Pseudofolliculitis barbae, commonly referred to as "razor bumps" or "ingrown hairs," is a papular and pustular, foreign body inflammatory reaction that can affect any individual who has curly hair and who shaves. This condition is a particular nuisance to African-Americans. This report will discuss the causes of pseudofolliculitis barbae and present a systematic approach to treatment.

We report a patient with rupture of the ring extensor tendon associated with calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease of the wrist. Crystal deposits were noted in synovium and the triangular fibrocartilage complex. Histological examination revealed chronic synovitis with foreign body giant cell reaction to crystals. The cause of the tendon rupture was synovitis due to crystal deposition.

Porcine dermis was used for abdomino-vaginal urethroplasty in 53 women with urinary stress incontinence. The patients have been followed for periods ranging from 1.5 to 4 years; 47 of them were continent of urine both subjectively and on urodynamic testing. The postoperative complications were minimal and there has been no instance of foreign body reaction.

A 50-year-old man who has a heroin addict developed bilateral, symmetrical swelling of the breasts as a result of injecting himself directly into the breasts for several years. Results of histologic examination of the breast tissue showed granulomatous inflammation and a foreign body reaction without gynecomastia or tumor. Liver and endocrine functions were generally normal.

We describe the extremely unusual case of a childhood injury to the skull base presenting after many years, as a foreign body with chronic granulomatous infection of the brainstem, mimicking neoplasm. Bindii dermatitis is a distinctive eruption occurring in some Australian children during spring and early summer and characterized by discrete erythematous papules with puncta, concentrated over the palms, soles, and knees. In three affected individuals (but not in thirteen controls), pricking the skin with bindii seed produced an erythematous, indurated papule that appeared within 48 hours of intradermal pricking and simulated the primary lesion. Pathogenesis may involve an allergic reaction with a retained depot of antigen rather than a nonspecific foreign body injury reaction.

SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Discitis resulting from a foreign body has not been reported in the English-language literature.
METHOD: A case report is reviewed identifying the presence of this foreign object (titanium), erroneously implanted into the disc space at L5-S1. Imaging studies identify the location and surrounding reaction.

Soft tissue reactions to paraffin include inflammation, fibrosis, disfigurement, and granulomatous inflammation with foreign body giant cell reaction. The authors report the case of a 77-year-old woman with cutaneous marginal zone B cell lymphoma located on glabella, arising in association with underlying paraffinoma. While it is unclear whether the implant directly contributed to the development of lymphoma, this association has not been previously documented, prompting this report.

Intramural abscesses of the oesophagus resulting from nonpenetrating injuries of it with foreign bodies were observed by the authors in 12 of 377 patients. According to their data, 11 patients with small intramural abscesses showed good recovery after conservative treatment. One patient with an abscess occupying great part of the thoracic portion of the oesophagus was subjected to its resection with esophagoplasty which is considered to be the operation of choice in such situations.
