Clinical and Microbiological Effects of Streptococcus salivarius K12 Lozenges and Zinc Mouthrinse on Persistent Intra-Oral Halitosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Halitosis is a common condition with substantial psychosocial impact, frequently driven by intra-oral biofilm, tongue coating, and reduced salivary clearance. This study compared the short-term effectiveness of standardized counseling alone, probiotic lozenges containing Streptococcus salivarius K12, and a zinc-containing mouthrinse in adults with persistent intra-oral halitosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this 4-week, parallel-group, randomized pragmatic trial, 117 adults with bothersome halitosis for at least 3 months and baseline organoleptic score ≥ 2 were alloca…

Association between oral bacterial species and halitosis: findings from a study of a community-based Japanese population.

Halitosis is known to be associated with oral bacteria; however, its specific relationship with particular bacterial species within the oral microbiota remains uncertain. Our objective was to identify oral bacterial species associated with volatile sulfur compound (VSC) production that contribute to halitosis in a community-based Japanese population. This study included 1018 participants. Tongue plaque samples were collected and the oral microbiome was analyzed via 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing. Participants with VSC levels greater than 250 ppb were categorized as having oral malodor. Linear di…

Halitosis in cystinosis patients after administration of immediate-release cysteamine bitartrate compared to delayed-release cysteamine bitartrate.

Halitosis due to dimethylsulfide (DMS) generation is a major side effect of cysteamine in the treatment of cystinosis. Recently, an enteric coated formulation of cysteamine bitartrate (RP103) administered twice daily was demonstrated to be non-inferior for lowering WBC cystine levels compared to the non-enteric coated formulation (Cystagon®), administered 4 times per day. Since both formulations had different pharmacokinetic profiles, we compared DMS breath levels after administration of either RP103 or Cystagon® in four cystinosis patients. Although cysteamine areas under the curve (AUCs) wer…

Enterogenous extra-oral halitosis has a more severe impact on quality of life in females compared to males.

Some studies have examined the impact of intra-oral halitosis on quality of life (QOL), but the impact of enterogenous extra-oral halitosis (EOH) on QOL has not been previously studied. We conducted a retrospective analysis of data from 88 patients with enterogenous EOH who visited our online halitosis clinic. A specialized halitosis associated life-quality test (HALT) questionnaire was used to assess QOL of these patients. Spearman correlation analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between HALT score and age. We found that 21 (23.86%) patients were male and 67 (76.14%) patient…

ORGANOLEPTIC AND HALITOMETRIC ASSESSMENTS DO NOT CORRELATE WELL IN INTRA-ORAL HALITOSIS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW AND META-ANALYSIS.

BACKGROUND: The gold standard method for diagnosing oral halitosis is the subjective organoleptic measurement. Device-supported methods are also widespread worldwide. The challenges and safety concerns around performing organoleptic measurements during pandemics and the diversity of measuring device alternatives raised our clinical question: which halitometer is the most suitable for diagnosing halitosis? METHODS: This systematic review was registered in PROSPERO (ID CRD42022320024). The search was performed on March 23, 2022 in the following electronic databases: MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web…
