Histopathologic examination can sometimes provide unexpected indications. In this report giant cell arteritis of uterine vessels was found. It permitted to explain biological abnormalities presented by the patient who suffered of a particularly inflammatory syndrome. These abnormalities had been initially attributed to repetitive urinary infections due to third-degree uterine prolapse (associated bladder prolapse). The diagnosis of periarteritis nodosa (P.A.N.) was supported with the results of muscular biopsy. This diagnosis was confirmed by evolution: it showed secondary renal and hepatic da

Three cases of giant cell fibroblastoma are presented. All three patients were boys younger than four years of age. The neoplasms involved the subcutaneous tissue of the back, perineum, and shoulder, respectively. The tumors were characterized histologically by a mixture of spindle cells and multinucleated giant cells in a myxoid or collagenous background and by the presence of irregular, sinusoidal spaces. All three patients had local recurrence, but all were tumor-free at latest follow-up.

A 79 year old woman is reported who has suffered pain in the jaws and mouth for several years. Giant cell arteritis was diagnosed by temporal artery biopsy after the appearance of severe temporal and frontal headache. Despite treatment with cortisone, sudden pain in the tongue appeared preventing speaking and swallowing and leading to ischemic necrosis of the anterior two thirds of the tongue. At the same time she had a transitory ischemic cerebral attack. Six almost identical case histories could be found in the literature: in three tongue necrosis was caused by histologically proven giant ce

A case of transient cerebral and retinal ischemia caused by giant cell arteritis is reported. Because of the distribution of the disease, the patient was treated with a subclavian to carotid reversed saphenous vein graft. The clinical features of giant cell arteritis affecting the branches of the aortic arch are reviewed, and the management of atypical carotid artery lesions is discussed.

Tissue from seven patients with tuberous sclerosis and subependymal giant-cell tumors was examined with special stains, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy. Immunoreactive glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) was not found in the giant cells of four tumors, but was present in some tumor cells in the other three. Immunoreactive S-100 protein was present in tumor cells of six cases; it was also seen in more tumor cells than was GFAP. Electron microscopy was similar in all cases and showed that the tumor cells had numerous organelles - many dense bodies thought to be primary lysosomes…

Three cases of giant cell arteritis that developed in patients with known seropositive rheumatoid arthritis are described. The coexistence of these 2 conditions has been felt to be unusual. The diagnostic difficulties encountered when 2 such inflammatory conditions coexist are discussed.

A patient was referred to the neuro-ophthalmology unit with a diagnosis of Foster-Kennedy syndrome; "papilledema" had been noted in the right eye and optic atrophy in the left. Results of radiographic examinations and lumbar puncture had been normal. The considerations and procedures leading to a correct diagnosis of giant cell arteritis are discussed.

In connection with our observations of three patients with giant-cell tumors of the sacrum a description of this disease is given reviewing the 51 cases which have been published world-wide. As other tumors of the sacrococcygeal region the giant-cell tumor has no significant symptoms which would allow a differential diagnosis. Pain in the sacral region often radiating to both legs is the predominant symptom. Surgical intervention is the treatment of choice. To obtain a complete excision of the tumor with minimal damage to nervous structures the abdominal, sacral or abdomino-sacral route is rec

The morphological study of Giant Cell Tumors of Bone collected at the Orthopaedic Department of C.H.U. Cochin, with high resolution radiography of macroscopical samples added to topographical cytology allows to report the following facts: --Mononuclear cells have cytonuclear criteria between histiocyte and fibroblast cells, quite apart from Chondroblastoma and Chondromyxoid fibroma. Cytological transitions are observed between mononuclear and giant cells. --Osteoid formation is usually connected with the lysis or the blow-up of the neighbouring cortex. Without secondary changes, collagenisatio…
