[Significance of the seizure syndrome in acute craniocerebral injuries].

The author discusses the clinical, operative-tactical, and prognostic significant of the spasmodic epileptic syndrome caused by acute severe craniocerebral injury in 5.3% cases, He points out the criteria for the most accurate determination of the degree of reliability of the association between the seizures and the acute injury, which increases the degree of homogeneity of the contingent analyzed. In half of the cases partial seizures showed a tendency to secondary generalization. Primary generalized seizures were noted both in polar mediobasal contusions of the frontal lobes and in lateral w

Early life stress by repeated maternal separation induces long-term neuroinflammatory response in glial cells of male rats.

Childhood maltreatment and neglect lead to a wide range of mental disorders highlighted by hormone and immune alterations in neglected children. This social-health challenge has led to the creation of early stress models such as maternal separation (MS) in rodents. We performed a MS model (4 h per day, 21 days; n = 16 MS and n = 16 control), and then measured three parameters in adult male rat brains, in order to look for long-term effects of early life stress. We used immunocytochemistry to mark glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)-positive cells, which indicates changes in astroglia, and i

Corticosterone attenuates conditioned fear responses and potentiates the expression of GABA-A receptor alpha-2 subunits in the brain structures of rats selected for high anxiety.

The aim of the experiment was to assess the effects of an acutely administered corticosterone on the expression of GABA-A receptor alpha-2 subunits in the brain structures of high (HR) and low (LR) anxiety rats (divided according to their conditioned fear-induced freezing response) subjected to a second conditioned fear session (1 week after fear conditioning). We found that corticosterone (20 mg/kg, sc) given to rats prior to the second conditioned fear session significantly enhanced a decrease in fear expression in the HR group. The behavioural effect of fear was accompanied by the increased

Effect-size seed-based d mapping of resting-state fMRI for persistent insomnia disorder.

BACKGROUND: Recently, several functional neuroimaging studies have been conducted in patients with persistent insomnia disorder, but these studies have yielded diverse findings. We aimed to identify convergence in function across the heterogeneity of patients, modalities, and methods for insomnia disorder by performing a quantitative coordinate-based meta-analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a quantitative, voxel-wise meta-analysis of resting-state fMRI studies using seed-based d mapping to find convergence of functional alterations in persistent insomnia disorder. RESULTS: We inclu

Regional Distribution and Evolution of Gray Matter Damage in Different Populations of Multiple Sclerosis Patients.

BACKGROUND: Both gray-matter (GM) atrophy and lesions occur from the earliest stages of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and are one of the major determinants of long-term clinical outcomes. Nevertheless, the relationship between focal and diffuse GM damage has not been clarified yet. Here we investigate the regional distribution and temporal evolution of cortical thinning and how it is influenced by the local appearance of new GM lesions at different stages of the disease in different populations of MS patients. METHODS: We studied twenty MS patients with clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), 27 with e

Inhibitory control-related neural pathways of early adversity to internalizing problems in preadolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to early life adversity has long-reaching effects on the psychopathology of adolescents. However, some individuals exposed to early life stressors, such as threat and deprivation, do not later present with symptoms. Previous research suggests that neural mechanisms may play a role in differentiating pathways from early life threat or deprivation to internalizing symptoms. METHOD: This study utilizes neuroimaging to examine the relationship between early adversity experiences and internalizing symptoms later on. Data from the ABCD® study were used to investigate whether inh

Causal Links of Type 2 Diabetes and Its Complications With Cortical Modification: A Mendelian Randomization and Mediation Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and its complications are linked to cognitive decline over time, accompanied by cortical abnormalities. The causality between T2D and cortical modifications, however, remains elusive. METHODS: Applying two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR), we probed causal relationships between T2D and its complications and cortical modifications. Genetic associations were elucidated via linkage disequilibrium score regression and Bayesian colocalization. An instrumental variable-guided protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed and subjected to clustering a

Cingulate Gradient Dysfunction in End-Stage Renal Disease: Associations With Clinical Phenotypes and Exploratory Transcriptomic Signatures.

AIMS: The cingulate cortex is highly vulnerable in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, but whether ESRD disrupts its functional gradient and the links to clinical phenotypes and underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled clinical and resting-state functional MRI data from 125 participants (77 ESRD patients, 48 healthy controls) to explore cingulate gradient alterations. Associations between cingulate gradients and canonical functional networks, clinical phenotypes, and meta-analytic behavioral domains were analyzed. A gene expression decoding analy

EEG-Based Multifocal Tomographic Neurofeedback in Older Individuals With Chronic Tinnitus Does Not Lead to Persistent Electrophysiological Changes.

PURPOSE: Tinnitus is typically a chronic condition characterized by phantom hearing sensations in the absence of external sound sources. Although there is currently no commonly agreed neurobiological model of tinnitus generation and chronification, several electrophysiological parameters have been proposed as potential neural markers to objectify tinnitus symptoms. Accordingly, electroencephalography-based (EEG) neurofeedback may prove to be a promising symptom-relieving intervention to directly influence the development, maintenance, and distress of tinnitus. In the present clinical study, we

Resting-state functional connectivity of the rostral and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex in older bereaved adults.

BACKGROUND: Older adults are at higher risk of losing a loved one, with approximately 10 % developing prolonged grief disorder (PGD) after loss. PGD is characterized by distressing and impairing symptoms, reduced life quality, and increased suicide risk. While attentional processes may contribute to PGD pathophysiology, the rostral (rACC) and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) appear to play different yet complementary roles in attention in the bereavement context. However, the respective contributions of the connectivity of these two regions in PGD symptom severity have never been evalua

Proteomic Analysis of Chronic Binge Alcohol-Induced Hippocampal and Anterior Cingulate Cortex Neuroadaptations in Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV)-Infected Female Rhesus Macaques.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection produces neurological comorbidities including HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) and chronic pain. HIV also increases the risk of developing an alcohol use disorder (AUD). With the rising prevalence of AUD in women and people with HIV (PWH), understanding the neurobiological impact of alcohol in these populations is important. We examined proteomic alterations in the hippocampus and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), brain regions critical for cognition and affective pain, in a female rhesus macaque model of chronic binge alcohol administra

Cortical Control of Itch Sensation by Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide-Expressing Interneurons in the Anterior Cingulate Cortex.

The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) has recently been proposed as a key player in the representation of itch stimuli. However, to date, little is known about the contribution of specific ACC interneuron populations to itch processing. Using c-Fos immunolabeling and in vivo Ca2+ imaging, we reported that both histamine and chloroquine stimuli-induced acute itch caused a marked enhancement of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)-expressing interneuron activity in the ACC. Behavioral data indicated that optogenetic and chemogenetic activation of these neurons reduced scratching responses related t

The impact of long-term social housing on biconditional association task performance and neuron ensembles in the anterior cingulate cortex and the hippocampal CA3 region of aged rats.

Cognitive decline and changes in neuronal activity are hallmarks of aging. While environmental enrichment (EE) can protect against cognitive deficits in old age, whether EE with long-term social housing provides greater protection than EE alone, and the underlying neuronal mechanisms, remain unknown. Here, aged socially housed (SH), aged non-socially housed (NSH), and young rats were tested on the biconditional association task (BAT), a test of cognitive flexibility in which the rewarded object depends on the subjects' location in a Y maze. Immediate early genes were used to assess neuronal ac

[Mechanism of Chaijin Jieyu Anshen Tablets in regulating abnormal ACC-vHPC glutaminergic neural circuit to alleviate synaptic remodeling of ventral hippocampal neurons in depressed rats].

This study aims to reveal the molecular mechanism of Chaijin Jieyu Anshen Tablets(CJJYAS) in regulating the abnormal anterior cingulate cortex(ACC)-ventral hippocampus(vHPC) glutaminergic neural circuit to alleviate synaptic remodeling of ventral hippocampal neurons in depressed rats. Firstly, the study used chemogenetics to localize glutaminergic adeno-associated virus(AAV) into the ACC brain region of rats. The model of depressed rats was established by chronic unpredictable mild stress(CUMS) combined with independent feeding. The rats were randomly divided into control group, model group, A

Abnormal resting-state functional connectivity of the right anterior cingulate cortex in chronic ketamine users and its correlation with cognitive impairments.

BACKGROUND: Chronic ketamine use leads to cognitive impairments, however, the neural mechanisms underpinning these impairments are still unclear. AIMS: Many studies showed Anterior cingulate cortex (ACC)is strongly involved in cognition and drug addiction, as supported by our previous studies. The objective of this study was to assess the variations in resting-state functional connectivity (FC) changes in the right anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) of chronic ketamine users (CKUs) and their relationship with cognitive performance. METHODS: The study enrolled 28 chronic ketamine users (CKUs) an

Shared and differing functional connectivity abnormalities of the default mode network in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) both show abnormal resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of default mode network (DMN), but it is unclear to what extent these abnormalities are shared. Therefore, we performed a comprehensive meta-analysis, including 31 MCI studies and 20 AD studies. MCI patients, compared to controls, showed decreased within-DMN rsFC in bilateral medial prefrontal cortex/anterior cingulate cortex (mPFC/ACC), precuneus/posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), right temporal lobes, and left angular gyrus and increased rsFC between DMN and left inferi

Brain extended and closed forms glutathione levels decrease with age and extended glutathione is associated with visuospatial memory.

During aging, the brain is subject to greater oxidative stress (OS), which is thought to play a critical role in cognitive impairment. Glutathione (GSH), as a major antioxidant in the brain, can be used to combat OS. However, how brain GSH levels vary with age and their associations with cognitive function is unclear. In this study, we combined point-resolved spectroscopy and edited spectroscopy sequences to investigate extended and closed forms GSH levels in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), and occipital cortex (OC) of 276 healthy participants (extended f

Negative affect and craving during abstinence from smoking are both linked to default mode network connectivity.

BACKGROUND: Negative affect and craving during abstinence from cigarettes predict resumption of smoking. Therefore, understanding their neural substrates may guide development of new interventions. Negative affect and craving have traditionally been linked to functions of the brain's threat and reward networks, respectively. However, given the role of default mode network (DMN), particularly the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), in self-related thought, we examined whether DMN activity underlies both craving and negative affective states in adults who smoke. METHODS: 46 adults who smoke absta
