Impact of software and hardware technologies on occupational health and safety policies in Saudi Arabian oil refineries.

This article seeks to examine the impact of technology importation on occupational health and safety in both Saudi Arabian and U.S. oil refining industries. Technologies imported to the Saudi oil industry take two forms: hardware (sophisticated equipment to run oil facilities) and software (policies and regulations pertaining to workers' health and safety, and employment rights installed by Aramco's founding multinational companies). This study utilizes qualitative, historically oriented, cross-national case studies to compare and assess workers' health, safety, and rights in Saudi Aramco with

The cross-sectional study of the health effects of occupational exposure to carbon disulfide in a Chinese viscose plant.

This article presents results of carbon disulfide exposure assessment in a Chinese viscose rayon factory and represents the cross-sectional study beginning phase of the occupational epidemiological project. The authors measured external exposure levels to carbon disulfide at a Chinese viscose rayon factory and monitored results as internal exposure indexes by testing urine samples of workers exposed to carbon disulfide levels. The rate at which carbon disulfide is metabolized by exposed subjects was demonstrated by 2-thio-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid (TTCA) concentrations in urine of exposed

Injuries in home health care workers: an analysis of occupational morbidity from a state compensation database.

BACKGROUND: Home health services represent one of the fastest-growing segments of the US economy. Home health care workers (HHCWs) might be expected to have a high incidence and increased severity of injury because of inherent difficulty in control over their work environment, and the limited amount of research on injuries in home health care appears to support this hypothesis. METHODS: Using data on workers' compensation claims for 1995-1996 from a large state database, we calculated the incidence, frequency, and types of injuries occurring in this working population. Comparison data were dr

[Problems in the current education and training system for occupational health physicians in Japan and strategies to solve them].

Occupational Health Physician (OHP) has been defined as a title in the Occupational Safety and Health Law since 1972 when the Law was first implemented. The Law stipulates that each manager of an establishment with 50 or more workers is requested to appoint an OHP from among qualified physicians. The small number of applicants to OHP, especially from the younger generation, has continued for more than twenty years causing the average age of OHPs in Japan to rise. The shortage of successors to OHPs in active service is also very serious. A rapid increase in the number of graduates from medical

[THE LOW-QUALITY DRINKING WATER AT SHIP AS THREAT OF DAMAGING HEALTH OF SAILORS AND DEVELOPING OCCUPATIONAL DISEASES].

The normal professional activity of crew members of seagoing vessels requires permanent access to drinking water. The quality and safety of water are determined by combination of indicators characterizing physical, chemical, bacteriological, organoleptic and other properties. On particular vessels of merchant navy, drinking water may contain chemical substances or microorganisms contributing to development of intestinal infections and viral diseases. Furthermore, law-quality water on ship board can contribute to development of occupational diseases among sailors. The article reveals procedure

Health and safety management actions to reduce the impact that medication can have on occupational risks in SMEs.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational risks and accidents are a global concern, so this analysis has been undertaken by a multitude of researchers. However, there is a limited body of research specifically addressing the influence of medication on occupational risks and, more notably, the development of measures aimed at controlling or reducing the impact that such medication may have on workplace safety and health. This scientific gap is even greater among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). METHODS: The general objective of the research presented here is to identify and explore possible health

Impact of Indoor Air Pollution on Occupational Exposure: Rethinking the Major Health Threat for Airport Workers.

(1) Background: Airports workers are exposed to a mixture of airborne pollutants generated by aircraft operations, ground support equipment, road traffic, and indoor microenvironments. Indoor air quality, influenced by outdoor pollutant and ventilation dynamics, represents an important, but overlooked determinant of occupational exposure. Fine and ultrafine particulate matter (PM) can induce oxidative stress, inflammation, and xenobiotic responses, affecting not only the respiratory system, but also other organs. (2) Methods: This review examines the health effects of occupational exposure amo

Artificial Intelligence in Occupational Health Surveillance: Evaluating AI-Assisted ILO Classification of Radiographs of Pneumoconioses.

BACKGROUND: Pneumoconioses remain an important occupational health issue, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The International Labour Organization (ILO) Classification standardizes chest radiograph interpretation but requires trained readers and is affected by inter-reader variability. This study evaluated whether generative multimodal artificial intelligence (AI) models can approximate ILO-based diagnostic reasoning. METHODS: Eighty-two chest radiographs from the official NIOSH B Reader syllabus were analysed using four AI systems (GPT-4o, GPT-5, MedGemma-4B, MedGemma-27B). Ea

Household-level surrounding greenspace as a nature-based intervention for health recovery after occupational injury.

INTRODUCTION: Urban greening has been increasingly discussed as a component of health-supportive environments. While greenspace exposure has been associated with psychological restoration, limited evidence exists regarding household-level responses among families affected by occupational injury. This study examined whether a structured forest-based intervention was associated with short-term changes in psychological burden, resilience, and perceived family relationship quality across household roles. METHODS: A single-group pre-post design was applied to injured workers and their cohabiting f
