Between September 1983 and December 1988, we observed 16 cases of hematologic neoplasia associated with mediastinal germ-cell tumors. Twenty-eight similar cases have been reported in the literature. A review of the clinical and cytogenetic details in these patients suggests that the hematologic neoplasia is not the result of cisplatin-based chemotherapy of the mediastinal germ-cell cancer. Sperm counts, serum gonadotropins, and androgen levels were investigated in 39 seminoma patients and 58 patients with a nonseminomatous germ cell tumor of the testis after unilateral orchiectomy. The histology of 75 testicular germ cell tumours in 73 patients with treated or untreated cryptorchidism was investigated in a group of 503 patients with testicular germ cell tumour and evaluated according to the WHO classification. The introduction of cis-platinum-based chemotherapy has dramatically improved the prognosis for patients with primary nonseminomatous germ cell tumors of the mediastinum. A study of the incidence and clinical course of testicular germ-cell tumor metastatic to the gastrointestinal tract is presented. Gastrointestinal tract metastasis occurred in 25 cases, 5% of all patients evaluated with germ-cell tumor of the testis. The rare case of a testicular androblastoma associated with a complex germ cell tumor of the same testis is reported. Gynecomastia preceded the clinical appearace of testicular swelling by 3 months, suggesting that the 2 tumors developed contemporaneously and that, in theory, the Sertoli cell tumor is probably dependent on the germ cell tumor.

Chicken primordial germ cells (PGCs) are valuable for breeding, germplasm preservation, and genetic modifications. Here, using single-cell transcriptome analysis, we found that three transcriptionally distinct PGC subtypes were exist in chicken embryonic gonads PGCs. Emerging evidence suggests that selenium plays an essential role in sperm maturation. However, the specific signaling pathway by which selenium exerts effect has not been elucidated. To evaluate the effect of selenium on GPX4-mediated lipid peroxidation and apoptosis in germ cells, selenium deficiency was modeled by culturing GC2-spd cells in serum-free medium.
