The Wheat Seed Microbiome as a Model for Understanding the Transmission of Beneficial Plant-Associated Bacteria.

Beneficial plant-microbe interactions are fundamental to plant nutrition, growth, stress tolerance and disease resistance. However, because microorganisms are not encoded by the plant genome, the mechanisms by which microbial associations persist across generations remain unresolved. In this review, we examine the emerging evidence that seeds function not only as reproductive structures but also as reservoirs of microorganisms that may facilitate the maintenance and transmission of selected microbial partners. We synthesize current knowledge of seed microbiome diversity, ecological functions a

Phytochemical Characterization and Gut Microbiota Modulation by Berry Cactus Juice Concentrate in a High-Fat Diet-Induced Metabolic Syndrome Rat Model.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a multifaceted disorder influenced by genetic and environmental factors. MetS is associated with obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and hyperglycemia. Recently, attention has turned to gut microbiota, a diverse microbial community in the gastrointestinal tract implicated in metabolic diseases, including MetS. Berry cactus (Myrtillocactus geometrizans) contains polyphenols, pectins, sterols, and betalains with reported hypoglycemic, hypolipemic, anti-inflammatory, and antiproliferative properties. This study evaluated the impact of berry cactus juice concentrate (

Methanotrophs and co-occurring microbial taxa: Genomic potential for carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles in newly formed high-altitude proglacial lakes.

The extreme and fragile environments of high-altitude proglacial lakes shape unique microbial communities and metabolic networks, serving as active interfaces in the biogeochemical cycles of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S). However, the metabolic processes underlying microbially driven biogeochemical cycling in these lakes remain poorly understood. In this study, by integrating field investigations and isotopic analyses across multiple seasons, we observed geochemical and genomic evidence consistent with significant microbial methane (CH4) oxidation in the surface sediments of cryo-ol

The Biliary Multi-Omics Landscape: Integrating Microbiome and Metabolomics in Gallbladder Carcinogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is a highly aggressive malignancy with a dismal prognosis, frequently diagnosed at advanced stages. While cholelithiasis is a primary risk factor, the role of the biliary microbiome and its metabolic products in driving carcinogenesis is increasingly recognized. This review synthesizes multi-omics data to elucidate the interplay between microbial dysbiosis and metabolomic shifts in GBC. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted on PubMed (up to January 2026) focusing on biliary bacteria, the gut-bile axis, and multi-omics markers. A narrative s

Actinic Keratosis at the Crossroads of Inflammation and Cutaneous Dysbiosis.

Actinic keratosis (AK) represents an early stage of keratinocyte carcinogenesis and has long been attributed primarily to cumulative ultraviolet (UV) radiation-induced genetic damage. However, increasing evidence suggests that AK arises within a complex cutaneous microenvironment, in which chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, immune dysregulation, and alterations of the skin microbiota interact to promote and sustain field cancerization. UV exposure not only drives mutational events in epidermal keratinocytes, but also disrupts barrier integrity and local immune surveillance, reshaping micr

Bioremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons contaminated soils/water for environmental remediation.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent organic pollutants widely found in the environment due to natural and anthropogenic sources, including fossil fuel combustion, industrial emissions, and vehicle exhaust. These hydrophobic compounds are resistant to degradation, bioaccumulate in ecosystems/water, and pose significant environmental and health risks, including carcinogenesis and respiratory disorders. Conventional remediation methods, such as chemical and physical treatments, are often costly, energy-intensive, and environmentally disruptive, prompting the search for sustaina

Decoding anammox granulation: Microbial interactions promote granule formation and indirectly shape antibiotic resistance gene dissemination.

The formation of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) granules plays a crucial role in biomass retention. However, the microbial interaction, metabolic regulation, and risks associated with the dissemination of antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) during granulation remain insufficiently understood. In this study, an anammox granulation reactor was established and analyzed through integrated physicochemical characterization and multi-omics approaches to investigate changes in sludge properties, microbial communities, metabolic gene expression, and ARG profiles throughout granulation process. Unravelling the Role of Gut and Oral Microbiota in the Pediatric Population with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic autoimmune disease that results in the destruction of pancreatic β cells, leading to hyperglycaemia and the need for lifelong insulin therapy. Although genetic predisposition and environmental factors are considered key contributors to T1DM, the exact causes of the disease remain partially unclear. Recent evidence has focused on the relationship between the gut, the oral cavity, immune regulation, and systemic inflammation. In individuals with T1DM, changes in the gut and oral microbial composition are commonly observed, indicating that dysbiosis ma

Effects of MCPA and difenoconazole on glyphosate degradation and soil microorganisms.

Modern agriculture relies heavily on pesticide use to meet the demands of food quality and quantity. Therefore, pesticides are often applied in mixtures, leading to a diverse cocktail of chemicals and their metabolites in soils, which can affect non-target organisms such as soil microorganisms. Pesticides are tested for their single effects, but studies on their interactive effects are scarce. This study aimed to determine the effects of up to three simultaneously applied pesticides on the soil microbial community and on their special function in pesticide degradation. Adherence to Gluten-Free Diet Restores Alpha Diversity in Celiac People but the Microbiome Composition Is Different to Healthy People.

UNLABELLED: Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disease with the destruction of small intestinal villi, which occurs in genetically predisposed individuals. At the present moment, a gluten-free diet (GFD) is the only way to restore the functionality of gut mucosa. However, there is an open debate on the effects of long-term supplementation through a GFD, because some authors report an unbalance in microbial taxa composition. METHODS: For microbiome analysis, fecal specimens were collected from 46 CD individuals in GFD for at least 2 years and 30 specimens from the healthy controls (HC). Data

Dysbiosis revisited: Understanding the role of the oral microbiome in the pathogenesis of gingivitis and periodontitis: A critical assessment.

This commentary provides background, historical context, and a critical assessment of the concept that microbial dysbiosis drives the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. It is long known that periodontal pathogenesis is dependent on tooth-borne microbial biofilms (dental plaque) that trigger host inflammation resulting in periodontal destruction and tooth loss in some patients. Ecological principles governing plaque biofilm development, along with localized host responses, are both rooted in evolution. Interpretation of available evidence suggests that, in most patients, alveolar bone loss r

Analysis of oral microbial community and Th17-associated cytokines in saliva of patients with oral lichen planus.

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of oral mucosa of unknown cause. Microbial infection and dysimmunity appear to play important roles in its pathogenesis. In this study, differences in genetic profiling of salivary microbial communities in two subtypes of OLP and healthy controls were evaluated by means of PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Additionally, ELISA was used to investigate the possible role of Th17 in lesion formation by detecting two related cytokines IL-17 and IL-23 in the saliva of OLP patients. When the DGGE profiles were analyzed, the

Allergic sensitization and microbial load--a comparison between Finland and Russian Karelia.

Epidemiological data have indicated that some infections are associated with a low risk of allergic diseases, thus supporting the idea (hygiene hypothesis) that the microbial load is an important environmental factor conferring protection against the development of allergies. We set out to test the hygiene hypothesis in a unique epidemiological setting in two socio-economically and culturally markedly different, although genetically related, populations living in geographically adjacent areas. The study cohorts included 266 schoolchildren from the Karelian Republic in Russia and 266 schoolchil

Composition and function of biofilm microbial communities reveal high efficiency potential in carbohydrate metabolism in the mariculture.

Biofilms on composite carriers may contribute to organic matter transformation in mariculture effluents, but the taxa and carbon-metabolic functions underlying this process remain unclear. This study employed metagenomic sequencing and functional annotation to comprehensively analyze the microbial composition and metabolic potential involved in glycoside hydrolase (GH), glycolysis, and the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle in biofilms, revealing the functional characteristics of microbial communities in carbon metabolism. The results showed high microbial diversity in various carbon metabolism pa

Inflammasomes: guardians of cytosolic sanctity.

The innate immune system is critical in recognizing bacterial and viral infections to evoke a proper immune response. Certain members of the intracellular nucleotide-binding and oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptor (NLR) family detect microbial components in the cytosol and trigger the assembly of large caspase-1-activating complexes termed inflammasomes. Autoproteolytic maturation of caspase-1 zymogens within these inflammasomes leads to maturation and secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) and IL-18. The NLR proteins ICE protease-activating factor (I

Two independent conjugal transfer systems operating in Bacteroides fragilis V479-1.

Bacteroides fragilis V479-1 (also designated strain 92) has previously been shown to contain a conjugative plasmid, pBF4, that specifies resistance to clindamycin (Cc). A report of inducible tetracycline (Tc) resistance in this strain suggested that this phenotype was also plasmid associated (G. Privitera et al., Nature [London] 278:657-659, 1979) and prompted further investigation. Mating experiments with V469-1 and a Cc-sensitive derivative of V479-1, V598, showed that Tc resistance transfer occurred by a conjugation-like event which was insensitive to DNase, was not mediated by donor cultur
