Recent advances in veterinary applications of structural vaccinology.

The deployment of effective veterinary vaccines has had a major impact on improving food security and consequently human health. Effective vaccines were essential for the global eradication of Rinderpest and the control and eradication of foot-and-mouth disease in some regions of the world. Effective vaccines also underpin the development of modern intensive food production systems such as poultry and aquaculture. However, for some high consequence diseases there are still significant challenges to develop effective vaccines. There is a strong track record in veterinary medicine of early adopt…

Sustainable agriculture intensification: An MCE model analysis of yam farmland suitability in Ghana.

Yam production is important in West Africa due to its contribution to food security, the economy, and increasing demand in international markets. Thus, recent statistics show that about 94% of global yam production is in the sub-region. However, current yam farming approaches are unsustainable and result in land degradation and deforestation. This study employs Multi-Criteria Evaluation (MCE) model in GIS to identify suitable sites for sustainable yam farming in Ghana, needed to minimize the environmental impacts of intensive production while maximizing yields to achieve food security. The mod…

Rhizosphere Microbiome-Mediated Drought Resilience in Cereals: Implications for Grain Nutrition, Yield, and Tolerance.

Drought-mediated declines in grain nutritional quality and cereal yield put global food security at risk, yet the rhizosphere microbiome provides an alternative solution for improving crop tolerance. Our review synthesised existing knowledge on how soil microbiomes, particularly arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), simultaneously regulate three interlinked pillars of crop performance (stress tolerance, grain nutrient uptake, and yield) under drought. Our in-depth analysis showed that such relationships were governed by synergies (improved root arc…

Exosome-Based Vaccines: Pros and Cons in the World of Animal Health.

Due to the emergence of antibiotic resistance and new and more complex diseases that affect livestock animal health and food security, the control of epidemics has become a top priority worldwide. Vaccination represents the most important and cost-effective measure to control infectious diseases in animal health, but it represents only 23% of the total global animal health market, highlighting the need to develop new vaccines. A recent strategy in animal health vaccination is the use of extracellular vesicles (EVs), lipid bilayer nanovesicles produced by almost all living cells, including both…

Biodiversity and genetic improvement of Moringa oleifera: traditional breeding and genome editing strategies for reducing anti-nutritional factors.

Rapid population growth demands research on alternative, nutritionally rich food crops that can sustain food security, mitigate cultivation risks associated with climate change, and reduce dependence on mono- and few-crop systems. Several underutilized crops have been cultivated for centuries, but their use often remains country- or continent-specific, with limited scientific documentation and dissemination to regions facing major nutritional challenges. Moringa is one such promising crop; with rich nutrients, its plant parts, from root to pod, are edible or useful, and it also contributes to …

Food insecurity and risk of cholera: A cross-sectional study and exploratory analysis of potential mediators.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity has been independently associated with developing cholera and there is an inverse relationship between national food security and annual cholera incidence. However, the factors that mediate the risk of cholera among food insecure households remain largely unexplored. METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In a cross-sectional survey of rural households in Haiti, we explored the role of food behaviors (i.e., dietary choices and food-handling practices) as mediators of cholera risk among food-insecure families. We generated a series of multivariable regression models to…
