Organoleptic study of deacidified and deodourised palm oil.

Deficiency of vitamin A has long been identified as a serious and preventable nutritional disorder, associated with increased risk of mortality and morbidity amongst children. The present study was conducted with the objectives (i) to perform organoleptic testing of food products cooked in Deacidified and Deodourised Palm Oil (DDPO), by sensory evaluation method and (ii) to compare the characteristics of these food products with the same products cooked in routinely used oil. Eleven commonly used weaning food items were prepared with routinely used oil (Group A). The same recipes were also pre

Aversion-preference patterns in amino acid- or protein-deficient rats: a comparison with previously reported responses to thiamin-deficient diets.

The purpose of the present experiments was to extend previous data on the strategy used by adult rats to select feed appropriately when faced with diets devoid of protein or an essential amino acid (EAA), and to compare this strategy with that used when facing vitamin (thiamin) deficiency. Rats fed on either balanced or deficient (EAA or protein) diets were offered a choice between a novel deficient and a familiar (deficient or corrected) diet and their choice was monitored. It was shown that protein- and EAA-deficient rats acquired an aversion for their corresponding familiar devoid diet, whi

Psychophysiological responses to food exposure: an experimental study in binge eaters.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate psychophysiological responses to food exposure in binge eaters. METHOD: Thirty female volunteers reporting regular binge attacks were compared with 30 nonbinge eaters. Subjects attended individually for the single laboratory session. Continuous measures of heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), electrodermal activity (EDA), and respiration rate were taken during rest and exposure to their favorite binge food. In addition, psychophysiological monitoring continued while subjects were allowed to eat after food exposure. Participants also

Aggressive behaviour in immature captive Nile crocodiles, Crocodylus niloticus, in relation to feeding.

This study presents five aspects of aggressive behaviour in juvenile Nile crocodiles, Crocodylus niloticus, as observed in five cohorts of 6-18 month-old animals. During this period, the animals grew from a range of 35-55 cm, to a range of 65-115 cm. 1) Stock density related to aggression: decrease in density resulted in significant decrease in the frequency of agonistic events, with 0.64 events/100 crocodiles/min observed in a density of 6.7 crocodiles/m2, compared to 0.26 events/100 crocodiles/min observed in a density of 4.7 crocodiles/m2. 2) Aggression during feeding: in all five groups, t

Psychobiological factors influencing physical activity and body composition in young adults: Chronotype and food addiction.

Chronotype and food addiction are key psychobiological factors related to physical activity, dietary patterns, and body composition in young adults. However, their combined associations with body structure remain insufficiently explored. This study aimed to holistically examine the relationships of chronotype and food addiction with physical activity and body composition among university students. A total of 582 participants (294 women, 288 men; M = 20.78 ± 2.69 y) were assessed using a cross-sectional design. Chronotype was measured with the Morningness - Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), food

Assessment of consumers' preference for orange-fleshed sweet potato puree chapati: a case of rural and urban consumers in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) is bio-fortified with vitamin A precursors through breeding and is thus ideal for combating vitamin A deficiency (VAD). One of the potential mechanisms to promote the consumption of OFSP is to enhance its availability through processing into products with a longer shelf life and more desirable to consumers. However, very few farmers and agro-processors practice value addition due to market uncertainties; there is little information on market availability for OFSP products. This study examined consumers' preference for OFSP puree chapati in rural a

Smell differential reactivity, but not taste differential reactivity, is related to food neophobia in toddlers.

Previous research has identified relationships between chemosensory reactivity and food neophobia in children. However, most studies have in … d and twenty-three toddlers aged from 20 to 22 months from the Opaline birth cohort (Observatory of Food Preferences in Infants and Children) were involved. A questionnaire was used to assess child's food neophobia. Toddlers' differential reactivity for smell (and for taste) was defined as the variability of behavioural responses over 8 odorants, and over the five …

Food, food choice and nutrition promotion in a remote Australian Aboriginal community.

Contemporary diets of Aboriginal people living in remote Australia are characterised by processed foods high in fat and sugar. Within the 'new' food system, evidence suggests many Aboriginal people understand food in their own terms but lack access to consumer information about store-purchased foods, and parents feel inadequate as role models. In a remote Australian Aboriginal community, purposive sampling identified adults who participated in semistructured interviews guided by food-based themes relating to the contemporary food system, parental guidance of children's food choice and channels

Activation in brain energy regulation and reward centers by food cues varies with choice of visual stimulus.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a non-invasive method of studying brain mechanisms involved in energy homeostasis and appetite regulation in humans by using visual food cues that are relevant to individuals attempting weight loss. DESIGN: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to compare brain activation in regions of interest between groups of food photographs. PARTICIPANTS: Ten healthy, non-obese women who were not dieting for weight loss. MEASUREMENTS: Independent raters viewed food photographs and evaluated whether the foods depicted should be eaten by individuals attempting a calo

Effects of L-arginine on angiotensin II-related water and salt intakes.

Nitric oxide (NO) has been implicated centrally as an inhibitory neuromodulator, acting in short feedback loops. Neurons capable of NO synthesis have been localized in various thirst-related hypothalamic nuclei. Intracerebroventricular (icv) injection of L-arginine (L-arg), the precursor for NO, has previously been shown to attenuate both dehydration- and angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced drinking behavior. The present study further examines the effects of L-arg on drinking. We confirmed that icv administration of L-arg (50 microg) reduced water intakes induced by both 24 h water deprivation and

Taste and smell abnormalities in advanced cancer: Negative impact on subjective food intake.

BACKGROUND: Taste and smell abnormalities (TSAs) are present in all cancer stages and may contribute to malnutrition. Despite this, they are rarely screened for. This study examined the prevalence and characteristics of TSAs and their influence on subjective food intake in advanced cancer. METHODS: Consecutive patients with advanced cancer were recruited. A modified Taste and Smell Survey assessed subjective TSAs. Objective TSAs were assessed with validated taste strips and "Sniffin Sticks." A six-item food intake questionnaire identified any effect TSAs had on food preferences/aversions. Nut…

What Are Adults With Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Eating? A Closer Look at the Dietary Habits of a Population-Based Canadian IBD Cohort.

BACKGROUND: A comprehensive study of what individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are eating that encompasses food avoidance, dietary sugar consumption, and a comparison with the non-IBD Canadian population has not been documented. The aim was to analyze these interrelated dietary components. METHODS: Food avoidance and sugar intake data were collected from 319 patients with IBD enrolled in the University of Manitoba IBD Cohort Study. Diets of those with IBD (n = 256) were compared with a matched, non-IBD Canadian cohort using the nutrition questions obtained from the Canadian Healt
