Neurovascular hypoxia after mild traumatic brain injury in juvenile mice correlates with heart-brain dysfunctions in adulthood.

AIM: Retrospective studies suggest that mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in pediatric patients may lead to an increased risk of cardiac events. However, the exact functional and temporal dynamics and the associations between heart and brain pathophysiological trajectories are not understood. METHODS: A single impact to the left somatosensory cortical area of the intact skull was performed on juvenile mice (17 days postnatal). Cerebral 3D photoacoustic imaging was used to measure the oxygen saturation (sO2 ) in the impacted area 4 h after mTBI followed by 2D and 4D echocardiography at days 7

Acute kidney injury in patients with acute decompensated heart failure-cardiogenic shock: Prevalence, risk factors and outcome.

BACKGROUND: Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) represents a major complication of acute heart failure and cardiogenic shock (CS). There is a paucity of data on AKI complicating acutely decompensated heart failure patients presenting with CS (ADHF-CS). We aimed to investigate AKI prevalence, risk factors and outcomes in this subgroup of patients. METHODS: Retrospective observational study on patients admitted for ADHF-CS to our 12-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), between January 2010 and December 2019. Demographic, clinical, and biochemical variables were collected at baseline and during hospital stay.

Post-cardiac Injury Syndrome in a Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Patient After an Open-Heart Operation: A Case Report.

Post-cardiac injury syndrome (PCIS) is an inflammatory condition caused by a cardiac injury that can affect the pericardium, pleura, or both. We describe a female patient who underwent heart surgery and thereafter developed pericardium and pleural effusion. She was also known to have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Due to the possibility that each of these symptoms could impact the pericardium or pleura, we came to the conclusion that they could be caused by either PCIS, SLE, or both. A 54-year-old woman underwent open heart surgery three weeks ago and required aortic valve replacement and

Prevalence and factors associated with pressure injury in patients undergoing open heart surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Pressure injuries (PIs) are one of the major and costliest medical problems with severe implications for patients. Cardiovascular surgery patients are at the higher risk of developing surgery-related PIs. So this study was conducted with the aim of investigating the prevalence and factors associated with PIs in patients undergoing open heart surgery. We identified articles through electronic databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, ProQuest; and Persian Databases: SID, Magiran and Irandoc without restriction on language or publication period (from inception through June 2022). Fasudil Protects Against Adriamycin-induced Acute Heart Injury by Inhibiting Oxidative Stress, Apoptosis, and Cellular Senescence.

BACKGROUND: The clinical utility of Adriamycin (ADR) is limited due to its toxicity, particularly cardiotoxicity. Therefore, effective cardioprotective adjuvants to minimize ADR-induced acute cardiotoxicity are urgently needed. Our previous studies have demonstrated the protective roles of fasudil on tissue injury. Here, we further explore whether inhibition of Rho-kinase could alleviate the acute heart injury induced by ADR. METHODS: C57BL6 mice were randomly divided into the following four groups: ① ADR group; ② low-dose fasudil (ADR+L); ③ high-dose fasudil (ADR+H); and ④ control group (CON

Gum Arabic protects the rat heart from ischemia/reperfusion injury through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant pathways.

Gum Arabic (GA) is a plant exudate with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. GA has shown promise in protection from and treatment of kidney failure, however, its role in the protection of the heart from ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) has not been investigated. This study investigated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of Gum Arabic (GA) in the protection of the heart against ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Langendorff-perfused Wistar rat hearts were divided into seven groups. One group which was subjected to I/R with no other treatment served as the control group. The seco

Impact of the Main Cardiovascular Risk Factors on Plasma Extracellular Vesicles and Their Influence on the Heart's Vulnerability to Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury.

The majority of cardiovascular deaths are associated with acute coronary syndrome, especially ST-elevation myocardial infarction. Therapeutic reperfusion alone can contribute up to 40 percent of total infarct size following coronary artery occlusion, which is called ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). Its size depends on many factors, including the main risk factors of cardiovascular mortality, such as age, sex, systolic blood pressure, smoking, and total cholesterol level as well as obesity, diabetes, and physical effort. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membrane-coated particles released by e

Ischemic preconditioning protects the heart against ischemia-reperfusion injury in chronic kidney disease in both males and females.

BACKGROUND: Uremic cardiomyopathy is a common cardiovascular complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD) characterized by left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and fibrosis enhancing the susceptibility of the heart to acute myocardial infarction. In the early stages of CKD, approximately 60% of patients are women. We aimed to investigate the influence of sex on the severity of uremic cardiomyopathy and the infarct size-limiting effect of ischemic preconditioning (IPRE) in experimental CKD. METHODS: CKD was induced by 5/6 nephrectomy in 9-week-old male and female Wistar rats. Two months later, s

CircHelz activates NLRP3 inflammasome to promote myocardial injury by sponging miR-133a-3p in mouse ischemic heart.

Myocardial infarction (MI)-induced the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome has been well known to aggravate myocardial injury and cardiac dysfunction by causing inflammation and pyroptosis in the heart. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been demonstrated to play critical roles in cardiovascular diseases. However, the functions and mechanisms of circRNAs in modulating cardiac inflammatory response and cardiomyocyte pyroptosis remain largely unknown. We revealed that circHelz, a novel circRNA transcribed from the helicase with zinc finger (Helz) gene, was significantly upregulated in both the ischemic

Therapeutic Inhibition of Acid-Sensing Ion Channel 1a Recovers Heart Function After Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury.

BACKGROUND: Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is one of the major risk factors implicated in morbidity and mortality associated with cardiovascular disease. During cardiac ischemia, the buildup of acidic metabolites results in decreased intracellular and extracellular pH, which can reach as low as 6.0 to 6.5. The resulting tissue acidosis exacerbates ischemic injury and significantly affects cardiac function. METHODS: We used genetic and pharmacologic methods to investigate the role of acid-sensing ion channel 1a (ASIC1a) in cardiac IRI at the cellular and whole-organ level. Human induced plu

Correlation Between Heart Rate Characteristic Index Score and Severity of Brain Injury in Neonates With Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) remains devastating for neonates despite widespread treatment with therapeutic hypothermia (TH). The heart rate characteristic (HRC) index score, a measure of heart rate variability, could prove useful in the management of neonates with HIE as new therapies emerge or when withdrawal-of-support decisions are being considered. PURPOSE: The main purpose was to describe correlation between HRC index scores and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) severity of injury for neonates with HIE. METHODS/ANALYSIS: Low/high HRC index scores retrieved at

Identifying the key regulators that promote cell-cycle activity in the hearts of early neonatal pigs after myocardial injury.

Mammalian cardiomyocytes exit the cell cycle shortly after birth. As a result, an occurrence of coronary occlusion-induced myocardial infarction often results in heart failure, postinfarction LV dilatation, or death, and represents one of the most significant public health morbidities worldwide. Interestingly however, the hearts of neonatal pigs have been shown to regenerate following an acute myocardial infarction (MI) occuring on postnatal day 1 (P1); a recovery period which is accompanied by an increased expression of markers for cell-cycle activity, and suggests that early postnatal myocar

Hyperuricemia complicated with acute kidney injury is associated with adverse outcomes in patients with severely decompensated acute heart failure.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between the serum level of uric acid (UA) and the acute kidney injury on admission in patients with acute heart failure (AHF) remain unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 1326 AHF patients were screened, and data for 1047 patients who were admitted to the intensive-care unit were analyzed. The patients were assigned to a low-UA group (UA ≤ 7.0 mg/dl, n = 569) or a high-UA group (UA > 7.0 mg/dl, n = 478) according to their UA level at admission. Acute kidney injury (AKI) at admission was defined based on the ratio of the serum creatinine value recorded on admiss

Cognitive Correlates of MRI-defined Cerebral Vascular Injury and Atrophy in Elderly American Indians: The Strong Heart Study.

OBJECTIVE: American Indians experience substantial health disparities relative to the US population, including vascular brain aging. Poorer cognitive test performance has been associated with cranial magnetic resonance imaging findings in aging community populations, but no study has investigated these associations in elderly American Indians. METHODS: We examined 786 American Indians aged 64 years and older from the Cerebrovascular Disease and its Consequences in American Indians study (2010-2013). Cranial magnetic resonance images were scored for cortical and subcortical infarcts, hemorrhag

High fat diet reduces the expression of miRNA-29b in heart and increases susceptibility of myocardium to ischemia/reperfusion injury.

Several studies have shown the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in myocardial dysfunction in response to ischemia/reperfusion (I/R). In this study, we investigated the impact of high fat (HF) diet in the myocardial susceptibility to I/R injury, as well as in the expression of miRNA-29b. Isolated heart experiments using the ex vivo Langendorff perfusion model were used to induce cardiac I/R injury. HF diet-induced cardiac hypertrophy and impaired cardiac functional recovery after I/R. miRNA-29b, which targets Col1, was reduced in the heart of HF diet-fed mice, whereas the cardiac expression of Col1 w

Protection against reperfusion injury by 3',4'-dihydroxyflavonol in rat isolated hearts involves inhibition of phospholamban and JNK2.

BACKGROUND: Flavonols, including 3',4'-dihydroxyflavonol (DiOHF), reduce myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injury but their mechanism remains uncertain. To better understand the mechanism of the cardioprotective actions of flavonols we investigated the effect of DiOHF on cardiac function and the activation of protective and injurious signalling kinases after I/R in rat isolated hearts. METHODS: We assessed the effect of global ischemia (20min) and reperfusion (5-30min) on cardiac function and injury in rat isolated, perfused hearts in the absence or presence of DiOHF (10μM) during rep
