Infections caused by Fusarium species are increasing in frequency among immunocompromised hosts, but urinary tract infection (UTI) due to Fusarium proliferatum has not been reported in the literature so far. We describe a case of UTI caused by F. proliferatum in a 47-year-old man who was diagnosed with rectal cancer and metastasis. He underwent radical resection of rectal carcinoma and local resection of hepatic metastases. After the first adjuvant chemotherapy, the patient presented the obvious high fever, severely diarrhea and progressive decline of the white blood cell count. The direct mic…

In developing countries where systemic antifungal are often unavailable, treatment of filamentous fungi infection as Fusarium is sometimes very difficult to treat. We report the case of a keratomycosis due to Fusarium oxysporum treated by povidone iodine eye drops and oral fluconazole. The diagnosis of abscess in the cornea was retained after ophthalmological examination for a 28-year-old man with no previous ophthalmological disease, addressed to the Ophthalmological clinic at the University Hospital Le Dantec in Dakar for a left painful red eye with decreased visual acuity lasting for 15 day…

FgABC1 (FGSG_04580) is predicted to encode a pleiotropic drug resistance class ABC transporter in Fusarium graminearum, a globally important pathogen of wheat. Deletion mutants of FgABC1 showed reduced virulence towards wheat in crown and root infection assays but were unaltered in infectivity on barley. Expression of FgABC1 during head blight and crown rot disease increases during the necrotrophic phases of infection suggestive of a role for FgABC1 in late infection stages in different tissue types. Deletion of FgABC1 also led to increased sensitivity of the fungus to the antifungal compound …

A retrospective case report on the management of a 56-year-old man who was diagnosed with Fusarium keratitis with an associated iris fungal nodule. He presented with persistent right ocular pain, redness, photophobia and reduced vision following an injury six weeks earlier. Conservative management with topical antibiotics and intracameral injections was successfully used to treat a rare case of Fusarium keratitis with an associated fungal iris nodule. The patient had complete resolution of his vision. Therefore, conservative management of the fungal nodule is a successful therapy without the r…

Fusarium is a saprophytic organism that is widely found distributed in soil, subterranean and aerial plants, plant debris, and other organic substrates. It can cause local tissue infections in immunocompetent patients, such as onychomycosis, bone and joint infections, or sinusitis. The incidence of disseminated disease has notably increased since the initial cases of disseminated Fusarium were described, particularly affecting immunocompromised patients with hematologic malignancies. We report a 39-year-old man hospitalized with newly diagnosed acute myelocytic leukemia who developed dissemina…

We report the first case of disseminated fusariosis in an adult patient in Chile, with a hematologic neoplasia and chemotherapy that evolved with febrile prolonged neutropenia, refractory, treated with wide spectrum antibiotics and that developed a systemic infection with sinusal, cutaneous and pulmonary compromise by Fusarium oxysporum. He was refractory to antifungal treatment with amphotericin B deoxycholate and caspofungin that were administered in a sequential schedule. The fatal outcome of this patient was associated to persistent neutropenia and infection caused by a filamentous fungus …

Tracheoesophageal vocal prostheses (TVP) in laryngectomized patients commonly deteriorate due to overgrowth by yeasts, particularly Candida species. We describe the first case of colonization of such devices by a member of the Fusarium solani species complex in a patient with a history of glottal carcinoma. Three isolates, from three prostheses, were found morphologically consistent with the traditional picture of F. solani. Ribosomal sequence analysis showed that the isolates belonged to a distinct, as yet apparently unnamed phylogenetic species within the F. solani species complex. This spec…

Perforative eye injuries in two patients were complicated by fulminant endophthalmitis. In both patients the cornea was free of micro-organisms. Vitrectomy of the posterior pars plana was performed and the contents of the vitreous body were examined mycologically and bacteriologically. Fusarium moniliforme var. subglutinans and Pseudomonas species were isolated from both patients. Fungal and bacterial organisms penetrated the vitreous body via metal foreign bodies.

When cultivating Fusarium bulbigenum var. blasticola on the synthetic Rider media on the primary colonies tumour-like formations appear which are autonomous nondifferentiated cells. They display the resemblance with the real tumours in the following signs: differentiation, polymorphism, unlimited self-maintainance, aerobic glycolysis, etc. It is shown that under conditions of hypoxia, corresponding to the altitude of 2000-1000 m above sea-level the frequency of tumour-like formations decreases by 9-66% as compared to the cultivation conditions at pO2 of atmospheric air.

BACKGROUND: Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) offer a sustainable alternative for managing soilborne diseases, yet their field eff … to 6.62- and 5.36-fold increases, respectively. In pot trials, the formulation reduced the cucumber Fusarium wilt disease index from 73.33% to 20%. The WSBA treatment was associated with enhanced soil nutrient-cycling enzyme and plant antioxidant enzyme activities, altered rhizosphere microbial community structure, reduced the connectivity of FOC-associate …

Ambrosia beetles thrive on nutritionally barren xylem through obligate mutualisms with fungi that translocate and concentrate essential elements from wood. However, the nutritional physiology of most beetle-fungus systems and the molecular responses of the beetle host remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the Euwallacea interjectus-Fusarium populicola mutualism through an integrated approach combining fungal nutritional assays, insect developmental bioassays, and transcriptional profiling of the insulin/insulin-like signaling (IIS) pathway. F. Populicola exhibited pronounced metaboli…

INTRODUCTION: Invasive fungal infections caused by Fusarium and other rare hyalohyphomycetes, such as Scopulariopsis and Paecilomyces species, can lead to devastating localized and disseminated infections in vulnerable patient populations. Currently employed antifungal agents exhibit limited effectiveness for these molds. Over the past few years, the approval of new antifungals and the ongoing development of others in clinical trials offer promising new therapeutic options for treating these infections.

This study examined the interaction between Fusarium solani KMZW-1 and adult Bactrocera dorsalis, with emphasis on cuticular colonization, adult-stage pathological effects, and candidate metabolite-mediated toxicity. KMZW-1 showed Fusarium-like colony and conidial morphology and colonized mainly tarsal setae, joints, and recessed cuticular regions, where fungal conidia and hyphae progressively accumulated over time. Fungal treatment reduced adult survival in a concentration-dependent manner (P < 0.001) and lowered egg production per female, likely due to reduced male survival and fewer mating …

Herein, we report on Fusarium acuminatum as a potential postharvest phytopathogen of saladette tomato fruit (Solanum lycopersicum) and its ex situ control through hybrid films made of chitosan and Cymbopogon citratus essential oil. GC-MS analysis revealed that C. citratus essential oil contained geranial (38.7%), neral (36.9%), and beta-myrcene (11.3%) as major compounds with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 2.1 mg/mL against F. acuminatum. According to scanning electron microscopy and FT-IR tests, hybrid films made of chitosan and 1%-1.5% C. citratus essential oil exhibited a homogeneous…

Astragalus root rot is a soil-borne disease primarily caused by Fusarium spp., which severely hampers the sustainable development of the Astragalus industry. F. acuminatum is a predominant pathogen causing this disease. To elucidate the genetic variation and adaptive evolutionary characteristics of F. acuminatum from different geographical origins, this study conducted whole-genome resequencing analysis on 28 isolates of F. acuminatum collected from four major Astragalus production regions. Approximately 124.9 Gb of high-quality sequencing data were obtained, and a large number of single-nucle…

Fusarium crown rot (FCR) of wheat lacks sustainable control. We assembled a cross-kingdom synthetic microbial community (SMC) of Trichoderma harzianum T19 and five Bacillus strains and tested it in nonsterile soil challenged with Fusarium pseudograminearum. The SMC treatment significantly suppressed FCR, reducing the disease severity index by approximately 70%. Wheat growth and yield were simultaneously enhanced. In the rhizosphere, SMC improved soil health by elevating soil organic matter and nitrogen levels by over 50%, while mitigating pathogen-induced nutrient imbalances and boosting nutri…

Soil flooding is a well-documented agricultural practice for disease control, but the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of soil flooding on watermelon growth, soil chemical properties, enzyme activities, and the diversity and richness of microbial community structure, and to examine the relationships between these factors and wilt incidence. The results showed that soil flooding reduced the population of FON and Fusarium wilt incidence, promoted plant growth, increased soil AP and AK contents, increased UA and ALPA acti…

Fusarium species contribute to the development of onychomycosis, one of the most damaging nail diseases. This study aims to evaluate the anti-Fusarium potential of three agents: voriconazole (VRC), ciclopirox olamine (CPO), and thymol, across varied experimental methods, including standard Sabouraud medium, non-nutritive medium supplemented with horn powder, bovine horn slices, and human nail fragments. In the standard Sabouraud medium, 100% mycelial growth inhibition was achieved with VRC, CPO, and thymol at concentrations of 32 μg/mL, 64 μg/mL, and 250 μg/mL, respectively, corresponding to t…
