The Relationship between Healthy Vascular Aging with the Mediterranean Diet and Other Lifestyles in the Spanish Population: The EVA Study.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between healthy vascular aging (HVA) and the Mediterranean diet alongside other lifestyles in a Spanish population aged 35 to 75 years without previous cardiovascular diseases. METHODS: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 501 individuals aged 35 to 75 years were recruited from five health centers by random sampling stratified by age and sex (55.90 ± 14.24 years, 49.70% men). HVA was determined in two steps. Step 1: Subjects with vascular damage to the carotid arteries or peripheral arterial disease were classified as non

Effect of long-term caloric restriction on DNA methylation measures of biological aging in healthy adults from the CALERIE trial.

The geroscience hypothesis proposes that therapy to slow or reverse molecular changes that occur with aging can delay or prevent multiple chronic diseases and extend healthy lifespan1-3. Caloric restriction (CR), defined as lessening caloric intake without depriving essential nutrients4, results in changes in molecular processes that have been associated with aging, including DNA methylation (DNAm)5-7, and is established to increase healthy lifespan in multiple species8,9. Here we report the results of a post hoc analysis of the influence of CR on DNAm measures of aging in blood samples from t

Do Not Go Gentle into That Deaf Night: A Holistic Perspective on Cochlear Implant Use as Part of Healthy Aging.

Research suggests that cochlear implant (CI) use in elderly people improves speech perception and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). CI provision could also prevent dementia and other comorbidities and support healthy aging. The aim of this study was (1) to prospectively investigate potential changes in HRQOL and speech perception and (2) to identify clinical action points to improve CI treatment. Participants (n = 45) were CI recipients aged 60-90 with postlingual deafness. They were divided into groups, according to age: Group 1 (n = 20) received a CI between the age of 60-70 years; gro…

A Systematic Review of the Application of Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy to the Study of Cerebral Hemodynamics in Healthy Aging.

Positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have shown that healthy aging is associated with functional brain deterioration that preferentially affects the prefrontal cortex. This article reviews the application of an alternative method, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), to the study of age-related changes in cerebral hemodynamics and factors that influence cerebral hemodynamics in the elderly population. We conducted literature searches in PudMed and PsycINFO, and selected only English original research articles that used fNIRS to s…

Which one came first: movement behavior or frailty? A cross-lagged panel model in the Toledo Study for Healthy Aging.

BACKGROUND: There has been limited longitudinal assessment of the relationship between moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behaviour (SB) with frailty, and no studies have explored the possibility of reverse causality. This study aimed to determine the potential bidirectionality of the relationship between accelerometer-assessed MVPA, SB, and frailty over time in older adults. METHODS: Participants were from the Toledo Study for Healthy Aging. We analysed 186 older people aged 67 to 90 (76.7 ± 3.9; 52.7% female participants) over a 4-year period. Time spent in SB and M…

Are macrophages, myeloid derived suppressor cells and neutrophils mediators of local suppression in healthy and cancerous tissues in aging hosts?

Most cancers emerge in elderly and immune-comprised hosts implying an important role for cancer immune surveillance. Here, we focus on the role of tissue-associated innate immune cells including antigen presenting cells (i.e. dendritic cells and macrophages), myeloid derived suppressor cells and neutrophils in healthy and cancer-bearing elderly hosts. Most cancers, including the cancers that we are interested in, i.e. lung carcinomas and mesothelioma, emerge in aging populations at a time when naïve T cell function is declining. CD8(+) cytotoxic T lymphocytes are critical anti-tumor effector c

Healthy aging is associated with increased neural processing of positive valence but attenuated processing of emotional arousal: an fMRI study.

Arousal and valence play key roles in emotional perception, with normal aging leading to changes in the neural substrates supporting valence processing. The objective of this study was to investigate normal age-related changes in the neural substrates of emotional arousal processing. Twenty-three young and 23 older, healthy women underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging as they viewed images which were neutral or positive in valence and which varied in arousal level from low to high. Using a parametric modulation approach, we examined how the blood oxygen-level dependent signal varied w

Common and differential pathophysiological features accompany comparable cognitive impairments in medication-free patients with schizophrenia and in healthy aging subjects.

BACKGROUND: Dysfunction of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and parahippocampal region along with poor working memory are common neurophysiological and behavioral features associated with schizophrenia and normal aging. It is, however, unknown whether the associated patterns of neural activation differ between these two groups when their cognitive performance is closely matched in a pairwise manner. The authors sought to pinpoint common and differential pathophysiological features that accompany comparable working memory impairments in schizophrenia and healthy aging. METHODS: Fifty…

Aging and drug interactions. I. Effect of cimetidine and smoking on the oxidation of theophylline and cortisol in healthy men.

The effect of age on the inhibition of theophylline metabolism was investigated in young and old male cigarette smokers (greater than 20 cigarettes/day) and nonsmokers by stable isotope methodology. Subjects received oral theophylline (510 mg/day) for 14 days and cimetidine (1200 mg/day) during days 1 to 7 or 8 to 14. On days 7 and 14, a tracer dose (10 mg i.v.) of stable isotope-labeled theophylline was administered with the oral dose of theophylline. Plasma clearance in old nonsmokers was 33% less than in young nonsmokers. Values in both young and old smokers were not significantly different

Recommendations for the development, implementation, and evaluation of technology-assisted physical activity interventions to support healthy aging: insights from PhysAgeNet.

Digital health technologies offer substantial potential to support physical activity among older adults, yet their development and implementation often remain driven by technological possibilities rather than clinical evidence and user needs. This position paper, developed within the PhysAgeNet COST Action, synthesizes current evidence and expert consensus to provide recommendations for designing, evaluating, and implementing technology-assisted physical activity interventions for older adults. We first outline key technology categories and functions relevant to physical activity promotion, in

Study protocol for applying flourishing to healthy aging: a cross-cultural exploration of older adults' lived experiences and experts' perspectives.

Healthy aging is often misinterpreted as merely delaying biological aging and extending longevity, overlooking the broader dimensions of wellbeing and quality of life in later years. Dominant biomedical frameworks frequently underestimate the human essence in aging, neglecting the holistic and multidimensional aspects of life that contribute to thriving in late adulthood. This study applies the concept of flourishing to examine healthy aging by integrating Martin Seligman's PERMA model of well-being and Ryff's six-dimensional model of psychological wellbeing. The purpose of this research is to…

Transcranial magnetic stimulation from healthy brain aging to Alzheimer's disease: a review on mechanisms, therapeutic potential, and future clinical directions.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a non-invasive and non-pharmacological intervention, is increasingly being explored for mitigating age-related cognitive decline and dementia. Its therapeutic potential is largely attributed to its capacity to modulate neuronal firing rates and induce neuroplastic changes and modulate neurovascular coupling within distributed neural networks that support memory, attention, and executive function. Despite growing interest, gaps remain in understanding how specific stimulation parameters engage in neural circuits and translate into meaningful cognitive ou

Verifying the Japanese version of the Healthy Aging Brain Care Monitor self-report tool for evaluating post-intensive care syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) requires the use of multiple assessment tools because it affects multiple domains: Cognitive, Functional, and Behavioural/Psychological. Therefore, this study translated the self-report (SR) version of the Healthy Aging Brain Care Monitor (HABC-M), spanning multiple domains, into Japanese and analysed its reliability and validity in a post-intensive care setting. METHODS: Patients aged 20 years or older and admitted to the adult intensive care unit from August 2019 to January 2021 were included and surveyed by questionnaire. The 21-item Dementia…

The modified Healthy Aging Index is associated with mobility limitations and falls in a community-based sample of oldest old.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Healthy Aging Index (HAI) is useful in capturing the health status of multiple organ systems in older adults. Previous studies have mainly focused on the association of HAI with mortality and disability. We constructed a modified HAI (mHAI) to examine its association with mobility limitations and falls in a community-based sampling of older Chinese adults. METHODS: We investigated 399 community-dwelling older adults aged 80 years or older, and constructed the mHAI with five non-invasive tests (systolic blood pressure, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment test, glucose co…
