BACKGROUND: Loneliness is recognized by the World Health Organization as a major global public health concern, with well-documented consequences for mental and physical health. Yet it remains under-prioritized in public health programs, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In rural India, intersecting vulnerabilities-caste, gender, and widowhood-exacerbate risks of social isolation and loneliness in later life. Despite commitments under the National Programme for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE), validated screening tools are lacking in primary care.
OBJECTIVE: To evalu

BACKGROUND: Data on the potential protective effect of psychological safety (PS) on well-being and satisfaction among physicians are lacking.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine (1) prevalence of PS; (2) relationship between PS, burnout, and intent to leave one's job (ILJ); and (3) demographic and occupational factors associated with PS within our physician faculty.
DESIGN: Participants: An institution-wide survey was sent to all faculty within our eight-hospital health system, between July and September 2022.
MAIN MEASURES: PS was assessed using the seven-item Fearless Organization Questionnai

BACKGROUND: Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is the most common form of childhood inflammatory arthritis. The disease burden of JIA is substantial as patients require specialized medical practitioners for diagnosis and chronic treatments that are both costly and time intensive. Discrepancies in access to care due to health inequities such as socioeconomic status or geographic location may lead to vastly different health outcomes. As research informs advances in care, is important to consider inclusion and diversity in JIA research.
METHODS: We reviewed and synthesized randomized controlled

Vaccination is a cornerstone of public health and a critical enabler of universal health coverage, yet Ethiopia's immunization system remains largely oriented toward early childhood. Although childhood coverage for key antigens has improved substantially, recent evidence shows persistent zero-dose and under-immunization among children, uneven uptake of vaccines for adolescents, pregnant women, adults, and older adults, and missed opportunities even among populations living near health facilities. Life course immunization (LCI), defined by Immunization Agenda 2030 as vaccination across all ages

Sexual harassment (SH) in academia constitutes a pervasive form of gender-based violence that undermines individual well-being and academic equity. While existing research has largely investigated risk factors, less attention has been paid to protective factors, coping strategies, and the cumulative burden generated by the reporting process itself. This qualitative study explores how victims of SH in Italian universities mobilize resources when disclosing their experiences informally to peers and colleagues or formally through institutional channels and how this process generates extra-fatigue

BACKGROUND: This scoping review maps the key findings of intersectional research related to the COVID-19 pandemic in North America. Intersectional approaches highlight how overlapping systems of oppression shape health and social outcomes.
METHODS: A total of 21 studies were included, comprising 10 quantitative, 8 qualitative, and 3 mixed-methods designs. Studies were reviewed to assess the use of intersectional research methods and to identify common findings across the literature.
RESULTS: Intersectional research methods are increasingly utilized in pandemic-related studies in North Americ

Social determinants of health influence patient outcomes across all otolaryngology specialties, necessitating collaborative efforts among healthcare teams to promote health equity. Health disparities permeate healthcare, creating inequities related to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, environment, access to healthcare, education, gender, and sexual orientation. These disparities impact the diagnosis, management, and outcomes of conditions such as chronic otitis media, obstructive sleep apnea, sinusitis and allergies, hearing and balance disorders, head and neck cancer, and laryngeal or ai

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite the proven efficacy of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP), global coverage remains far below targets, with the greatest gaps among key and underserved populations. This review is timely as it highlights how inequitable access undermines progress toward ending AIDS by 2030 and introduces the "O for KP" framework - a preferential option for key populations and the underserved . This equity-focused principle redefines program success by how well services reach and sustain those most structurally excluded.
RECENT FINDINGS: We synthesized evidence on persistent barriers face

Since menstrual health and menstrual inequity are determined by social power structures, this study proposes to analyse, from an intersectional perspective, the experiences of menstrual inequity of women and people who menstruate (PWM) (≥18 years) under circumstances of socioeconomic vulnerability in an urban and rural setting in Catalonia (Spain), focusing on menstrual poverty, menstrual management and access to health care for menstrual health. An exploratory and interpretative qualitative study was conducted. Venue-based convenience sampling was carried out, recruiting women from a non-gove

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell disorder accounting for approximately 10% of hematologic malignancies. There is limited epidemiological evidence regarding the long-term trends and disparities in MM in the US. We conducted a multiple time point cross-sectional study using MM incidence rate data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and mortality data from the CDC Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC WONDER) Underlying Cause of Death database between 1999 and 2020. During this period, MM incidence has steadily increased, while MM mortalit

OBJECTIVE: To explore the perspectives of patients and healthcare researchers on their participation in clinical studies, in order to identify barriers and propose actions that promote more active, informed and equitable participation.
METHOD: Qualitative study with a phenomenological approach, based on a focus group technique. The session included five patients with experience in clinical trials and two oncology researchers. It was audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed through thematic coding in three phases (open, axial and selective), following COREQ quality standards.

Bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a defining global health crisis, projected to cause 1.91 million annual deaths globally by 2050. These alarming statistics call for a holistic, dual-lens approach that examines the molecular strategies bacteria use to develop antibiotic resistance, as well as the socio-economic drivers and structural inequities that remain critically overlooked in AMR governance. This review delves into two seemingly unrelated but critical aspects of bacterial AMR: biological mechanisms of bacterial resistance and the social norms and structural inequities that play

Despite advances in reproductive medicine, a widely acceptable male contraceptive method is still lacking, leaving the burden of birth control largely on women. As a result, female-centric methods continue to dominate global contraceptive trends, as male options are limited to condoms and vasectomy, both of which are constrained by issues related to reliability, reversibility, or social acceptability. Adoption of novel methods in this regard remains low as well due to social perceptions, myths surrounding masculinity, and concerns regarding side effects. This study was conducted as a narrative

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common malignancy in women of reproductive age globally. The burden of this disease is highest in low-income and middle-income countries, especially among women living with HIV. In 2018, WHO launched a global strategy to accelerate cervical cancer elimination through rapid scale-up of prophylactic vaccination, cervical screening, and treatment of precancers and cancers. This initiative was key in raising a call for action to address the stark global disparities in cervical cancer burden. However, achieving elimination of cervical cancer among women with HIV r

BACKGROUND: The BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT) forms part of the undergraduate medical admission process at the University of Cambridge. The fairness of admissions tests is an important issue.
AIMS: Aims were to investigate the relationships between applicants' background variables and BMAT scores, whether they were offered a place or rejected and, for those admitted, performance on the first year course examinations.
METHOD: Multilevel regression models were employed with data from three combined applicant cohorts. Admission rates for different groups were investigated with and without c

OBJECTIVES: To examine trends in disability prevalence by sex and province in South Africa between 2020 and 2024, and to test whether the reported gender gap and changes in healthcare access indicators are consistent with genuine population characteristics rather than sampling variation.
METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional trend analysis was conducted using five consecutive General Household Survey (GHS) statistical releases (2020-2024). Disability was measured using the Washington Group Short Set. Because the releases report population counts alongside percentages, two-proportion z-tests
