A prospective case-control study involving 75 low birthweight (LBW) babies and 224 controls was carried out at the Mount Hagen General Hospital over a period of 7 months, from June to December 1997. OBJECTIVE: The safety of scuba diving after stapedectomy is controversial. Stapedectomy is thought to predispose to inner ear barotrauma (e.g., perilymph fistula); however, many individuals continue to scuba dive following stapedectomy without ill effects. For more than 21 years a small semi-isolated group of wild chimpanzees have been studied at Bossou, Guinea, west Africa. All individuals have been identified since the beginning of the study. Remaining rates of infants (0-3 yr) and juveniles (4-7 yr) in the group were 64-80% for both sexes, however, those of adolescents (8-11 yr) dropped drastically, particularly for males (14%). PURPOSE/METHODS: The present study compares the electroretinogram responses of albino and pigmented guinea-pigs (Cavia porcellus) with data published for the rat and mouse.
RESULTS: We found that albino guinea-pigs gave significantly larger amplitudes and faster implicit times for a-wave and peak-to-peak responses than did pigmented animals. In contrast, pigmented and albino rats and mice do not show such differences between strains.
