BACKGROUND: Hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) is a potentially deadly gas that naturally occurs in petroleum and natural gas. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration cites H2 S as a leading cause of workplace gas inhalation deaths. Mass casualties of H2 S toxicity may be caused by exposure from industrial accidents or release from oil field sites. H2 S is also an attractive terrorism tool because of its high toxicity and ease with which it can be produced. Several potential antidotes have been proposed for hydrogen sulfide poisoning but none have been completely successful.

This paper summarizes and analyzes the clinical data of a patient with Occupational hydrogen sulfide poisoning admitted to our hospital on March 4, 2023. On the morning of March 2, 2023, the patient worked at an environmental energy company (waste treatment plant) in Shandong Province for the first time, The job was to flush the sludge from the walls of the sludge treatment tank (anaerobic tank) with a water gun, which can release hydrogen sulfide gas. When the patient was about to start work after entering the tank for about 1 min, he suddenly smelled a harsh and pungent odor, felt dizzy and

(1) Background: Benzene, toluene, and xylene isomers (BTX) are present in gasoline. Exposure to benzene may lead to the appearance of a series of signs, symptoms, and complications, which are characterized by benzene poisoning, which is an occupational disease. This study evaluated the presence of signs and symptoms related to occupational exposure and whether occupational exposure to BTX is associated with the development of hematological changes. (2) Material and Methods: This cross-sectional epidemiological study included 542 participants, in which 324 were gas station workers (GSWs) and 21

Naphthalene poisoning is a rare but potentially life-threatening cause of haemolysis and methaemoglobinaemia due to severe oxidative stress. We report a case of a previously healthy man in his 30s who presented at the emergency department with scleral icterus, peripheral oxygen saturation of 85% on pulse oximetry, haemoglobinuria and chocolate-coloured blood following the accidental ingestion of a 'white air freshener ball'. Arterial blood gas analysis revealed elevated methaemoglobin (MetHb) levels. Laboratory results showed severe haemolysis. Bedside solubility and flotation tests on the whi

Phosgene (COCl2) gas is a chemical intermediate of high-volume production with numerous industrial applications worldwide. Due to its high toxicity, accidental exposure to phosgene leads to various chemical injuries, primarily resulting in chemical-induced lung injury due to inhalation. Initially, the illness is mild and presents as coughing, chest tightness, and wheezing; however, within a few hours, symptoms progress to chronic respiratory depression, refractory pulmonary edema, dyspnea, and hypoxemia, which may contribute to acute respiratory distress syndrome or even death in severe cases.

Aluminum phosphide is a common suicidal agent in an agrarian country like India. Toxicity is mostly due to the liberation of phosphine gas, which non-competitively inhibits cytochrome oxidase in the mitochondria causing cell hypoxia. It can involve almost any organ in the body, but the most common is cardiovascular system. Various cardiovascular manifestations are hypotension, myocarditis, pericarditis, congestive heart failure, various ECG changes like myocardial infarction, conduction abnormalities, various arrhythmias, and very rarely unmasking of the Brugada pattern. Here we are presenting

In our institutes, we perform a quantitative evaluation of volatile hydrocarbons in post-mortem blood in all fatal fire-related cases using headspace gas chromatography mass spectrometry. We previously reported that benzene concentrations in the blood were positively correlated with carbon monoxide-hemoglobin (CO-Hb) concentrations in fire-related deaths. Here, we present 3 cases in which benzene concentrations in the blood were not correlated with CO-Hb concentrations. A high CO-Hb concentration without a hydrocarbon component, such as benzene, indicates that the deceased inhaled carbon monox

Clostridia can cause unique histotoxic syndromes produced by specific toxins (e.g., gas gangrene and food poisoning) as well as non-syndromic infections (e.g., abscess, local infections, and blood born infection). Clostridia can also be recovered from various body sites as part of polymicrobial aerobic-anaerobic infection. These include intra-abdominal (peritonitis and abscess), biliary tract, female genital tract, abscess (rectal area and oropharyngeal), pleuropulmonary, central nervous system, and skin and soft-tissue infections. Clostridia were recovered from children with bacteremia of gas

We often have cases of insecticide poisoning where the patient is unconscious and the causal substances are unknown. We report an 83-year-old unconscious man who had apparently ingested several agricultural chemicals, possibly organophosphate or carbamate. According to his family, there were three kinds of containers of agricultural chemicals with their caps opened around him. When he was transferred to our hospital, he presented hypertension, hypersalivation, and muscle fasciculation. His pupils were markedly miotic. In order to identify the substances ingested we used a gas chromatographymas

A case of fatal intoxication of an 8 year old child due to accidental oral ingestion of morphine is presented. Following a tonsillectomy and release from the hospital the decedent was prescribed meperidine syrup 50 mg per teaspoon (tsp) to be taken 2 tsps every 4 h. A pharmacist when filling her prescription mistakenly dispensed Roxanol which contained 20 mg/ml morphine sulfate. She took 1 or 2 tsp of the prescription prior to bed and was found dead the next morning. Autopsy findings were unremarkable. Quantitation by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) yielded the following morphine

Placing a nasogastric tube can be a life-saving act for a horse but is considered an occupational hazard for veterinarians. An online questionnaire was performed to assess and specify potential risks. 123 equine veterinarians completed the survey, and the majority admitted using the mouth to handle the end of the nasogastric tube (sucking or blowing air) and having accidentally swallowed or aspirated stomach content or medications. This can potentially lead to aspiration pneumonia or pneumonitis. Mineral oil seems to be especially dangerous as aspiration may be asymptomatic at the beginning an

Activated carbon (AC) adsorption has long been considered to be a readily available technology for providing protection against exposure to acutely toxic gases. However, ACs without chemical impregnation have proven to be much less efficient than impregnated ACs in terms of gas removal. The impregnated ACs in current use are usually modified with metalloid impregnation agents (ASC-carbons; copper, chromium, or silver) to simultaneously enhance the chemical and physical properties of the ACs in removing specific poisonous gases. These metalloid agents, however, can cause acute poisoning to both

INTRODUCTION: Snakebites are acute systemic toxic diseases caused by snake venom entering the body through wounds. Failure to use antivenom immediately and difficulty in obtaining antivenoms are frequently responsible for worsening disease. Traditional Chinese medicine is commonly used to supplement and replace antivenom in treating snakebites. The Jidesheng snake pill (JDS) is a widely used traditional Chinese medicine that has achieved good clinical therapeutic effects; however, its mechanism remains unclear. Therefore, metabolomics techniques were employed to explore the pathophysiological

Catalytic destruction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) combined with dust removal technique has attracted much attention, yet the application in the solid waste incineration air pollution control process is still lacking due to the complex flue gas atmosphere. In this work, the Mn-Ce-Co-Ox catalyst-coated polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) filter fiber with efficient dust removal and low-temperature polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) destruction has been prepared with a redox-precipitation method. The catalyst was uniformly grown around the PPS fiber with appropriat

We describe a case of suicidal asphyxiation using a plastic bag combined with carbon dioxide (CO2) gas. A 20-year-old male, whose head was covered with a plastic bag, was found dead in his room. In the plastic bag, there were two glass-made cups containing liquid-like substance. Through crime scene investigation by police staffs, a bottle of citric acid and a box of baking soda were also discovered in his room. The forensic autopsy revealed that there were neither lesions nor injuries in all of the organs. Moreover, any drugs and poisons could not be detected in blood samples. Based on autopsy

A sensor with high sensitivity and response rate is still lacking in the detection of poisonous and volatile chemicals. Here, we report a highly sensitive nanoporous fluorescence sensor based on core@shell upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) for the detection of dichloromethane. UCNPs were deposited on porous anodic alumina oxide (AAO) templates supported by glass slides to form a thin film-like gas sensor in which UCNPs with active shells exhibit intense background-free fluorescence and simultaneously high optical sensitivity, while an AAO template acts as a porous substrate for UCNPs to incre

BACKGROUND: Run Rat® is a rodenticide widely used against small mammals. It comprises of a minimum of 32% zinc phosphide which is highly toxic in acute exposures to humans. It may be consumed accidentally or intentionally. It enters the body via skin, respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. Zinc phosphide is hydrolyzed by the gastric acid and is transformed into phosphine gas. Phosphine is a respiratory toxin that inhibits cytochrome C oxidase system resulting in renal failure and liver failure.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 35 year old Sri Lankan female presented following ingestion of 2.5 g of Run
