Congenital rhabdomyosarcoma of the tongue is exceedingly rare. Fibromatosis of the tongue is also rare, and very difficult to distinguish from the spindle cell variant of rhabdomyosarcoma. Both appear histologically as spindle neoplasms replacing normal striated musculature of the tongue. The treatment protocol for the former has been developed by the Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Studies (IRS) I-IV and requires surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive neuroendocrine tumor of the skin characterized by frequent local and regional recurrence, a high incidence of distant metastases and therefore a high mortality. Here, we report a case of an oropharyngeal metastasis of a Merkel cell carcinoma of the skin localized at the left base of the tongue causing dysphagia and the sensation of globus pharyngeus. The unusual metastatic site is presented, and diagnosis and treatment are discussed.

Hyo-sub-glosso-epiglottectomy was performed in 56 patients with a tumour of the vallecula or the anterior laryngeal margin. Tumour classification in most of the patients was T2 and N0-N1. Survival rate at 3 years was 54% and 40% at 5 years. Major impairment of deglutition occurred in 5.4% of the cases. This operation is indicated for limited tumours of the vallecula and the anterior laryngeal margin.

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is the surgery most often performed for sleep apnea syndrome (SAS). However, good results with UPPP, demonstrated by polysomnography, have been reported in only 50% of cases. A case of malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of the tongue is reported. The patient was a 60-year-old woman. She underwent extended hemiglossectomy, neck dissection and reconstruction of the defect with radial forearm microvascular free flap. Etiology, histopathology, differential diagnosis, clinical presentation, and treatment of GISTs are discussed. The absence of any previous report in the English-language literature about the occurrence of GIST in the tongue is emphasized.
