Testing the latent structure of ICD-11 prolonged grief disorder symptoms in the U.K. adult population: An exploratory structural equation modeling approach.

The latent structure of ICD-11 prolonged grief disorder (PGD), as measured using the International Prolonged Grief Disorder Scale (IPGDS), was assessed in a large general population sample of bereaved adults from the United Kingdom. Data were derived from Wave 5 of the COVID-19 Psychological Research Consortium Study (C19PRC-UK). Exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) was used to assess the latent structure of the IPGDS. Identified factors were explored in relation to known correlates (i.e., gender, age of the bereaved, income, bereavement timeframe, age of the deceased) and functiona…

Validation of the Italian version Inventory of Complicated Grief (ICG): a study comparing CG patients versus bipolar disorder, PTSD and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: A minority (9%-20%) of bereaved individuals experience symptoms of persistent intense grief associated with significant distress and impairment. This recently identified distinct post-loss syndrome has been variously named complicated grief, prolonged grief disorder, traumatic grief and persistent complex bereavement disorder. The Inventory of Complicated Grief (ICG) is a self-report instrument used to reliably identify this syndrome. We undertook a study to: 1) validate the Italian version of the ICG; 2) examine its performance in a clinical of bereaved individuals with complicate…

Work-related grief and bereavement experiences of social and community service workers working with people experiencing social disadvantage: a rapid scoping review.

BACKGROUND: While an extensive body of research in palliative care exists on the experiences of grief and bereavement among family caregivers, much of this research is based on normative assumptions of who family caregivers are - housed, financially stable, and with extended family and/or friends to draw on for support. Research shows that in contexts of social disadvantage(e.g., homelessness and poverty, mental health and substance use concerns, racism and discrimination), social and community workers can become 'defacto' family and provide caregiving support at the end of life. Yet, there is…

The relationship between anticipatory grief and illness uncertainty among Chinese family caregivers of patients with advanced lung cancer: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Anticipatory grief has been shown to be highly prevalent among family caregivers of patients with advanced illness. Qualitative study suggests that illness uncertainty may be one of the core characteristics of anticipatory grief, but it has not been confirmed in quantitative studies. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between anticipatory grief and illness uncertainty among Chinese family caregivers of patients with advanced lung cancer and to determine the factors influencing anticipatory grief. METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study use…

Who suffered most after deaths due to COVID-19? Prevalence and correlates of prolonged grief disorder in COVID-19 related bereaved adults.

BACKGROUND: Deaths by COVID-19 have left behind nearly 12 million recent bereaved individuals worldwide and researchers have raised concerns that the circumstances of COVID-19 related deaths will lead to a rise prevalence of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) cases. However, to date, no studies have examined the prevalence of PGD among people bereaved due to COVID-19. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of PGD and investigated demographic and loss-related factors associated with prolonged grief symptoms among Chinese individuals bereaved due to COVID-19. METHODS: This was a cross-sectiona…

"I felt like I was missing 'me'": Long-term experiences of intrapersonal loss, grief, and change in adults with an acquired brain injury.

Experiences of loss and change following acquired brain injury (ABI) are frequent and multi-contextual, yet the long-term experiences of people with ABI are not well understood. This study explored the experiences of intrapersonal loss, grief and change in people with ABI, a decade after their injury. Twelve adults with ABI were interviewed 10-13 years post-injury. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, we identified four overarching themes: a dawning realization of the impact of injury; loss of personhood; loss and liminality; and learning to live with loss and grief. Our findings in…

Psilocybin-Assisted suppoRtive psychoTherapy IN the treatment of prolonged Grief (PARTING) trial: protocol for an open-label pilot trial for cancer-related bereavement.

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) represents a substantial public health issue, especially in oncology settings where it affects up to 30% of bereaved carers. Current best-practice treatments are lengthy, and up to 50% of participants have persistent PGD. Building on encouraging recent research with psychedelic-assisted therapies, the Psilocybin-Assisted suppoRtive psychoTherapy IN the treatment of prolonged Grief (PARTING) trial is the first study to consider psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy as a potential treatment for prolonged grief. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: PARTING is an open-la…

Assessing peri-loss emotions and their associations with ICD-11 prolonged grief disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder in a community sample of bereaved adults.

Previous studies have examined risk factors for ICD-11 Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) but the variation and levels of peri-loss emotional reactions (those occurring during or immediately after the loss), and their association with grief related distress, has received little attention. This study is the first to assess retrospectively reported peri-loss emotional responses and their associations with ICD-11 PGD and PTSD in a large, bereaved adult sample (N = 1170). Peri-loss emotional responses varied widely, with sadness and shock most strongly experienced. Females and those who lost a child, …

Do we all grieve the same? A multigroup test of the dimensional structure of prolonged grief disorder among Danish bereaved partners and children.

Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) is a newly recognized mental disorder in ICD-11 and DSM-5-TR. Several studies using exploratory factor analysis have found a unidimensional structure of the Prolonged Grief-13 (PG-13) measure of PGD. The recently published ICD-11 proposal proposes a distinction between two clusters of symptoms: Separation distress symptoms and associated cognitive, emotional and behavioral symptoms. The aim of the current study is to test competing factor structures of PGD in Danish samples of bereaved. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test competing models of PGD among t…

Distinctiveness of prolonged-grief-disorder- and depressive-symptom trajectories in the first 2 years of bereavement for family caregivers of terminally ill cancer patients.

OBJECTIVE: Grief reactions in bereaved caregivers of cancer patients have been identified individually as distinct prolonged grief disorder (PGD)-and major depressive disorder (MDD)-symptom trajectories, but no research has examined whether the patterns of change (trajectories) for PGD and MDD symptoms synchronize during bereavement. We conducted a secondary analysis study to investigate the construct distinctiveness of PGD and MDD by simultaneously identifying and examining similarities and differences between bereaved caregivers' PGD- and depressive-symptom trajectories from immediately post…

The loss of a fellow service member: Complicated grief in post-9/11 service members and veterans with combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder.

Bereavement is a potent and highly prevalent stressor among service members and veterans. However, the psychological consequences of bereavement, including complicated grief (CG), have been minimally examined. Loss was assessed in 204 post-9/11, when service members and veterans with combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) took part in a multicenter treatment study. Those who reported the loss of an important person completed the inventory of complicated grief (ICG; n = 160). Over three quarters (79.41%) of the sample reported an important lifetime loss, with close to half (47.06%)…

Prolonged Grief Disorder Among Relatives of Deceased Patients in Intensive Care Unit During the French COVID-19 Lockdown: Results From the OLAF Study.

The death of a relative in an intensive care unit (ICU) represents a major psychological burden. During the first COVID-19 lockdown in France, strict visiting restrictions profoundly altered end-of-life experiences and bereavement. In this context, our University Hospital implemented OLAF, a temporary ICU-psychiatry liaison phone-support service for relatives. We conducted a one-year prospective follow-up study of relatives bereaved after an ICU death. The primary outcome was the prevalence of Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) at 12 months. Secondary analyses explored the association between grie…
