Perspectives on COVID-19-related relief measures and experience of food insecurity among low-wage worker families in two US cities.

To explore how 2020-2022 federal COVID-19 relief measures impacted food security, economic hardship and housing stability, we interviewed low-income workers in Minneapolis, MN and Raleigh, NC. Participants were a subset of 40 from a larger study with at least one child. We identified themes including mechanisms of potential impact: food assistance, increased household cash, promoting housing stability, and reducing household expenses. No single measure ameliorated hardship. Participants reported healthier food behaviors. Flexible relief measures allowed people to spend according to their needs

Exploring the Association Between Food Insecurity, Bowel Health, and All-Cause Mortality in the United States: Insights from NHANES 2005-2010.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Functional gastrointestinal disorders such as chronic constipation (CC) and chronic diarrhea (CD) impose a significant burden on global healthcare resources. Food insecurity, a crucial social determinant of health, remains unclearly associated with CC and CD. We aim to explore the association between food insecurity and CC and CD, and its impact on all-cause mortality among participants with abnormal bowel health. METHODS: We used data from National Health and Nutrition Survey 2005-2010. We assessed food insecurity using the Household Food Security Survey Module, and bowel…

Association of food insecurity with suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in adults aged ≥50 years from low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to investigate associations between food insecurity with suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in adults aged ≥50 years from six low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: Cross-sectional, community-based data from the World Health Organisation's Study on Global Aging and Adult Health were analyzed. Self-reported information on past 12-month suicidal ideation and suicide attempts was collected. Past 12-month food insecurity was assessed with two questions on frequency of eating less and hunger due to lack of food. Multivariable logistic re…

The mediating role of food insecurity in the relationship between income poverty and depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation: A nationwide study of Korean adults.

BACKGROUND: Income poverty has been linked to poor mental health. Food insecurity, a consequence of poverty, has been identified as a determinant of mental health. We explored the mediating role of food insecurity in the relationship between income poverty and mental health problems. METHODS: This study utilized a nationally representative sample of 12,918 adults from the 2019-2021 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, among whom 3,896 were included in the depressive symptom analysis and 9,022 in the suicidal ideation analysis. Income poverty was defined as having a househol…

Assessing the impact of food insecurity on HIV medication adherence in the context of an integrated care programme for people living with HIV in Vancouver, Canada.

OBJECTIVE: Food insecurity, or self-reports of inadequate food access due to limited financial resources, remains prevalent among people living with HIV (PLHIV). We examined the impact of food insecurity on combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) adherence within an integrated care programme that provides services to PLHIV, including two meals per day. DESIGN: Adjusted OR (aOR) were estimated by generalized estimating equations, quantifying the relationship between food insecurity (exposure) and cART adherence (outcome) with multivariable logistic regression. SETTING: We drew on survey dat…

Food Insecurity as a Risk Factor for Outcomes Related to Ebola Virus Disease in Kono District, Sierra Leone: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Studies have shown that people suffering from food insecurity are at higher risk for infectious and noncommunicable diseases and have poorer health outcomes. No study, however, has examined the association between food insecurity and outcomes related to Ebola virus disease (EVD). We conducted a cross-sectional study in two Ebola-affected communities in Kono district, Sierra Leone, from November 2015 to September 2016. We enrolled persons who were determined to have been exposed to Ebola virus. We assessed the association of food insecurity, using an adapted version of the Household Food Insecu…

The World Health Organization - Community Empowerment Model in Addressing Food Insecurity in Low-Income African-American Women: A Review of the Literature.

Numerous researchers have examined the serious consequences of food insecurity and food deserts affecting the nutritional health of poor or low-income African-American women and their families. Food insecurity is defined as having limited or uncertain capacityfor acquiring sufficient, safe, and nutritious food at all times to meet one's dietary needs, while food deserts refer to economically and socially-deprived inner city areas with inadequate food supply that are often inhabited by low-income groups. Researchers have found that despite the capacity of community-level resources such as SNAP …

Iron deficiency is associated with food insecurity in pregnant females in the United States: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2010.

Food-insecure pregnant females may be at greater risk of iron deficiency (ID) because nutrition needs increase and more resources are needed to secure food during pregnancy. This may result in a higher risk of infant low birth weight and possibly cognitive impairment in the neonate. The relationships of food insecurity and poverty income ratio (PIR) with iron intake and ID among pregnant females in the United States were investigated using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2010 data (n=1,045). Food security status was classified using the US Food Security Survey Module. One…

Relative food abundance predicts greater binge-eating symptoms in subsequent hours among young adults experiencing food insecurity: Support for the "feast-or-famine" cycle hypothesis from an ecological momentary assessment study.

Food insecurity (FI) may increase risk for binge eating through a "feast-or-famine" cycle, where fluctuations in food availability correspond to alternating periods of food restriction and opportunities for binge eating, but research on this topic is limited. To clarify the relationship between food availability and binge eating in the context of FI, this study examined the association between momentary food security level and subsequent binge-eating symptoms among individuals in food-insecure households and investigated how this association differs by factors that may modify the extent to whi…

Understanding food insecurity and its relationship with health, psychosocial, and behavioral variables among the Latine population in the North Carolina High Country.

BACKGROUND: The Latine population is at least two times more likely to be food insecure compared to the non-Hispanic white population. Challenges in accessing sufficient, culturally preferred, and healthy foods, particularly for those in rural areas, include limited financial resources and transportation difficulties. Additionally, this population commonly has low enrollment in food assistance programs, an effective method in reducing food insecurity (FI). Obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and depression are frequently associated with FI; the Latine population carries a disprop…

Financial, housing, food, and healthcare insecurities and their independent and joint associations with depressive symptoms and stress in a U.S. cohort of adults with and without HIV.

Financial, housing, food, and healthcare insecurities are prevalent forms of material-need insecurity (MNI) in the U.S. that often co-occur, with significant consequences for health. We investigated how these MNIs overlap and relate jointly and independently to mental health among people with and without HIV enrolled in the MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS). Confirmatory bifactor analyses were used to examine how much unique variability remained in subfactors for financial, housing, food, and healthcare insecurities after accounting for common, underlying material hardship, described her

Position statement: the Society of Behavioral Medicine supports retaining funding for school meals to reduce hunger and food insecurity in American children.

Millions of children across the United States rely on school meals as a primary source of daily nutrition. Access to healthy meals improves diet quality, reduces hunger, and supports better attendance and academic performance. Recent federal actions, however, have threatened the reach and quality of these programs. Funding reductions have limited schools' ability to purchase fresh, locally sourced foods and have made universal free meals harder to provide. These changes disproportionately affect students from low-income and historically marginalized communities, increasing food insecurity, sti…

Food Insecurity Is Associated with the Quality of Diet of Non-Institutionalized Older Adults from a Southern Chilean Commune: A Cross-Sectional Study.

As the population ages, greater attention to age-related health problems related to diet and lifestyles is needed. Here, we sought to evaluate the associations between demographic and clinical characteristics and food insecurity with the quality of diet of non-institutionalized elderly from a southern Chilean commune. We performed an analytical cross-sectional study in a sample of 376 older adults. Nutritional status was evaluated through anthropometric measurements. Quality of diet was determined by the healthy eating index (HEI), obtained through the frequency of consumption questionnaire. S…

Impact of participation in Home-Delivered Meals on nutrient intake, dietary patterns, and food insecurity of older persons in New York state.

The aim of this study was to determine if (1) participation in Home-Delivered Meals (HDM) results in improved dietary patterns and nutrient intake, lower food insecurity, and reduced loss of weight; (2) subgroups of older persons are more likely to benefit; and (3) nutritional indicators of impact other than nutrient intake may be useful. The design used was quasi-experimental, with longitudinal assessment of individuals on HDM at baseline (before receipt of services), 6, and 12 months, and comparison to non-randomized group receiving other services. Outcomes included measured weight and heigh…

Food Insecurity and Positive Eating Disorder Screens Among US College Students: Disparities, Dose-Response, and Differential Item Functioning Across Multiple Survey Cohorts.

OBJECTIVE: Food insecurity (FI) is associated with eating-related psychopathology, but its dose-response relationship with eating disorder screening remains poorly characterized. This study examined this association across multiple cohorts of US college students, including its persistence after adjustment and variation across social identity groups. METHOD: Repeated cross-sectional data from the Healthy Minds Study were analyzed. FI worry was assessed as never/sometimes/often and eating disorder screening status using the SCOFF (≥ 2; SCOFF+). Dose-response analyses examined SCOFF+ across leve…
