A rapid and safe method of roentgenographic evaluation of the acutely inflamed wall of the gallbladder, infusion tomography of the gallbladder, was performed 146 times, and the correlation with 67 subsequent cholecystectomies was reviewed. If the results of infusion tomogram of the gallbladder are abnormal, the gallbladder is diseased; if acute cholecystitis is present, the results of the examination will be abnormal in 96 per cent; if results of the infusion tomogram of the gallbladder are normal, the results are questionable, and oral cholecystography should be performed to evaluate the cond

To define the significance of nonvisualization of the gallbladder by ultrasonography, we studied follow-up data on 31 cases in which the gallbladder could not be identified despite adequate fasting. Thirty one cases of gallbladder disease included 15 cases of chronic cholecystitis due to cholelithiasis (13 cases) and choledocholithiasis (2 cases), 4 cases of cholelithiasis which were not surgerized, and 3 cases of cancer. There were 4 cases of diagnostic error in which gallbladder nonvisualization occurred despite a demonstrable lumen. The etiology of disease was not determined in the 5 remain

Gallbladder agenesis is a rare congenital anomaly occurring in 10-65 per 100,000 populations with the incidence being more common in females with a ratio of 3:1. Although asymptomatic, some patients present with symptoms like biliary colic and often indistinguishable from common conditions leading to unnecessary surgery. A 19-year old woman presented to the hospital with epigastric and right upper quadrant pain, other signs and symptoms consistent with biliary colic. However, on laparoscopy gall bladder was absent. Ultra-sound of the abdomen is the preferred for gallbladder diseases but due to…

Chronic inflammation of the gallbladder and the biliary tract due to infections are rare, compared to common cholelithiasis and acute biliary inflammation. This group of diseases includes, besides of chronic cholecystitis with cholelithiasis, also chronic gallbladder inflammation without stones, gallbladder hydrops and porcelain gallbladder. The most common form of chronic biliary tract infection is primary sclerosing cholangitis, while infection due to parasites like oriental cholangiohepatitis is very rare in Europe. Using imaging modalities like ultrasonography, computed tomography and magn

Suspensions of Escherichia coli bacteria were injected into the colon of ten mongrel dogs. Primarily, the cystic duct and the distal choledochal duct had been ligated. Choledochal bile was continuously collected with a ductal catheter. The bacteria could be cultured from the portal vein blood, the liver, and the gallbladder wall 5 h after injection, but not from choledochal or gallbladder bile. Suspensions of tritiated Escherichia coli bacteria were injected into the portal vein of another 20 mongrel dogs. Now the bacteria could be cultured from the liver, the gallbladder wall, the choledochal

Gallbladder cancer is an uncommon malignancy with an overall poor prognosis. The clinical and imaging presentation of gallbladder cancer often overlaps with benign disease, making diagnosis difficult. Gallbladder cancer is most easily diagnosed on imaging when it presents as a mass replacing the gallbladder. At this stage, the prognosis is usually poor. Recognizing the features of gallbladder cancer early in the disease can enable complete resection and improve prognosis. Recognition of the patterns of wall enhancement on computed tomography can help differentiate gallbladder cancer from benig

BACKGROUND: Benign gallbladder diseases have become a high-prevalence condition not only in China but also worldwide. The main types of benign gallbladder diseases include gallbladder polyps, acute and chronic cholecystitis, and gallstones, with gallstones being the most common, accounting for over 70% of cases. Although the mortality rate of benign gallbladder diseases is low, they carry obvious potential risks. Studies have shown that an increased incidence of benign gallbladder diseases can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and gallbladder cancer, resulting in a substantial disea…

Telocytes are closely associated with the regulation of tissue smooth muscle dynamics in digestive system disorders. They are widely distributed in the biliary system and exert their influence on biliary motility through mechanisms such as the regulation of CCK and their electrophysiological effects on smooth muscle cells. To investigate the relationship between telocytes and benign biliary diseases, such as gallbladder stone disease and biliary dilation syndrome, we conducted histopathological analysis on tissues affected by these conditions. Additionally, we performed immunohistochemistry and

Bile biochemical composition and serum hepatic samples were studied in patients with opisthorchiasis and non-parasitic diseases of the biliary tract. Opisthorchiasis was found to cause a much more significant reduction in the concentration of bile acid in the gallbladder. The specific features of the invasive disease manifested themselves in the maximum blood level of cholesterol with its less considerable increase in the cystic bile and with the least concentration of bilirubin in the gallbladder. Analysis in each group of the patients being examined reveals specific correlations between the

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Anomalous connection between the choledochus and pancreatic duct is considered to be a factor in the development of biliary tract diseases such as choledochal cyst, pancreatitis, cholangitis, gallbladder cancer, and bile duct cancer. Our purpose was analysis of combined disease, especially biliary neoplasm and evaluated microscopic changes of extrahepatic bile ducts.
METHODOLOGY: To study the clinical characteristics of anomalous pancreaticobiliary ductal union (APBDU), we reviewed 14 APBDU cases from June 1994 to June 1998. We studied the associated disease, surgical treatme

We report a case of localized primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) which was difficult to distinguish from gallbladder carcinoma. A 75-year-old woman with elevated serum bilirubin was hospitalized and underwent endoscopic nasobiliary drainage (ENBD). There was no history of diseases such as gallbladder stone, pancreatitis, or ulcerative colitis. Cholangiography through the ENBD tube showed localized stenosis of the common bile duct; the gallbladder could not be seen. Angiography showed no encasement of the hepatic artery. Ultrasonography showed a tumor in the cystic duct, and the tumor had inv

INTRODUCTION: Adenoma and intra-adenoma carcinoma of the gallbladder are relatively rare diseases, and the World Health Organization classification reports a frequency of 0.3% for gallbladder adenomas. Precise preoperative diagnosis of gallbladder cancer, especially in the early stages, is challenging. Herein, we report a case of pyloric adenomatous carcinoma of the gallbladder, diagnosed by laparoscopic cholecystectomy and pathology, along with a literature review. This case was reported in accordance with the SCARE 2020 Guideline (Ref).
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 62-year-old woman was diagnose

Sonographic identification of thickening of the gallbladder wall that consists of multiple striations (alternate hypoechoic and hyperechoic layers) has been considered strong evidence of the presence of acute cholecystitis. We studied 27 patients in whom sonograms showed striated thickening of the gallbladder wall to determine the diagnostic significance of this finding. Striations were classified as focal or diffuse. Sonograms were correlated with pathologic findings in 16 patients and with clinical diagnoses and laboratory findings in 11. Patients were categorized as having cholecystitis wit

Gallbladder volvulus is defined as the rotation of the gallbladder on its mesentery along the axis of the cystic duct and cystic artery. The presence of a redundant mesentery (floating gallbladder) is a prerequisite for volvulus. The disease, described for the first time by Wendel in 1898, is an extremely rare surgical disease. The disease mimics acute cholecystitis symptoms. Because of these two conditions, preoperative diagnosis of the disease is difficult. In any case, the definitive diagnosis is made during surgery. Volvulus of the gallbladder is an acute surgical emergency that must be tr

Benign disease of the gallbladder is common and frequently treated by surgical removal of the gallbladder. Today, cholecystectomy is the most common operation performed by general surgeons, and the majority are done via minimally invasive techniques. However, during the early history of the surgical management of gallbladder disease, cholecystectomy was seldom performed due to perceived risks. We present a historical review of the management of benign gallbladder disease, delineating 4 distinct phases of the surgical approach to the disease. The management of benign gallbladder disease has dra

INTRODUCTION: Ayurveda describes using desiccated and well-processed gallbladder of Indian carp (Labeorohita) as a traditional remedy for some diseases. People consume it irrationally following the hearsay advice for all types of chronic diseases.
METHODS: Here we report 30 sporadic cases of acute kidney injury (AKI) following ingestion of raw gallbladder of Indian carp during 1975-2018 (44 years).
RESULTS: Most of the victims were males (83.3%) with an average age of 37.7 years. The mean onset of symptoms was 2 to 12 hours after ingestion. All patients presented as acute gastroenteritis and

Obesity has become a major medical and public health problem worldwide. Recent studies have shown that obesity is a chronic disease that is associated with many diseases, such as gallstone disease, acute pancreatitis, fatty liver, and digestive cancer. Obesity is also a risk factor for the formation of cholesterol gallstones. Clinical and epidemiological studies have suggested that obesity is positively associated with the risk of gallbladder cancer. Obesity may modulate the lipid and endogenous hormones metabolism, affect gallbladder motility, increase the risk of gallstones, and increased th

Although stone disease is by far the most commonly encountered pathology of the gallbladder, there are several other important disease processes affecting it. These include adenomyomatosis, cholesterolosis, polyps, porcelain gallbladder, acalculous cholecystitis, xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis, emphysematous cholecystitis, gallbladder cancer, and gallbladder hemorrhage. The purpose of this article was to review the different gallbladder pathologies encountered in everyday radiological practice and to describe their features in the standard imaging modalities.
