban growth and land use changes in watersheds worldwide have led to increased surface runoff within metropolitan areas, coupled with climate change, creating a risk for residents during the rainy season. The city of San Luis Potosí is no exception to this phenomenon. One affected watercourse is the Garita Stream, which flows inside the city near urbanization. It is essential to analyze the effects of urban sprawl on this stream based on historical precipitation data for the town. Hydrological and topographical information were required to conduct this research. The hyd

Response of underwater photosynthesis to light, CO2, temperature, and submergence time of Taxodium distichum, a flood-tolerant tree.

INTRODUCTION: Partial or complete submergence of trees can occur in natural wetlands during times of high waters, but the submergence events have increased in severity and frequency over the past decades. Taxodium distichum is well-known for its waterlogging tolerance, but there are also numerous observations of this species becoming partially or complete submerged for longer periods of time. Consequently, the aims of the present study were to characterize underwater net photosynthesis (PN) and leaf anatomy of T. distichum with time of submergence. METHODS: We completely submerged 6 months ol

Urban Flood Modeling and Risk Assessment with Limited Observation Data: The Beijing Future Science City of China.

The frequency of urban storms has increased, influenced by the climate changing and urbanization, and the process of urban rainfall runoff has also changed, leading to severe urban waterlogging problems. Against this background, the risk of urban waterlogging was analyzed and assessed accurately, using an urban stormwater model as necessary. Most studies have used urban hydrological models to assess flood risk; however, due to limited flow pipeline data, the calibration and the validation of the models are difficult. This study applied the MIKE URBAN model to build a drainage system model in t

Water and heat exchange responses to flooding and local storm events in the hyporheic zone driven by a meandering bend.

The hyporheic zone, i.e. the groundwater-surface water interface within riverine/riparian ecosystems, plays a key role in water transport, energy flow and biogeochemical cycling at watershed scales. Water and heat exchange are fundamental processes regulating biogeochemical cycles in the hyporheic zones. To improve the understanding of hyporheic flow and heat transport in meandering streams, high-resolution measurements of water level and temperature, combined with a 3-D coupled model of flow and heat transport in the hyporheic zone of a meandering bend, were carried out during a summer flood

Prior exposure of microbial communities to seawater reduces resilience but increases compositional and functional resistance to flooding events.

Storm surges, flooding, and the encroachment of seawater onto agricultural land are predicted to increase with climate change. These floodin … hemicellulose being preferentially utilised over cellulose, with the effect increasing with longer floods. These results suggest that changing bacterial physiology is more critical to understanding the impact of storm surges on agricultural systems than bulk community change.

Design for Storm Surge Flooding Adaptation: Facilitating Emergency Evacuation with Adaptive Landscape Form-Based Codes.

Lack of consensus and funding led to a focus on building retrofits after storm surge flooding and collective inaction for undertaking cross-jurisdictional adaptation pathways planning. Using Seabrook, TX, United States, as a test case, this paper demonstrates the feasibility of using design games (participatory community visioning and design processes) to develop consensus-based, performance-driven, form-based codes from an adaptive landscape framework to facilitate emergency evacuation during storm surge flooding. The framework provides bottom-up mechanisms to enhance the sizes, coverages, qu

Unveiling the impact of flooding and salinity on iron oxides-mediated binding of organic carbon in the rhizosphere of Scirpus mariqueter.

The abundant Fe (hydr-) oxides present in wetland sediments can form stable iron (Fe)-organic carbon (OC) complexes (Fe-OC), which are key mechanisms contributing to the stability of sedimentary OC stocks in coastal wetland ecosystems. However, the effects of increased flooding and salinity stress, resulting from global change, on the Fe-OC complexes in sediments remain unclear. In this study, we conducted controlled experiments in a climate chamber to quantify the impacts of flooding and salinity on the different forms of Fe (hydr-) oxides binding to OC in the rhizosphere sediments of S. mari

Rape straw biochar enhanced Cd immobilization in flooded paddy soil by promoting Fe and sulfur transformation.

Cd is normally associated with sulfide and Fe oxides in flooded paddy soil. The mechanisms of biochar enhanced Cd immobilization by promoting Fe transformation and sulfide formation are unclear. Rape straw biochar (RSB) pyrolyzed at 450 °C (LB) and 800 °C (HB) was added to Cd-contaminated paddy soil at 1% (LB1, HB1) and 2% (LB2, HB2) doses. The results showed that Fe/Mn oxide-Cd (Fe/Mn-Cd) and free Fe oxide (Fed) concentrations decreased in the first 12 days and then rose, while Fe2+ in pore water (W-Fe2+) tended to rise first and then fall. The electron transfer rate of soil in the HB2 treatm
