Management of bilateral locked facets of the cervical spine.

A total of 28 cases of cervical spine dislocation with bilateral locking of facets treated between 1976 and 1984 were analyzed to determine whether treatment modality had any effect on outcome based on cord or root function. Motor vehicle accidents were responsible for 19 cases; the most common levels of dislocation were C-5, C-6 and C-6, C-7, with 10 each. Twenty patients were admitted with complete myelopathies. Ten patients whose dislocations were successfully reduced with traction had no neurological changes, but 1 reduced elsewhere deteriorated from a C-5 to C-2 level. Eleven of these pat

Advances in endoscopic lumbar spine surgery: a comprehensive review of the techniques used for the treatment of lumbar disc herniations and spinal stenosis and lumbar spinal fusion.

Endoscopic lumbar spine surgery has been practiced for decades but has recently gained popularity as a minimally invasive technique for treating the most common spinal pathologies treated by spine surgeons. These include lumbar disc herniations, spinal stenosis, and lumbar spinal fusion. This review provides comprehensive, up-to-date analyses of the 2 main approaches-uniportal and biportal endoscopy-utilized for discectomy, foraminotomy, laminectomy, and interbody fusion. The key advantages of endoscopic spine surgery include smaller incisions, less soft tissue disruption, reduced blood loss, …

Return to Martial Arts after Surgical Treatment of the Cervical Spine: Case Report and Systematic Review of the Literature for an Evidence-Based Approach.

Background: Cervical spine injuries are considered common in athlete populations, especially in those involved in high-contact sports. In some cases, surgical treatment can be necessary, and, therefore, return-to-play (RTP) after surgery represent a notable issue. Methods: We performed a systematic review of literature according to the PRISMA statement guidelines using the following search algorithm: (("ACDF") OR ("cervical spine surgery") OR ("neck surgery") OR ("cervical discectomy") OR ("foraminotomy") OR ("cervical disc replacement")) AND (("return to play") OR ("athlete") OR ("contact spo…

Three dimensional finite element analysis used to study the influence of the stress and strain of the operative and adjacent segments through different foraminnoplasty technique in the PELD: Study protocol clinical trial (SPIRIT Compliant).

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous endoscopic lumbar disectomy (PELD) is one of the most popular minimally invasive techniques of spinal surgery in recent years. At present, there are 2 main surgical approaches in PELD: foraminal approach and interlaminar approach. What's more, foraminoplasty is a necessary step for both approaches. However, there are few biomechanical studies on the formation of different parts of the intervertebral foramen. The aim of this study is to explore the effects of different foraminoplasty methods on the biomechanics of the corresponding and adjacent segments of the lumbar

Zero-Cycle: First Continuous, Unsupervised, At-Home Monitoring of Spinal Motion as a Per-Cycle Substrate for Machine Learning.

Continuous, objective records of spinal motion during ordinary life have not been available; assessment relies on intermittent questionnaires and brief supervised motion capture. A dual inertial-sensor garment applies the Zero-Cycle method, which organises the differential thorax-pelvis motion into movement cycles and emits one fixed-dimensional feature vector per cycle, using recurrent movement configurations as body-intrinsic anchors. In the implementation used for this study, the differential orientation is projected onto a horizontal plane at a nominal 50 cm scale, centred on a data-derive

A call to arms: the absence of standardized return to play guidelines for professional rugby union players after cervical spine surgery.

Cervical spine injuries in elite rugby union, while infrequent, carry a disproportionately high risk for players. The nature of collisions i … s undertaken are anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, cervical disc arthroplasty, and posterior foraminotomy. Each procedure has unique biomechanical implications for RTP. A consensus is that caution is urged in multilevel fusions, occipitocervical involvement, and injuries crossing the cervicothoracic junction due to loss of movement and increased strain …
