The applicability of multidimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to the analysis of five glycol ethers in air was demonstrated. Air samples were collected on charcoal tubes and desorbed with 5% methanol in methylene chloride as is described in method 1403 of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Manual of Analytical Methods. The glycol ethers were determined by multidimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The limit of detection was 5 to 7 micrograms/sample for each compound.

Recent work has shown that polyethylene glycol-electrolyte lavage solutions provide adequate cleansing in preparation for colonoscopy, barium enema, intravenous pyelography, and colon surgery. It is safe and well tolerated by patients, and seems ideal for those with renal or cardiovascular disease who must undergo colon cleansing. We review the development of polyethylene glycol-electrolyte lavage solution and the clinical experience with various colon-cleansing preparations.

The widely used industrial solvent ethylene glycol monomethyl ether (EGME) is teratogenic to rats and mice, inducing a variety of heart and major vessel abnormalities. A mixture of pure and anhydrous glycol methacrylate and methyl methacrylate is used as an embedding medium for iliac bone biopsies. Infiltration is carried out at -20 C with the embedding medium and a cold inactivated catalyst-initiator system. Raising the temperature to 4 C initiates polymerization and limits the peak temperature of polymerization to 25 C. In this way, such thermolabile enzymes as osteoclastic acid phosphatase are preserved. After staining, sections are dehydrated in polyethylene glycol 400 30% in 2-propanol. This gives flat sections and improves staining properties.

The efficacy of activated charcoal (AC) hemoperfusin therapy was studied in dogs acutely poisoned with lethal doses of barbital or ethylene glycol (EG). Two of three barbital-poisoned dogs treated with AC hemoperfusion survived; the dog tha died was only hemoperfused for 1.5 h. Phenylethylene glycol has been identified in rat and human urine using gas chromatography/chemical ionization/mass spectrometry. A method was developed for the quantitative analysis in urine of this phenylalanine metabolite and of p-hydroxyphenylethanol, a metabolite of tyrosine, by converting them to the pentafluoropropionyl derivatives and measuring them by selected ion monitoring. Between 1964 and 1970 the authors implanted Hydron gel in 62 patients with nose malformations. The cosmetic defects most frequently operated on were the saddle, and scoliosis of the nasal dorsum.
