Experimentally induced canine toxocariasis: laboratory examinations and pathologic changes, with emphasis on the gastrointestinal tract.

Eght dogs were orally superinfected for 1 month with 50,000 embryonated Toxocara canis ova. Results of laboratory examinations during inoculation and for 2 weeks postinoculation revealed moderate leukocytosis, marked absolute eosinophilia, hypoalbuminemia, increased concentrations of serum glutamic pyruvate transaminase, and in 2 dogs, precipitating humoral antibodies. Other changes were moderate ascites, hepatomegaly, lymphadenopathy, and focal lesions (0.5 to 3.0 mm) in liver, lung, kidney, intestine, abdominal lymph node, heart, diaphragm, and spleen. Microscopically, focal eosinophilic gas

Tegumental alterations of adult Schistosoma japonicum harbored in mice treated with a single oral dose of mefloquine.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of mefloquine on the tegument of adult Schistosoma japonicum harbored in mice. METHODS: Twelve mice were each infected with 60-80 S. japonicum cercariae. At 35 days post-infection, 10 mice were treated orally with mefloquine at a single dose of 400 mg/kg. Two mice were sacrificed at 8 h, 24 h, 3 days, 7 days, and 14 days post-treatment respectively, and schistosomes were collected by the perfusion technique, fixed and examined under a scanning electron microscope. Schistosomes obtained from the remaining 2 untreated mice served as control. RESULTS: 8 h post-t

[Perioperative management of focal liver diseases by ofloxacin].

Perioperative use of ofloxacin for prophylaxis was investigated in 20 patients with focal hepatic formations (hemangioma, adenocarcinoma, echinococcosis). First dose of ofloxacin (200 mg) was given intravenously 15 min before operation. After operation ofloxacin was used intravenously (400 mg daily) for 5 days. Pharmacokinetic investigation demonstrated that perioperative intravenous use of ofloxacin provided concentrations in blood and hepatic tissue satisfactory for potential microflore inhibition. Immunological monitoring demonstrated positive dynamics on 5-7 days after operation. dynamics

Reflux nephropathy in kidney transplants, demonstrated by dimercaptosuccinic acid scanning.

BACKGROUND: This study determines why kidney transplants develop new focal defects. METHODS: Thirty children at a U.K. pediatric nephrology department receiving kidney transplants had early and late dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) scans to detect acquired focal defects, and their presence correlated with possible risk factors. Associations between clinical events and focal DMSA lesions appearing in grafts were measured. RESULTS: Of the 30 early DMSA scans (within 2 weeks of function), one child with a thrombosed polar artery had a focal defect. On rescanning later, 11 (37%) had acquired segme

[Four cases of Salmonella urinary tract infection].

Although gastroenteritis is the most common manifestation of salmonella infection in man, focal involvement of the urinary tract is not frequently encountered. For the last eight years we observed four cases of salmonella urinary tract infection. One case had ureterocele and the others had calculous diseases. All cases were treated with chemotherapy and surgical intervention. One patient died and the others were cured.

Epidemiology and clinical manifestations of visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis in Baringo District, Rift Valley, Kenya. A literature review.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), caused by Leishmania donovani, is endemic in Baringo District, Kenya. The disease has a focal distribution in the dry, hot areas below 1500 metres. Infections may be characterized as follows: 1) asymptomatic, 2) subclinical and self-limiting (not medically identifiable), and 3) clinically manifest disease (that is medically identifiable). Half of the reported VL patients are between 5 and 14 years of age and 66% of them are males. The reasons for the focal distribution and for the age and sex preference are discussed. Phlebotomus martini is the vector of the parasi

Immunopathologic differences of Sjögren's syndrome versus sicca syndrome in HCV and HIV infection.

A clinical picture of dry eye and dry mouth with the histological counterpart of focal lymphocytic sialoadenitis, usually detected in minor salivary glands, is considered the hallmark of Sjögren's syndrome. The association of sicca complaints and focal sialoadenitis can be also found in a number of other diseases, including some systemic viral infections. Among these conditions, chronic hepatitis C virus infection, associated with mixed cryoglobulinaemia and extra-hepatic manifestations, and HIV infection, particularly in the phase of diffuse interstitial lymphocytic infiltration, may mimic th

Serous retinal detachment in a patient with aplastic anemia associated with parvovirus B19 infection.

BACKGROUND: We report a case of unilateral serous retinal detachment (RD) associated with parvovirus B19 infection. CASE REPORT: A 28-year-old woman had a clinical history of autoimmune hemolytic anemia and pure red cell aplasia associated with parvovirus B19 infection. She demonstrated focal serous RD without retinal exudates. A focal cataract and anterior vitreous cells were also observed. Fluorescein angiography (FA) revealed accumulation of subretinal fluid, but no vascular leakage. After vitrectomy, the retina was re-attached and visual acuity returned to 20/20. Toxic shock syndrome associated with Staphylococcus aureus sinusitis in children.

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a severe, acute, multisystem illness associated with rash and shock. It is usually associated with a focal infection (e.g., during menstruation associated with tampon use, abscess, surgical wound infection) caused by certain Staphylococcus aureus strains. Identification and drainage of the focus of infection may be important in therapy. Occasionally, a focus of infection is not obvious, requiring additional diagnostic procedures. Three cases of children with TSS associated with sinusitis and no other focus of S. aureus infection are presented, demonstrating the im…

[Childhood cerebral vasculitis].

Central nervous system vasculitides are defined as the invasion of the vascular wall by blood-borne inflammatory cells. In childhood, they may be classified according to their trigger event (infectious vs. non-infectious), their temporal course (time-limited vs. chronic), and the size of the affected vessel. Diseases apparently confined to the central nervous system are also distinguished from secondary forms, associated with infection or rheumatic or systemic inflammatory disorders. Large-vessel vasculitis, the most frequent form, causes stroke and presents with acute focal deficits. MR, or m

Accuracy and safety of percutaneous US-guided needle biopsies in specific focal liver lesions: comparison of large and small needles in 1300 patients.

AIM: The aim of this study was to compare small size aspiration needles with large size cutting needles in focal liver lesions for using small needles instead of large ones without on-site cytopathologist. METHODS: Percutaneous ultrasonography-guided liver biopsy was evaluated retrospectively in a biopsy cohort study of 1300 patients. In this series, 690 patients were biopsied with large size (<19G) cutting needles and 610 with small size (20G) aspiration needles. On-site cytopathologist was not present in the biopsy-room at any intervention. Needles were compared for diagnostic accuracy and

Neuroimaging findings in children with retinopathy-confirmed cerebral malaria.

PURPOSE: To describe brain CT findings in retinopathy-confirmed, paediatric cerebral malaria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this outcomes study of paediatric cerebral malaria, a subset of children with protracted coma during initial presentation was scanned acutely. Survivors experiencing adverse neurological outcomes also underwent a head CT. All children had ophthalmological examination to confirm the presence of the retinopathy specific for cerebral malaria. Independent interpretation of CT images was provided by two neuroradiologists. RESULTS: Acute brain CT findings in three children includ

The pathogenesis of reflux nephropathy (chronic atrophic pyelonephritis).

The relationship between vesico-ureteric reflux and coarse renal scarring (atrophic pyelonephritis) has been studied in swine. Scars were observed to develop where reflux took place into the kidney substance via the renal papillae (intrarenal reflux). They were confined to these regions and were similar in size, distribution and other features peculiar to those found in the human from early childhood onwards. Intrarenal reflux was found to be related to the pressure within the urinary tract as well as to vesico-ureteric reflux. Infection was not an essential factor in scar-formation, but it ap

Lesions of experimental cysticercosis in domestic rabbits.

Rabbits were orally infected with Taenia pisiformis eggs and then serially killed. The development and regression of focal granulomatous lesions in the liver were observed, and these lesions were considered to be identical with the lesions in the naturally occurring disease. Focal granulomatous lesions containing onchospheres were also observed in the lungs, mesentery, and mesenteric lymph node. Thrombosis was present in some pulmonary arteries, and infarction of the lung was observed in 1 rabbit.

Clinical and laboratory characteristics of human brucellosis and predictors of focal involvement: a retrospective cohort study from Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a zoonotic infection with a wide clinical spectrum, ranging from nonspecific symptoms to severe focal involvement. Focal involvement significantly affects disease prognosis, yet early prediction remains challenging. Easily accessible inflammatory markers may provide a practical solution for early risk stratification. The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical and laboratory factors associated with focal involvement in brucellosis and to investigate the predictive value of inflammatory markers, particularly C-reactive protein (CRP) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte rat

Unisexual murine schistosomiasis: portal hepatitis in subacute infections.

Liver changes induced by unisexual male infection with S. mansoni were studied in mice during 2-20 weeks post-infection, in order to distinguish changes related to released worm substances from changes related to schistosome egg deposition. In subacute unisexual infection the venous wall appears as the target for inflammation which remains focal for a long time and affects limited segments of the main portal veins. Schistosomal pigment deposited in the lobule does not induce inflammatory or fibrogenic reactions.

Management of HIV-associated focal brain lesions in developing countries.

BACKGROUND: HIV-associated focal brain lesions (HFBL) are caused by opportunistic infections, neoplasms, or cerebrovascular diseases. In developed countries, toxoplasma encephalitis (TE) is the most frequent cause, followed by primary CNS lymphoma (PCNSL). Guidelines based on these causes however are poorly suited to developing countries, where treatable infections predominate as causes of HFBL. AIM: To determine a practical approach to the management of HFBL in developing countries. DESIGN: Case series. METHODS: Patients (n = 32) were managed based on presumed aetiologies of the focal brai
