A case is reported of a young woman with bulimia nervosa who presented with profound folate deficiency. This association has not been reported before despite the increased theoretical possibility. Initially she has responded well to folic acid therapy and social support.

OBJECTIVE: It is well known that female infertility is multifactorial. Therefore, we aimed to compare the effects of thyroid dysfunction, vitamin deficiency, and microelement deficiency in fertile and infertile patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between May 1st, 2017, and April 1st, 2019, we conducted a retrospective case-control study with of 380 infertile and 346 pregnant patients (who normally fertile and able to conceive spontaneously). The fertile patients were selected among those who got pregnant spontaneously without treatment, had a term birth, and did not have systemic or obstetric di

The aim of this article is to document the current dietary profile of pregnant women in rural areas of Delhi. In order to explore the diet the combination of quantitative (24-h recall method) and qualitative methods (food frequency method) were used. The mean intake of macronutrients and micronutrients, namely, iron, folic acid and Vitamin C which play an important role in the pathophysiology of nutritional anaemia during pregnancy was calculated from the foodstuffs, using Nutritive Value of Indian Foods. The preferences and avoidance of various foods by the pregnant women were also elicited.

The requirement of patients on maintenance hemodialysis for dietary supplements of folic acid is controversial. High levels of folate carry the risk of toxicity as well as being unnecessary. We followed a group of 41 patients, not receiving erythropoietin, for 16 months after the cessation of folate supplementation (5 mg/day). Diet supplied 60-80 g protein and 120-260 micrograms folic acid/day. Red cell folate levels decreased linearly from a mean of 1931 +/- 888 micrograms/l (+/- SD) to 676 +/- 294 micrograms/l after 6 months before levelling off at 455 +/- 222 micrograms/l after 9 months. Complex regulatory mechanisms control the expression of folate transporters within cells. Liver is the primary reserve of the folate stores within the body. As excessive alcohol consumption or inefficient dietary folate intake are known to create folate deficiency, so therefore the current study was designed to explore various regulatory mechanisms controlling the expression of folate transport in liver cells in conditions of ethanol exposure and folate deficiency. In order to see whether the effects mediated by the treatments are reversible or not, ethanol removal, and folate repletion was do

In cross-sectional studies, low levels of folate and B12 have been shown to be associated with cognitive decline and dementia Evidence for the putative role of folate, vitamin B12 in neurocognitive and other neurological functions comes from reported cases of severe vitamin deficiencies, particularly pernicious anemia, and homozygous defects in genes that encode for enzymes of one-carbon metabolism. The neurological alterations seen in these cases allow for a biological role of vitamins in neurophysiology. Results are quite controversial and there is an open debate in literature, considering t

Folate deficiency may be directly associated with carcinogenesis. Folate supplementation may reduce the risk of progression in a mucosa that is already genetically altered. The aim of the present study was to determine the role of folic acid in the treatment of mild and moderate laryngeal dysplasia recurring after surgery. The data obtained by laryngoscopy, measurement of serum folate levels and functional vocal assessment with the GIRBAS scale and VHI questionnaire were compared in patients who had received folic acid with a homogeneous group of patients with dysplasia who had not undergone a

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Folate deficiency is a public health problem and is the most notable for its association with neural tube defect in developing embryo, megaloblastic anaemia, cancers and cardiovascular diseases. The mechanisms of the intestinal folate uptake process have been earlier characterized. However, much less is known about regulation. In this study we evaluated the mechanistic insights of folate absorption in an in vivo model of folate deficiency.
METHODS: Male Wistar rats were fed folate-containing diet (2 mg/kg folic acid) or a folic acid-free diet over 3 months and folate

Folate deficiency has been associated with anemia and other adverse outcomes in pregnancy such as neural tube defects. The current recommendations for prevention of such outcomes are difficult to achieve through diet only, and folic acid supplementation and food fortification are feasible public health strategies. However, it is necessary to determine the usual diet and supplement use among women of reproductive age, including an accurate assessment of other dietary micronutrients. In addition to the beneficial effects observed in randomized clinical trials, health risks to the population have

The skin and mucosal changes in vitamin deficiency are described. Pellagra, which is the oldest known cutaneous manifestation among vitamin deficiencies, is reviewed. Cutaneous alterations caused by deficiency of the water-soluble vitamins B6, C, B1 and biotin, B12, folic acid, and riboflavin result in more mucosal alterations and are discussed. Alterations caused by fat-soluble vitamin deficiencies (vitamins A and K) are also considered.

Previous studies on the development of cleft lip, alveolus, palate, and velum and neural tube defects have revealed several shared multifactorial causes. Both anomalies emerge at different times during embryonic development and are not associated with each other unless there is a genetic component to the etiology. Vitamin deficiency disorders are one of several factors contributing to the etiology of these anomalies.Vitamins B6, folic acid and B12 play an essential role in the methylation cycle. A lack of or deficiency in these vitamins thus has severe consequences for the organism, especially

A twenty-one-year-old female known to suffer from bipolar type I disorder developed features of a pseudodementia. Following prompt initial response to treatment with antidepressants, there was an early recurrence of cognitive impairment. Blood investigations confirmed a macrocytic anaemia and vitamin B12 and folate deficiencies. There was dramatic resolution of cognitive impairment after vitamin replacement. This suggested the occurrence of a reversible nutritional dementia and reinforced the need to rule out secondary organic causes of psychiatric symptoms even in patients previously diagnose

Macrocytic and/or megaloblastic anaemias of infants and children are more often due to a defective bone marrow production than to haemolysis. They are mostly related to folate and/or cobalamin deficiency or to a disturbance in the metabolism of one of these vitamins (enzyme deficiencies or defect of synthesis of their active forms). More rarely, these anaemias are associated with congenital deficiency of the enzymes involved in pyrimidine or purine biosynthesis. A few cases of thiamine-responsive megaloblastic anaemia have been reported. Some blood diseases may also associated with macrocytic

The modulating influence of vitamin A deficiency on carcinogenesis induced by two potent carcinogens, diethylnitrosamine (DEN) and acetoxymethyl methylnitrosamine (AMMN), was studied in BALB/c mice. DEN was administered intragastrically every 30 days at a total dose of 200 mg/kg body weight, split into four doses. AMMN was applied continuously every 14 days on the tongue, at a dose of 2 mg/kg body weight. AMMN and DEN treated animals fed the vitamin A deficient diet had a significantly higher tumor incidence that mice fed the normal diet (p less than 0.05). Studies on the levels of vitamins A,
