The limited number of studies concerning the prevalence of hearing loss and vision impairment and their causes, and the lack of strategies to prevent or treat the deleterious effects of hearing loss and vision impairment, point to a significant gap in the knowledge base concerning aged minority populations. This cross-sectional study evaluated the relationship between vision and hearing impairment and psychological well-being among a sample of 988 elderly African American persons. Fair or poor vision or hearing was reported for 36.5% and 26% of our sample, respectively. Reported prevalence rat

Auditory neuropathy (AN) is a form of sensorineural deafness specifically affecting the conduction of the nerve impulse from the cochlear hair cells to the auditory centres of the brain. As such, the condition is a potential clinical target for 'cell replacement therapy', in which a functioning auditory nerve is regenerated by transplanting an appropriated neural progenitor. In this review, we survey the current literature and examine possible experimental models for this condition, with particular reference to their compatibility as suitable hosts for transplantation. The use of exogenous neu

Despite their particular functional consequences, radiotherapy-induced ear injuries remain under-evaluated and under-reported. These reactions may have acute or late character, may affect all structures of the hearing organ, and result in conductive, sensorineural or mixed hearing loss. Up to 40% of patients have acute middle ear side effects during radical irradiation including acoustic structures and about one-third of patients develop late sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Total radiotherapy dose and tumour site seem to be among the most important factors associated with the risk of hearin

The application of a polychotomous generalization of the linear probabilistic model of Cox is described, which allows the investigation of the effects of different noise levels with various durations of exposure on hearing. If the model assumptions are not rejected, it is possible to separate the effect of noise exposure from the effect of age. The results will thus show to what extent the hearing losses of an industrial worker are due to presbyacusis or to noise exposure. An empirical investigation was based on the evaluation of hearing losses at the audiometric frequencies 1, 2 and 3 kHz in

BACKGOUND: Hereditary hearing loss is one of the most common genetically heterogeneous defects in human. About 70% of hereditary hearing loss is defined as non-syndromic hearing loss showing loss of hearing ability without any other symptoms. Up to date, the identified genes associated with non-syndromic hearing loss are 128, including 52 genes for DFNA and 76 genes for DFNB. Because of high levels of heterogeneity, it is difficult to identify the causative factors for hearing loss using Sanger sequencing.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to detect causative factors and investigate pathogenic mutations

Hearing loss is a relatively common condition in children, occurring in approximately 2 out of every 1,000 births with approximately 50% of reported diagnoses having a primary genetic etiology. Given the prevalence and genetic component of hearing loss, coupled with a trend toward early diagnosis with the institution of universal newborn hearing screening, The Genetics of Hearing Loss Clinic was established at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to manage the diagnosis, testing, and genetic counseling for individuals and families. This paper described a cohort of 660 individuals with a dia

BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), also known as Lobstein disease, is a rare inherited connective tissue disorder characterized by bone fragility and various extra-skeletal manifestations. Hearing loss is a frequent but often underestimated complication that may significantly impair quality of life.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 34-year-old woman with clinically established osteogenesis imperfecta type I who developed progressive bilateral conductive hearing loss over a three-year period. Audiological evaluation revealed symmetrical conductive impairment with preserved spe

Nonhuman primates, compared with humans and rodents, have historically been far less used for studies of age-related hearing loss, primarily because of their long life span and high cost of maintenance. Strong similarities in genetics, anatomy, and neurophysiology of the auditory nervous system between humans and monkeys, however, could provide fruitful opportunities to enhance our understanding of hearing loss. The present study used a common, noninvasive technique for testing hearing sensitivity in humans, the auditory brainstem response (ABR), to assess the hearing of 48 rhesus macaques fro

Slight and hidden hearing loss in children have been linked to cognitive and social difficulties, and yet the neurobiological mechanisms behind these issues remain poorly understood. Most animal models focus on severe hearing loss, leaving the effects of hidden or slight hearing loss largely unexplored. To uncover the neural mechanisms connecting slight/hidden hearing loss to cognitive and social challenges, we induced hearing loss in young (4-week-old) Wistar rats through noise exposure. We then examined cognitive function (object recognition test) and social behavior (juvenile play behavior

INTRODUCTION: The active bone conduction hearing implant Bonebridge is a therapeutic option for hearing rehabilitation of patients with conductive and mixed hearing loss, as well as for those with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. It has demonstrated satisfactory audiological gain, comparable to conventional hearing aids and percutaneous bone-anchored hearing implants, with low rates of surgical and postoperative complications. However, long-term follow-up data are scarce.
METHODS: This retrospective, observational, and longitudinal study included 26 patients who underwent Bonebridge imp

The role of nitric oxide (NO) in the onset and pathogenesis of hearing loss remains a matter of debate. To address this, we conducted a narrative review of the literature on the subject. We performed a literature search of SCOPUS, PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Google Scholar databases on the production and role of NO in hearing loss using the search terms/strategy "nitric oxide" AND "hearing loss" to ensure a comprehensive review of available studies. Results: Of 186 papers initially retrieved, 166 were unrelated to hearing loss and NO and were excluded. Of the 23 papers ultimately rev

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the temporal association between smoking or alcohol consumption and hearing loss, and to confirm previously published cross-sectional associations.
DESIGN: The Blue Mountains Hearing Study is a population-based survey of age-related hearing loss conducted in a defined suburban area, west of Sydney. Hearing loss was measured in 2956 participants (aged 50+ yrs) and was defined as the pure-tone average of frequencies 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 kHz >25 dB HL in the better ear (bilateral hearing loss). Alcohol consumption and smoking status were measured using an in

Hearing helps us know where we are relative to important events and objects in our environment and it allows us to track our changing position dynamically over space and time. Auditory cues are used in combination with other sensory inputs (visual, vestibular, proprioceptive) to help us perceive our own movements through space, known as self-motion perception. Whether we are maintaining standing balance, walking, or driving, audition can provide unique and important information to help optimize self-motion perception, and consequently to support safe mobility. Recent epidemiological and experi

Hearing loss is the biggest risk factor for tinnitus, and hearing-loss-related pathological changes in the auditory pathway have been hypothesized as the mechanism underlying tinnitus. However, due to the comorbidity of tinnitus and hearing loss, it has been difficult to differentiate between neural correlates of tinnitus and consequences of hearing loss. In this study, we dissociated tinnitus and hearing loss in FVB mice, which exhibit robust resistance to tinnitus following monaural noise-induced hearing loss. Furthermore, knock-down of glutamate decarboxylase 65 (GAD65) expression in audito

Natural hearing which means hearing naturally like normal people is critical for patients with hearing loss to participate in life. Cochlear implants have enabled numerous severe hearing loss patients to hear voice functionally, while cochlear implant users can hardly distinguish different tones or appreciate music subject to the absence of rate coding and insufficient frequency channels. Here a bioinspired soft elastic metamaterial that reproduces the shape and key functions of the human cochlea is reported. Inspired by human cochlea, the metamaterials are designed to possess graded microstru
