Population Structure and Genetic Diversity of Tumbler Pigeon Based on Whole-Genome Resequencing.

The Tumbler pigeon, a genetic resource of pigeons, exhibits diverse feather colors and distinct flight characteristics compared with other pigeon species, but the genetic basis of these traits remains unclear. Using whole-genome resequencing technology with Illumina NovaSeq X Plus paired-end sequencing (PE150, read length 150 bp) at an average genome coverage of 14.5×, this study analyzed the genetic structure, genetic diversity, and genetic differentiation of 80 individual Tumbler pigeons, Tarim pigeons and homing pigeons, collected from different regions of Xinjiang. In principal component a

Exploring Genetic Contributions to Prostate Cancer Risk in an Asian Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Genetic susceptibility to prostate cancer (PCa) varies across populations, yet East Asian men remain underrepresented in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). This study aimed to identify genetic variants associated with PCa in a Taiwanese cohort and to explore their potential biological relevance using integrative annotation approaches. METHODS: We analyzed 961 PCa patients and 3792 age-matched controls from the Taiwan Biobank. Genotyping and imputation were performed using the Taiwan Biobank 2.0 array and the 1000 Genomes East Asian reference panel. Association testing was con

Shared genetic architecture between psychiatric and insulin-related traits in the general population.

Psychiatric conditions, like Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) are complex heritable disorders that frequently co-occur with insulin resistance (IR)-related conditions, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Traditional genetic case-control comparisons are challenged by the extent of heterogeneity and comorbidity within and across these conditions. In this study we used psychiatry-related traits in the general population in multivariate analyses to explore the potential genetic links with insulin-rela

The genetic diversity and populational specificity of the human gut virome at single-nucleotide resolution.

BACKGROUND: Large-scale characterization of gut viral genomes provides strain-resolved insights into host-microbe interactions. However, existing viral genomes are mainly derived from Western populations, limiting our understanding of global gut viral diversity and functional variations necessary for personalized medicine and addressing regional health disparities. RESULTS: Here, we introduce the Chinese Gut Viral Reference (CGVR) set, consisting of 120,568 viral genomes from 3234 deeply sequenced fecal samples collected nationwide, covering 72,751 viral operational taxonomic units (vOTUs), n

Genetic testing results of retinal dystrophies in a diverse population: impact of race and ethnicity.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the recent advent of gene-targeted retinal therapies, the clinical value of high-yield genetic testing for inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs) has increased considerably. However, diagnostic yield is limited by the reported patient populations in allele frequency databases. This study aimed to determine the effect of race and ethnicity on diagnostic yield in IRDs. METHODS: Retrospective review of individuals with suspected IRD based on clinical findings or diagnosis of associated syndrome who underwent genetic testing between 2009 and 2021. Self-reported race and ethnici

Association of genetic risk of Alzheimer's disease and cognitive function in two European populations.

Although there is some evidence of an association between Alzheimer's disease polygenic risk score (AD PRS) and cognitive function, limited validations have been performed in large populations. We investigated the relationship between AD PRS and cognitive function in the UK Biobank in over 276,000 participants and further validated the association in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) sample. We developed the AD PRS (excluded the APOE variants) in the middle age UK Biobank participants (age ranged 39-72, mean age 57 years) of European ancestries by LDpred2. To validate the

Genotyping by sequencing-based genetic insights into Argentine llama populations and breeding impacts.

Llama breeding is an important source of economic income for Andean communities, thus ensuring llama biodiversity is fundamental to making breeding decisions that promote sustainable production. Despite this, there is limited information on the genetic diversity of llama populations in Argentina. Moreover, some llama herds in the northwest region of the country exhibit low reproductive efficiency and a high incidence of congenital abnormalities. In this study, we used genotyping by sequencing, a genome-wide approach, to estimate the genetic diversity of Argentine llama populations, assess thei

Study of Genetic Progress in the Context of Disconnection Between Two Originally Connected Populations.

Genetic progress of breeding programs is highly dependent on the size of reference populations and the relatedness between reference populations and selection candidates. Many reasons can lead a population to split into several subpopulations (sanitary, physiological, political reasons, etc.). More specifically, alternative (e.g., organic) farming may lead to farms breaking away from the conventional scheme to form a distinct breeding scheme, especially in organic sheep farming where the ban on hormones makes the use of artificial insemination (AI) difficult. However, these potential splits of

Ethical and Practical Considerations in Implementing Population-Based Reproductive Genetic Carrier Screening.

Reproductive genetic carrier screening (RGCS) has emerged as a promising tool for identifying couples with an increased likelihood of conceiving a child with an autosomal recessive or X-linked genetic condition. By enabling early detection, RGCS has the potential to support informed reproductive decision-making. Historically, carrier screening initiatives aimed to decrease the prevalence of specific genetic disorders by targeting particular high-risk populations. More recently, there has been a shift towards offering RGCS for a wider range of conditions, with the goal of enhancing reproductive

Genetic susceptibility to recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis in an African population from Nairobi, Kenya.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) affects 75% of women worldwide at least once in their lifetime, with up to 9% of women experiencing recurrent episodes (RVVC). Genetic differences may play a role in women developing recurrent VVC infections. Thus, we investigated genetic host factors that may increase the risk of RVVC in women from an African population. We conducted a case-control study in women in Nairobi Kenya, to identify genetic risk factors for RVVC. Our genome-wide association study compared women with RVVC (n = 174) to those with acute VVC (n = 157), and with controls (n = 347). The cont

Western Hunter-Gatherer genetic ancestry contributes to human longevity in the Italian population.

The genetics of human longevity has been primarily studied using classical methods developed in genome-wide association studies. With the recent advances in paleogenomics, it is now possible to investigate to what extent ancient population ancestries contribute to complex traits. In this study, we explored the role of ancient genetic components in human longevity by focusing on the Italian Peninsula, whose genetic heritage includes several past genetic ancestries that have contributed to the current European genetic make-up. We analyzed genome-wide data of 333 Italian centenarians and 690 geog

Genetic differences between diagnosed and undiagnosed Celiac disease: a population-based study.

A large proportion of individuals with celiac disease (CeD) remain undiagnosed, often presenting at an older age of onset or with non-classical symptoms compared to diagnosed cases. Such heterogeneity might be related to genetic factors. The aim was to utilize a CeD-screened adult population to compare the genetic variants in known and newly diagnosed cases. In the fourth wave of the population-based Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT4) 826 CeD and 51,516 non-CeD individuals were included. Medical registries identified 361 previously diagnosed cases, while screening identified 465 new cases. A valid

Characterizing the genetic diversity and population structure of Plasmodium knowlesi in Aceh Province, Indonesia.

As in other parts of Southeast Asia, efforts to achieve or sustain malaria elimination in Indonesia have been threatened by the emergence of human infection with the primate species P. knowlesi. To understand the transmission dynamics of this species, investigation of P. knowlesi genetic diversity and population structure is needed. A molecular surveillance study was conducted in two phases between June 2014 and September 2018 at five primary health facilities in Aceh Province, Indonesia, an area nearing malaria elimination. Dried blood spot samples were collected from patients presenting with

Significance of common genetic variants associated with non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy in the general population.

AIMS: Common genetic variants have been linked to an increased risk of non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy (NICM). The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the significance of these variants in a general population. METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirteen NICM risk alleles, previously validated by meta-analyses of case-control genetic association studies, were used to determine genetic risk (GR) in a large, unselected cohort (n = 1897) of Olmsted County residents aged >45 years. Clinical and echocardiographic data, with biomarkers, were correlated with this NICM-GR over a median of 16 years of foll
