PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to understand why a housing mobility experiment caused harmful effects on adolescent boys' risky behaviors.
METHODS: Moving to Opportunity (MTO) (1994-2010) randomly assigned volunteer families to a treatment group receiving a Section 8 rental voucher or a public housing control group. Our outcome was a global risky behavior index (RBI; measured in 2002, n = 750 boys) measuring the fraction of 10 items the youth engaged in, 6 measuring past 30-day substance use and 4 measuring recent risky sexual behavior. Potential mediators (measured in 2002) included

XPA is an essential protein in the nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathway, in charge of recruiting the ERCC1-XPF endonuclease complex to the DNA damage site. The only currently available structural insight into the binding of XPA to ERCC1 derives from the solution NMR structure of a complex between the ERCC1 central fragment and a 14-residue peptide, corresponding to the highly conserved binding motif of the XPA N-terminus, XPA₆₇₋₈₀. The extensive all-atom molecular-dynamics simulation study of the XPA₆₇₋₈₀ peptide both bound to the ERCC1 central fragment and free in solution presented here

This paper explains the differential diagnosis of neurological dysphagia. Special groups of diseases are described that can only be assessed by dynamic recording modalities like videofluoroscopy and high-speed cineradiography. The need for dynamic recording results from the physiological data of deglutition. The act of deglutition lasts only 0.7 s, but requires the well-coordinated action of 5 cranial nerves and 26 muscle groups. For a systematic analysis of the underlying neurological disease a precise description of possible pathological single observations from the oral cavity to the cardia

INTRODUCTION: In medical ultrasound education, static and dynamic images help learners to understand sonoanatomical and sonopathological findings. However, there is currently no clear evidence or recommendations from professional associations regarding which presentation format is more effective for developing ultrasound competencies. This prospective, randomised, controlled study aimed to investigate the impact of static versus dynamic ultrasound images on learners' acquisition of theoretical competencies in abdominal sonography.
METHODS: Participants in certified ultrasound courses were ran

BACKGROUND: Masseteric-to-facial nerve transfer excels in dynamic reanimation but is lacking in restoring baseline resting tone. Combining it with fascia lata grafts is expected to more fully enhance facial symmetry. Comprehensive comparison of the results of masseteric-to-facial nerve transfer versus combined static suspension may provide valuable insights into the most appropriate treatment for patients with subacute facial paralysis.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, 104 patients with facial paralysis were categorized by surgical procedure: 39 received masseteric-to-facial nerve transf

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
OBJECTIVE: This study compared multilevel ACDF using fixed-angle static versus dynamic plates. We hypothesized that static plates would better maintain lordosis and fusion construct height, with similar functional outcomes and nonunion rates, compared with dynamic plates.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Dynamic plates allow for translational collapse, theoretically improving fusion rates; conversely, fixed-angle static plates limit toggle at the screw-plate interface and may better maintain lordosis and construct height. Existing research comparing tradi

Impairments in visuomotor integration (VMI) may contribute to anomalous development of motor, as well as social-communicative, skills in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, it is relatively unknown whether VMI impairments are specific to children with ASD versus children with other neurodevelopmental disorders. As such, this study addressed the hypothesis that children with ASD, but not those in other clinical control groups, would show greater deficits in high-VMI dynamic grip-force tracking versus low-VMI static presentation. Seventy-nine children, aged 7-17 years, partici

BACKGROUND: Developing interventions along with the population of interest using systems thinking is a promising method to address the underlying system dynamics of overweight. The purpose of this study is twofold: to gain insight into the perspectives of adolescents regarding: (1) the system dynamics of energy balance-related behaviours (EBRBs) (physical activity, screen use, sleep behaviour and dietary behaviour); and (2) underlying mechanisms and overarching drivers of unhealthy EBRBs.
METHODS: We conducted Participatory Action Research (PAR) to map the system dynamics of EBRBs together wi

OBJECT: Phase contrast-cine MRI (PC-cine MRI) studies in patients with syringomyelia and Chiari malformation Type I (CM-I) have demonstrated abnormal CSF flow across the foramen magnum, which can revert to normal after craniocervical decompression with syrinx shrinkage. In order to investigate the mechanisms leading to postoperative syringomyelia shrinkage, the authors studied the hydrodynamic changes of CSF flow in the craniocervical junction and spinal canal in patients with scoliosis associated with syringomyelia after one-stage deformity correction by posterior vertebral column resection.

OBJECTIVE: This is Part II of a study on atlantoaxial rotatory fixation (AARF) that aims to introduce a new diagnostic paradigm and a new classification of this condition based on motion analysis of C1C2 rotation using computed tomographic (CT) imaging. This phase of the study is possible because Part I succeeded in defining physiological C1C2 axial rotation with CT data from 21 normal children, displayed in a highly concordant composite motion curve, which is used as the normal template for the present study. AARF is defined as flagrant departure from normal motion dynamics as delineated by a

As a response to the environment and internal signals, brain networks reorganize on a sub-second scale. To capture this reorganization in patients with disorders of consciousness (DoC) and understand their residual brain activity, we investigated the dynamics of electroencephalography (EEG) microstates. EEG microstates are meta-stable topographies that last tens to a few hundreds of milliseconds and are hypothesized to reflect large-scale cortical networks. To obtain EEG‑microstate segmentation, EEG topographies per sample were clustered into four groups for the purpose of the present comparis

The temporal organization of symmetric and asymmetric bimanual coordination tasks was compared between dyslexic adults and normally reading controls by means of a dynamical systems research strategy. Both groups demonstrated the influence of the intrinsic dynamics of rhythmic motor behavior on the performance of asymmetric bimanual tasks. In normal readers, manual asymmetries of motor control had a significant effect on the relative phasing of finger movements; no such effects were observed in dyslexic subjects. Group differences are discussed in terms of the interaction between neurological c

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have indicated substantial variations in anxiety and depressive symptoms over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, little is known about the comorbidity rates, heterogeneous co-developmental trajectories, and temporal network dynamics of these symptoms. Integrating person-centered and network psychopathology approaches, this study aimed to investigate the comorbidity rates and longitudinal network structures of anxiety and depressive symptoms across distinct co-developmental trajectories during the pandemic.
METHODS: A total of 35,516 college students com

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is one of the most common inherited causes of intellectual disabilities. While there is currently no cure for FXS, EEG is considered an important method to investigate the pathophysiology and evaluate behavioral and cognitive treatments. We conducted EEG microstate analysis to investigate resting brain dynamics in FXS participants. Resting-state recordings from 70 FXS participants and 71 chronological age-matched typically developing control (TDC) participants were used to derive microstates via modified k-means clustering. The occurrence, mean global field power (GFP)

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has emerged as a valuable tool for investigating neurobiological markers in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While previous studies have identified abnormal functional connectivity in ASD children compared with typically developing (TD) peers, brain connectivity dynamics and their associations with autism symptoms and cognitive abilities remain underexplored. We analyzed fNIRS data from 44 children (30 boys, 21 ASD/23 TD) aged 2.08-6.67 years while they viewed a silent cartoon. Using sliding window correlation and k-means clustering, w

Anhedonia, the diminished drive to seek, value, and learn about rewards, is a core feature of major depressive disorder1-3. The neural underpinnings of anhedonia and how this emotional state drives behaviour remain unclear. Here we investigated the neural code of anhedonia by taking advantage of the fact that when mice are exposed to traumatic social stress, susceptible animals become socially withdrawn and anhedonic, whereas others remain resilient. By performing high-density electrophysiology to record neural activity patterns in the basolateral amygdala (BLA) and ventral CA1 (vCA1), we iden

Depressive severity has been associated with attenuated neocortical frontal midline theta (Fm-θ) power/evoked activity. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) has shown to be a successful novel intervention for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), albeit precise working mechanisms remain elusive. We examined the hypothesis that MBCT would have modulating effects upon evoked Fm-θ power, in addition to investigating possible mediation of induced event-related de/synchronisation (ERD/ERS) dynamics. Fifty one patients with a primary diagnosis of MDD (26 exposed to MBCT vs. 25 wait-list/WL controls
