Formative research for developing targeted skin cancer prevention programs for children in multiethnic Hawaii.

Skin cancer is a significant and increasing public health problem. Improvement in sun protection practices among children holds great promise for prevention, and parents and caregivers play important roles. Health promotion programs are most likely to succeed when based on a systematic planning process including an understanding of current practices, beliefs, social norms and environments. This article describes formative research used to help develop the SunSmart skin cancer prevention program in Hawaii. Group discussions and interviews were conducted with 216 children in grades 1, 2 and 3, 1

Disease-specific report card pushes for improved care.

A California plan has unveiled a report card rating physician groups on their treatment of asthma patients. Is this the long-awaited signal that capitated physicians will be evaluated more by their management of care than their impact on the bottom line?

Exploring the public's perception and understanding of Parkinson's disease in Ireland: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: There appears to be a lack of empirical investigation on how the public currently understands Parkinson's Disease (PD)and the impact this has on people with PD and their carers, across Ireland. This research hopes to build a greater public understanding of PD, reduce stigma and improve the quality of life for people with PD. The aim of this study is to (1) explore public perceptions, awareness and understanding about PD across the island of Ireland and (2) discover how this impacts people with PD and their families. METHODS: This study will adopt a mixed-methods, sequential explan

Contrast-Enhanced Mammography Implementation: Early Struggles and Successes.

We used focus groups of radiologists who led the implementation of contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) in their practice to identify barriers and strategies for adoption. Members of the Society of Breast Imaging in the United States who served as lead on CEM implementation were invited to participate in 2 separate focus groups. Ten breast imaging radiologists with varied geographic and practice type (60% academic, 30% private, and 10% community practice) participated. There were 4 major themes identified: patient selection, workflow, contrast, and billing. Patient selection varied widely among

Co-design and mixed methods evaluation of an interdisciplinary digital resource for undergraduate health profession students to improve the prevention, recognition, and management of delirium in Ireland: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a common symptom of acute illness which is potentially avoidable with early recognition and intervention. Despite being a growing concern globally, delirium remains underdiagnosed and poorly reported, with limited understanding of effective delirium education for undergraduate health profession students. Digital resources could be an effective approach to improving professional knowledge of delirium, but studies utilising these with more than one profession are limited, and no evidence-based, interdisciplinary, digital delirium education resources are reported. This stu

Peer- and Mentor-Enhanced Web-Based Training on Substance Use Disorders: A Promising Approach in Low-Resource Settings.

Stigma and insufficient training contribute significantly to the substance use disorder pandemic. This 2014 study assessed the impact in Kenya of online competency-based courses on peer and mentor interactions, using NextGenU.org, the world's only portal to free and accredited higher education. A total of 99 health care workers participated in one of two courses. Completers (50% of those who logged in) reported significant increases in knowledge about substance use disorders and decreases in stigma. Most (92%) stated that they preferred the NextGenU.org courses over classroom courses. All resp

Barriers and Facilitators to Melanoma Prevention and Control Behaviors Among At-Risk Children.

Melanoma prevention is essential for children who are at elevated risk for the disease due to family history. However, children who carry a familial risk for the disease do not optimally adhere to recommended melanoma preventive behaviors. The current study sought to identify perceived barriers to and facilitators of children's engagement in melanoma preventive behaviors among children at elevated risk for melanoma due to family history of the disease (i.e., having a parent with a history of melanoma) from both parents' and childrens' perspectives. Qualitative methods were employed and consist

Parenting support for families with young children - a public health, user-focused study undertaken in a semi-rural area of Scotland.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To work with parents and public health nurses (health visitors), to identify and design a range of public health interventions to provide support to parents of young children. Variations in diagnostic criteria for carpal tunnel syndrome among Ontario specialists.

BACKGROUND: Variations in diagnostic criteria for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) may result in differing reports of disease prevalence, errors in diagnosis, and variable results of treatment. The objective of this study was to determine how consistent specialists are in their ratings of the importance of clinical criteria for the diagnosis of CTS. METHODS: Three hundred specialist physicians and surgeons received a questionnaire containing 57 clinical criteria for the diagnosis of CTS. A visual analog scale (VAS) was used to rate the importance of each criterion in the diagnosis of CTS. RESULT

Knowledge, attitudes and practices towards malaria among primary school pupils in Ndirande, Blantyre, Malawi.

A qualitative cross-sectional study was conducted at Ndirande Primary School in the peri-urban area of Blantyre, Malawi in 2002. The aim was to describe the knowledge, attitudes and practices towards malaria among pupils. Forty pupils (20 boys and 20 girls) were recruited into four focus group discussions. There was very good knowledge about the role of the female Anopheles mosquito as an agent for transmission of malaria. Respondents were also aware of the clinical features of malaria and what measures could be taken to prevent the disease. However, the survey showed that many of the environm

Public perceptions and risk communications for botulism.

Formative research findings from 10 focus group interviews on botulism are described. Data were collected from a diverse sample of people throughout the United States in 2003, as part of a collaborative multisite initiative sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to improve communications materials on bioterrorism agents. Focus group guides included questions on knowledge, action, emotions, and information seeking in response to a series of scenarios on a hypothetical terrorist attack using botulinum toxin.
