Community Coalition Building and Human-Centered Design Strategies to Advance Homeless Health Systems: A Case Study from Rural North Carolina.

In Burke County, North Carolina, a Hepatitis A outbreak among unsheltered residents exposed gaps in access to clinic-based care and prompted early, ad hoc "backpack medicine" outreach efforts to deliver care directly in nontraditional settings. While this approach addressed immediate needs, it highlighted the inadequacy of isolated interventions, prompting local partners to pursue more structured, coordinated, and community-driven approaches to homeless health system design. This project report describes how Burke County Public Health, in partnership with the University of North Carolina at Ch

Addressing health needs of the homeless in Delhi: Standardising on the issues of Street Medicine practice.

Due to barriers in accessing and using healthcare services, a large proportion of the care homeless populations receive comes from informal providers. In Delhi, one such informal programme, called Street Medicine, provides healthcare outreach to homeless communities. Clinical practice guidelines are set to be developed for Street Medicine teams in India and form the object of this research. This study uses a social-ecological model to understand the barriers facing Street Medicine teams and the homeless as they attempt to address the latter's healthcare needs; coupling it with an analytical ap

A Perspective on the 2023 Cholera Outbreaks in Zimbabwe: Implications, Response Strategies, and Policy Recommendations.

Cholera continues to severely threaten public health, particularly in regions with inadequate access to clean water and sanitation. Zimbabwe, a southern African nation, has witnessed recurrent cholera outbreaks, highlighting the enduring vulnerabilities faced by communities grappling with these underlying challenges. The 2023 cholera outbreak in Chegutu resulted in a devastating impact, with approximately 100 reported deaths and nearly 5000 confirmed and suspected cases. Beyond its immediate health consequences, the outbreak has strained the already fragile healthcare system, exacerbated issue

Unmet Occupational Health Needs of Malawian Ex-Miners from the South African Gold Mines.

Background: From early in its history, gold mining in South Africa involved recruiting hundreds of thousands of workers from Malawi and other neighbouring countries to work in an environment conducive to high rates of tuberculosis and silicosis. Official recruitment from Malawi ended in the 1990s, depriving large numbers of these migrant miners of their livelihood, with limited or no access to employment-linked social benefits and services. Objectives: To describe barriers faced by Malawian migrant ex-gold miners in accessing social benefits related to occupational lung disease and related hea

ADHD Diagnosis and Drug Use Estimates in France: A Case for Using Health Care Insurance Data.

Objective: Prevalence estimates for ADHD have been debated for decades. In France, the only available study states the prevalence rate in France ranges from 3.5% to 5.6% of children aged 6 to 12. It also evaluates that 3.48% of children aged 6 to 12 are treated with psychostimulants. The article uses a different method to determine whether these estimates hold true. Method: Estimating ADHD diagnosis and methylphenidate prescription rates can be done by analyzing national health care insurance system's data. We used data from the French Healthcare Insurance as reported by the National Agency fo

Assessing stakeholder perceptions and contextual factors in implementing post-discharge malaria chemoprevention in children with severe anaemia in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Severe anaemia poses a significant threat to children under five in sub-Saharan Africa, serving as one of the leading causes of hospitalisation and mortality in Malawi. In endemic regions, malaria complicates recovery in children admitted with severe anaemia and increases relapse risk. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends post-discharge malaria chemoprevention (PDMC) in moderate to high malaria transmission areas to reduce post-discharge mortality and readmissions. Still, it offers limited guidance on its implementation. This formative research study aimed to assess stake

Funding Distributions, Trends, Gaps, and Policy Implications for Spinal Cord Injury Research: A Systematic Analysis of U.S. Federal Funds.

Federal agencies including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Defense (DoD) Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP) Spinal Cord Injury Research Program (SCIRP), and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provide the majority of funding for spinal cord injury (SCI) research in the United States. However, systematic evaluation of how funding is distributed across research areas, therapeutic approaches, and translational stages has been limited. To understand the distribution of funds, we curated and classified 1,589 federally funded SCI research awards

Refugee Policy Implications of U.S. Immigration Medical Screenings: A New Era of Inadmissibility on Health-Related Grounds.

Refugees frequently face extended delays in their efforts to enter the United States (U.S.) and those who are successful, in many cases, encounter overwhelming obstacles, inadequate resources, and a complex system of legal barriers. Travel restrictions based on equivocal health concerns and a drop in refugee admittance ceilings have complicated the situation. The authors retrieved and analyzed peer-reviewed journal articles, government agency press releases, media postings, epidemiologic factsheets, and relevant lay publications to critically assess U.S. policy regarding refugee resettlement b

Meditations on the Italian population of low interest to the vaccination campaign against the pandemic from H1N1v. The point of view of the region.

In this article we developed a technical reflection on the organization of the National Pandemic Influenza A H1N1 variant plan, implemented in the Italian Region and in specific in the Local Health Agency Taranto. The audit has raised some critical issues that led to the limited success of the vaccination campaign. Among the critics it was really difficult to find quickly and easily those healthy individuals at risk for disease. Therefore it raises the need to prepare a special population register as an essential preliminary step necessary for the active call of the target population in antici
